00:00You see it. It absolutely was. Also cool to watch the privateers that are getting better
00:04every week. Your fmf privateer power award goes to Grant Harlan this week. Now, Harlan
00:10started last year so strong in supercross. Told me by the time he got to the smx playoffs,
00:14he was smoked. This year he was injured at the beginning of supercross. He feels like
00:18he's building his strength and fitness and getting better every week. He's been in some
00:23knockdown dragout battles actually with his teammate, which is Marshall Welton. He said,
00:28you watch us. Last lap. Somewhere around top ten. We'll be battling every time. It's happened
00:33almost every single moto this year. We're ready for the first 450 moto. Time for the
00:37ktm keys to the moto. If they're going to be battling, they're going to be doing this
00:41number. There's no stop and go. That's what I was talking about with those lines of both
00:45brothers, jet Lawrence and hunter Lawrence. Keeping that momentum going. If you can't
00:50get to the inside, continue on to the outside and vice versa. The reason we bring it up
00:54because this track, you got to put it together. You're on that dance floor, man. Be silky
00:58smooth with it. Don't fight it. Let it happen. You mentioned a lot, you said the stop and
01:03go. If you lose that momentum, it takes forever to get it back.
01:06It takes forever to get it back. Not only are you racing a racetrack, you got to save
01:09your body and the motorcycle as well. We've seen a couple of dns from here. That's why
01:14we're harping on it. All these guys know it. Not only getting the body, you got to make
01:18sure the bike makes it to the end as well. Everybody has a game plan. I guess in the
01:23case of southwick, until you get punched in the mouth with sand. Everybody has a plan.
01:27Let's see if they can stick to it and execute a lot of the line. I've said it several times.
01:32Only eight points between the top three in this championship. Sixth and number four,
01:36the monster fast qualifier. Let's go racing. Hunter and jet with the good starts. They've
01:50been incredible in motocross on those hondas. Hunter right behind him and sexton there as
01:56well. Nice move from chase. He was on the outside of those guys. He was able to square
02:01up on the inside. Jet lawrence is where he wanted to be at out front.
02:07Blessinger I believe is fourth. The two ktm teammates third and fourth. We're going. Bill
02:13Nicoletti. Aaron lost the rear end. Nicoletti was able to get up the inside.
02:19Welcome back to the 26 of the 36. I think that's march banks. We're going to find out
02:24in a moment. I think that's phil. Phil wants some action. Jason anderson was able to get
02:31around aaron as well. Aaron slid out and he lost two positions right there. Tough break
02:37for him. He was right behind his teammate chase sexton. Look at that lead already from
02:40jet lawrence. Looks a lot like degan in the first moto. As for nicoletti, this is what
02:46he's been doing all year. Great starts, great opening laps. He's running fourth right now
02:51on the muck off. Jet lawrence already starting to get away.
02:57We saw jet lawrence pull off earlier in practice. We were thinking maybe it was his shoulder
03:01or just saving the energy. Whatever it is, it's working. I think what you're going to
03:05see, just what hayden degan, this is that section we were talking about, he's going
03:09to get out front and try to manage this race and make it really smooth. If he has a shoulder
03:14injury, this is exactly where you want to be and not be battling with chase sexton or
03:18his brother. Look over his shoulder and he already sees
03:21an alarmingly large lead for half a lap into a moto.
03:25He looked back and he had to look back even more because he wasn't there. Made a mistake.
03:30Perfect lap by him if he could keep this up. About to be one lap in the books here. Lawrence
03:39again, sexton third. I think anderson has managed to fight his way back through. See
03:44if he's in fourth. That's a heck of a gap for one lap.
03:50Yeah, I think, again, you get out front and you don't know the pace. Hunter lawrence knows
03:56my brother is going at this pace. Jet lawrence, just like hayden degan, I think these guys
03:59get out front and they realize, oh, these guys are just letting the race come to them.
04:06I'm just going as fast as I can or whatever and I'm just getting this gap. Both motos,
04:11they've had about three seconds on both of them between hayden degan and jet lawrence.
04:14The first laps look exactly the same. Let's see if hunter lawrence can close in.
04:21Hunter on the 96 had sexton right next to him off the start able to hold it in that
04:27big hill turn and now starting to stretch it a little bit on sexton. Anderson has fought
04:31his way back around nickelodeon. Plessiger lost those two spots. He will be sixth. Cooper,
04:41barsha, macklewrath and kulas round out the top ten.
04:46Nice line by chase up the inside. Now, just what we saw in the 250 class, chase hopefully
04:52doesn't let jet lawrence get too far away from him. We saw it in the 250 class. Tom
04:58had to pace. He was too far behind. Let's see if he can do that, ac.
05:03J.T., what are you thinking on the number one?
05:06I was so interested to see how jet would respond. We had a weekend off. We know he's been healing.
05:11The shoulder has been feeling a little bit better. This is really the first time since
05:15that crash that he has attacked on the first lap. Remember that crash happened on the first
05:20lap at hangtown where he was really trying to push. He was so full of confidence then.
05:25Ever since then, it's been a very strategic approach to these races. Just manage the race.
05:31Don't get out in front of your skis. It looks like he's back to form. If you've ever looked
05:35to see what confidence looks like, this is it. Attacking the first lap, putting in your
05:39best laps early and trying to build that gap again.
05:41Thanks, J.T. Adam, what are you seeing?
05:46I think if you look at jet lawrence's resume, what he's done at his age is pretty incredible.
05:52He's won every championship there is to win. With this talk about him and his health and
05:58not sure if he's so strong, not sure if he can win, this and that, sometimes that's exactly
06:03what you need to stay in it and stay motivated and come out here with something to prove.
06:08That's fun for guys like him, great athletes like jet. So I think that's a little bit of
06:13what we're seeing. I think he's relishing the moment. He's relishing the doubt, per
06:18se.
06:19Had to dig himself out of a hole, no doubt about that, adam, after the big crash at round
06:23two hang town. After that first lap, now hunter lawrence matching his brother.
06:29Yeah, I think hunter has settled in and now he's getting to tow a jet. Really as he was
06:35going so fast, he was able to get away from those guys. Now you start slowing down and
06:40maybe it's allowing hunter to catch him up. Overall, he's towing his brother and they're
06:44pulling away from chase x.
06:46Now bottom box is march banks who is in his first pro moto cross race of the year coming
06:51back from two different thumb injuries. He's caught kulos, the estonian that we mentioned
06:57before this moto. Looks like march banks in the black jersey trying to get a piece of
07:01the top ten.
07:02Yeah, I think that's my brother right behind him. They're trying to go up the inside working
07:08on it.
07:09Oh, yeah, march banks is already ahead of them. That is actually malcolm stewart in
07:13the black jersey. March banks is now just ahead.
07:17So kulos back to 11th. March banks 10th. And there's malcolm.
07:23Malcolm funneled back to the inside. He's going to go to the outside. That line pushes
07:26away and he's going to lose all that time. Now you've got to work it going. Just like
07:31the 250 class, there's battle for days back here. This is where you don't want to be at
07:35because you're getting your face full of ruse. Let's see if he goes up the inside of these
07:41guys.
07:42Kulos knew it was coming.
07:43He knew it was coming.
07:44He went right. He went right to the left. Now malcolm is going to try the outside, james.
07:51Yeah, he's going to try the outside but then it's going to funnel back in. Now he has an
07:55option. Harry is going to have to go either inside or outside. Malcolm might go to slingshot.
08:00As we broke down earlier, you've got to be standing up to get there.
08:04Harry did the right thing. Let's see if he goes down there. No. Great job. Great riding,
08:10too. He's not doing anything wrong. He's just going where malcolm wants to be at. Malcolm
08:14can't really do anything about it. It's another passing opportunity. Malcolm is going to have
08:18to be a lot closer than he is right now to get to him.
08:21Cullen parks in the phoenix honda behind malcolm. They're going back after march banks. That's
08:28mackle rath. Mackle rath going backwards here. March banks has gotten around him. I thought
08:33they were getting back around march banks. No. March banks went around mackle rath on
08:36that yellow twisted tee. Kulas goes by him as well. Here comes malcolm.
08:41Malcolm going to get around. You're going to see big j out on the track in a minute.
08:46Don't get dad fired up. He's going to go up the inside of him. Looks like shane, something's
08:53going on, struggling a little bit, kind of standing up, laboring. You can tell the guy's
08:57not feeling pretty good to go really far down the inside here. Malcolm's got around. Let's
09:02see if he can close down on harry again.
09:04Now the next honda rider in order is oslund, the rider from sweden. He's actually pitting
09:09alongside the factory honda team. He's got a special connection. Lars lindstrom, as oslund
09:14looks to make the move here. Lars lindstrom, the team manager. His dad, gunnar, a swedish
09:19legend. He was the team honda manager back in the day. He's got some connections. Swedish
09:24family. They brought oslund over, gave him some support. He's running well right now.
09:29Up to 12th. J.T.?
09:32Just looking at the international variety of this moto right now. Seven riders inside
09:37the top 20 are from a country not named america. So it just speaks to the wide range of riders
09:43we have. This is truly turning into an international championship.
09:46Yeah, 100%. When you come to this race and you start looking back, you're like, who is
09:51that number? This guy's coming up on me. Malcolm's about to figure that out right now. Looks
09:56like he's got a pretty good pace. Now malcolm's got to regroup and try to go after harry again.
10:01I guess he's going to have a honda on the rear end of him, a.C.
10:06James, I don't know about you, but some of the scariest moments in my career were somebody
10:11passing me, me looking at their jersey and having no idea who they are.
10:16Did that happen to you ever? Yeah, it happened to me. I got my stories, but I'm going to
10:22keep them my stories. So alvin oslund, there he is on the 290. There's probably a lot of
10:28fans saying, who is that guy? He's going pretty good. He's, I believe, going to race
10:32here in red bud. There he is. And again, got the connections over there with the Lindstrom
10:38family. And up ahead of them would be march banks. Shout out to him. Had a thumb injury
10:44in supercross. Then had a crash on press day at the pro moto cross opener. Had a huge gash
10:50right on the inside of his thumb. Probably the worst place you get cut to hold on to
10:54the handlebars. So then he had to miss the first four rounds. He's finally back now.
10:59And running ninth behind Barsha, who's also ailing a bit with a pair of knee injuries.
11:04Both knees hurting for Barsha. Running eighth. These guys are so patient on the throttles.
11:10They try to get on the inside of these corners. And again, let the bike just drift out to
11:15that. Those corners, those berms. Alvin's going down the inside right here. That makes
11:22it tough once you go in that angle going into that corner. You've got so much speed.
11:27You can't tell on TV, but it's downhill. Next thing you know, you hit a 90. That bike wants
11:31to tuck underneath you. It's a fast place. Here comes Nicoletti.
11:39Justin Cooper has made the move on Nicoletti here. Cooper, who is, I believe, fastest in
11:45the second session today qualifying. And third overall making the move. And now Plessinger
11:51after that early mistake looking to get Nicoletti back, and he does.
11:54Nice move by Aaron. I don't know if it's frustration. He's going to be really frustrated right now
11:59off the track. I wonder, did he go down or something? He got past, but you can see Justin
12:06Cooper got around him. And then one mistake. Now he's gotten past by Barsha. And it looks
12:10like now Garrett Marchbanks, if he don't mess around, he'll get past as well.
12:15Yeah, well, ups and downs of this moto from Plessinger. There is Marchbanks. What has
12:21happened? Plessinger losing two spots to both club mx riders and to Barsha. That's three
12:26positions in about a quarter of a lap. Yeah, well, you saw him run off the racetrack,
12:33and that stop and go, as I'm talking about, it's not like they don't have the powers,
12:37but yeah, he's pointing at vision right now. He doesn't have any vision.
12:41J.T.? Yeah, exactly what you just said. He's pointing at his goggles. A lot of times what
12:45can happen in there, if you start sweating, water can get on the inside of your lens or
12:49possibly he's out of roll-offs or a tear-off. I would assume he'll be pulling into the mechanics
12:54area. That message he sent was to prepare them, get the goggles ready, because he's
12:58going to pull in here, try to grab goggles as quickly as possible and get back out there.
13:02He's still got them on. Yeah, he's still got them on. So as J.T. said, maybe it's sweat
13:10on the inside or maybe sometimes the roll-offs, if he has roll-offs on, they get stuck because
13:15of the sand or he's out of tear-offs. Either way, you can see him not going forward. So
13:19for him, the best thing to do would be pulling in, get some goggles and then try to go out
13:23with 18 minutes left of his race. And on the right, J.Duncey is mechanic with
13:28the goggles. We'll see how quickly they can do the swap. He's going to lose a ton of spots.
13:32He's coming in. I was going to say, Aaron may be the only one
13:52out here that has any experience with this because he used to race dry national cross
13:55country where you always do a goggle swap. But it's probably been about ten years since
14:00even he's done that. Yeah, the way he was riding, it looked like
14:04there was something on the inside of his goggles. Normally these guys just wipe it with their
14:09hands to get some kind of vision. It looked like he was riding like he couldn't see. So
14:14clearly there was more going on, whether it was sweat or dirt. He had to come in.
14:19And all the way back to 17th place. He was battling Nicoletti for sixth at the beginning
14:25of that lap. Looking at the lead, chase Sexton was able
14:30to close that gap down on hunter. It was actually both of those guys who were six seconds behind
14:35Jett Lawrence. Looks like now chase is starting to get that form. He was the second fastest
14:40out of the top three. Hunter was third. Jett was still a little bit quicker in both of
14:44them. Now you've got to wonder, is chase Sexton, if he has any kind of pace, if he can get
14:49around hunter Lawrence, maybe he can close. Now as you say that, hunter Lawrence must
14:53have made a mistake. Chase must have made a mistake and he lost that 2 again.
14:57There's hunter in the blue jersey. Second. Jett is the only rider with a 2.12 lap. Everyone
15:04else 2.13 or beyond. That was earlier in the moto. Now Jett just ran a 2.13. Everybody
15:10else into the 2.14. Sexton trying to get back in there.
15:15This is where chase has got to be better at earlier part of the races. We saw Tom Bial
15:20in the same situation. Whatever it is on this trace, now he's starting to jump a little
15:24bit farther. Whatever it is, you get that gap. It's really hard to close down. I think
15:29a lot of that comes through is one, just how hard the conditions are. You see these guys
15:34slipping and sliding. You're just taking a big chance. Jett did a phenomenal job getting
15:38that gap. Now he's riding his own race. Those guys have to do everything to attack him again.
15:45you. I did not realize how much of the strategy within the strategy we see in these races.
15:51We'll talk more about that in a moment. We want to show you first how Lawrence put himself
15:55in that position. We'll start it with the motorsport.com whole shot replay.
15:59Every race so far except for one this year, it's been the Hondas out front. They don't
16:03figure it out. I guarantee you when they line up on the gate, they feel like they're going
16:07to pull the whole shot. That confidence is showing. Again, Jett Lawrence, hunter Lawrence,
16:11they're both out front. Chase Exxon was right there, but it was the big number one and 96
16:16right behind him. Now let's go into the management of it. You talked a lot about you get out
16:22front, you dictate, you can set your own pace and all those parts and pieces.
16:27The way Jett Lawrence rides a motorcycle, he's really patient. I feel like one of the
16:31strongest suits for him and what he does as he makes a little mistake over jumping at,
16:36he gets out front. When he's out front, everybody has to dictate what he's doing. It allows
16:41Jett to be able to be very patient as we saw Hayden Deegan jump really far in some of these
16:46sections, be patient, slow down. The way he rides the motorcycle, he stands up quite a
16:51bit. When he's out front, it's like a basketball team shooting threes or offensive football
16:57team. You can't outscore them. What you got to do if you're Chase Exxon, you got to be
17:01in front of Jett Lawrence. You got to make him have to ride faster and do what you do.
17:07I feel like it's, again, using that same terminology of a football team, it's almost
17:11making an offensive football team play defense, run the ball. I think that's the only way
17:16you can do it. When you're watching Jett Lawrence out front, if he's out front, his riding style,
17:22he's going to be hard to beat. I feel like the only way those guys are going to beat
17:25him is make him have to push, make him not be patient. What he does very well is why
17:31he's pulling away from you. I think for him, it's going to be up to the rest of those guys,
17:35JT, to stop it.
17:36I couldn't agree more. You watch him riding right now. Yes, he's leading the race. He
17:40has a six-second lead. He's turning some of the fastest laps on the racetrack. I would
17:44estimate he's riding at about 80% right now. Maybe it's a little higher than that. Maybe
17:48he's making it look very easy. You see how easy he's entering the corners. There's no
17:53real urgency in his riding. He's not taking any risks whatsoever. To your point, the only
17:58way to beat him is to get him out of that comfort zone. You've got to put him on a pace
18:02that he's not comfortable with. Just like at high points, sexting past him, look to
18:06be pulling away before he made that mistake. Right here, Jett Lawrence can do a thousand
18:11laps at this pace, no problem. To beat him, you've got to get him out of this zone.
18:15I agree. Just to expand a little bit more on that, it's not like he's feeling like he's
18:20like, all right, he's not trying. He's trying, but what makes him good is being out front
18:26and being able to slow down to hop over the berms and hop over these bumps. If you're having
18:31to catch somebody, you're not doing that. You're pushing and blowing through that stuff.
18:34I think, again, they've got to be in front of him to start. If we're watching the battle
18:39for 11th, you've got to make him be back there to have a chance to beat him. I think that's
18:44what makes Jett Lawrence so good. He's never back there. He's putting himself up front.
18:49He's dictating. It's going to be hard for anybody to beat him up front.
18:53Dylan Ferrandez starting to work forward on the Phoenix Honda. It's caught Malcolm Stewart
18:57now. That is 11th and 12th. Ferrandez saying yesterday at press day, it's the first time
19:01this team, Phoenix Honda, has really raced with this level of effort. A rider of Ferrandez's
19:06caliber, 450 champion two years ago and racing the full pro motocross campaign. They've had
19:11some engine issues, been down on power. Hoping they've made some strides. That was the hope
19:16after the weekend off. Yeah, I mean, I know Dylan's out there trying
19:21the same thing with the team. You've got to start to wonder with Dylan, is it becoming
19:27mental on his side? He is a champion. He wants to be out there battling. I said a few weeks
19:32ago, if you're not up there competing to win or have a shot, it's hard once you've won
19:37these things to be out here battling for 10th place. I know the team, they're obviously
19:41learning and Dylan is phenomenal on the motorcycle and they're trying. I'm sure a little bit
19:46of this is probably the mental side of things, too, not being able to compete and just seems
19:51like everything else just a little bit worse when you're in that zone as well.
19:54Yeah, southwick historically has been one of Ferrandez's best tracks. Went 1.3 to win
19:59the overall in the 450 class in 2021. Now just trying to break the top ten.
20:05Yeah, when we're talking about the fluctuation in time, that one mistake, look how far Malcolm
20:11is ahead of Dylan. He made one mistake in the corner. When we're looking at the lap
20:15times and guys are right there and they go two seconds back, you just saw it play out
20:20right in front of you. That's why the times fluctuate so much.
20:23Give you a monster energy racer update. We mentioned Ferrandez. He's in 12th. Justin
20:28Cooper fifth and Jason Anderson fourth. Anderson was running the sand track at club MX. He's
20:35been stationed there for a while to get some testing in. I saw the whole Kawasaki team
20:41there the week after high point. Everybody, ECU and mapping, crew chief, Theo, suspension
20:49guys were there, mechanics, testing the Kawasaki in the sand and in the east coast terrain.
20:54Got Anderson up to fourth right now as Ferrandez goes back to work.
20:57Yeah, and a lot of reasons the teams do that is because, again, they try to make sure when
21:02they get here, I remember always having to change different cylinder heads and the engine
21:07package because the bike will run a lot hotter here. So while the whole team is going down
21:11in their rotten sand tracks, they're doing that to make sure the bike can last and at
21:16the same time they'll work on the suspension. But it really comes down to just the team
21:20itself making sure they got the right parts. A lot of these teams have built certain bikes,
21:24I mean certain parts for this racetrack here and they like to test it before they get out
21:28here. J.T. Mentioned earlier the international battle.
21:32Here we have it. The Swedish rider, Ostlund, has caught the rider from Estonia, Kulas.
21:37This is for ninth and tenth. That's no joke. And Ostlund around the outside of the red
21:43jersey going to try to make the pass. Yeah, he looked like he had some pace when
21:46he was behind my brother. And shout out to Nicoletti. He's out there battling and doing
21:51his thing. I'm thinking that Ostlund is going to get around here in a little bit. He's starting
21:56to move forward. I like this line right here because it gives him the option. They're going
22:02to funnel back in here. Is that 79? That's Kulas right in front of him. And then Ostlund
22:09right behind. Got you. Buried it in. Now he's going to be in the option to build a pass
22:15right here. We've seen most of these guys funnel in and now either go inside or outside.
22:21Let's see if he can let off the brakes to beat him today inside. Nope. Kulas said not
22:26today, son, not today. Now you've seen him bring Malcolm back into this battle.
22:30And Ferrandez as well. It could be a four or even five rider battle because Nicoletti
22:34not too far ahead in seventh. I just love to hear them digging in in the
22:45sand here. Bikes are just laboring so hard. Yeah, they're laboring.
22:59Kulas doing a good job fending him off. He's doing a great job. There's only certain parts
23:04of this racetrack that you know a guy can pass you. He just beat the two parts. Now
23:08he can slow down, let him catch him, throw a little bit of roost in his face. It's hard
23:14to breathe when you've got a face full of roost. It's part of the game. You can see
23:18his number plate. You can still read it. The guy behind him, you can't read his.
23:22I'll go back to that. That's what I've learned from you the last few years being on the show
23:25is how many tricks you guys have of I know when I need to go fast and I know when I don't.
23:30Because he can't pass me here. I'll rush when I need to.
23:34If you ever wonder, just for everybody at home, if you watch these guys, you'll see
23:37somebody catch him and all of a sudden there are certain parts where they're following
23:41each other. They'll be really close. When there's an opportunity to pass, you'll see
23:45the guy in front. They'll start charging. Right here, he goes down. That's exactly what
23:49you wanted to do. You knew you couldn't pass him. Throw the roost, get him frustrated.
23:54Now you see the bike smoking. Earlier, where you can pass, you go a little bit faster at
23:59him, block his line in there. Yeah, because it looked like Austin was going
24:03to get him a lap ago. It looked almost inevitable that that pass was going to come. Kulas fights
24:07him off for a lap and a half. Now he doesn't have to deal with him for the rest of the
24:11motorway. You know as a rider, you know what parts
24:16of the racetrack, look, if somebody is battling me and I don't want them to go around, I got
24:20to go fast in these two or three sections. Everywhere else, I'm going to slow down. I'm
24:24going to get my energy just to get back to that section to go fast again to hold them
24:29off. It's a game within the game. And then if you're the rider behind, like
24:34Austin was, you know he's playing that game, right?
24:37You know he's playing it. Eventually that's why you see guys get knocked down.
24:40They get frustrated. As we go back to Jett Lawrence, and he might
24:48be the master of playing it that way, but also how does the mind not wander when you're
24:52in a situation like this? You stay completely 100% focused.
24:56Well, I think with Jett, there's just so many, you know, again, the way he rides a motorcycle,
25:01I think it's easier for him to stay focused because he's picking this track. It's not
25:05like you're just riding around the whole track. He's picking certain spots. He's jumping.
25:11He knows his bumps that he wants to hit. He knows a lot of things. So I think for him,
25:15it's keeping his mind preoccupied because he's breaking this track down piece by piece.
25:20And if not, he'll have an incident like that, J.T.
25:22Yeah, and I think people often wonder why the mechanics give them lap times each and
25:27every time they come by on the pit board. It's exactly for that reason to keep them
25:30focused. Just think about the lap time, and if they start to drop off a lap time, they
25:34know they're losing focus. So it gives them something to focus on, keep lowering that
25:38lap time so they don't start daydreaming, so they don't lose that laser focus that they
25:43need. I think it's inevitable that your mind wanders
25:48out there. It happens from time to time. It's really about how quick you can bring your
25:54attention back to the moment. Those are the guys like Jett that don't make mistakes, that
26:00know when to refocus. We're all human, right? We all can daydream, the mind can wander.
26:05Especially watching Jett ride, it's beautiful. It looks easy. So I'm sure his mind goes here
26:10and there sometimes, but it's just about how quick you can bring the attention back.
26:16Just to talk about that, I think the way Jett rides a motorcycle, we think that it's a lot
26:21easier than what it is. I mean, he's trying, and if you're trying and something's hard,
26:26you're focused in on it. As well, every few corners, Jett's looking back and seeing what
26:32Hunter Lawrence is. It's not like he has a six-second lead and he's like, oh, I don't
26:36have no idea. He's looking back. So the fact that he does that is keeping his mind focused
26:41in and driving forward. Hunter's still right there. He wants to keep it going.
26:46Yeah, could be another Lawrence 1-2. That would be the fourth moto this year where it was some
26:50combination of them. Want to mention that all 31 rounds of the supermoto cross world championship,
26:56you can listen live on the Sirius XM NBC sports audio channel 85. You can listen to this very
27:03broadcast as it happens every Saturday in all 31 rounds of the SMX world championship. Jett Lawrence,
27:106.9-second gap. It looks like Sexton's challenge to Hunter has expired. He's all alone in third.
27:20Yeah, you can see Jett getting caught up with these lap riders. That's why I said for him,
27:25he's keeping an eye up on his brother. We saw you can lose two seconds in one corner out here if you
27:30get caught behind those lappers. Now it's like he's got around those. Hunter has to get around
27:35him as well. He's got a clean track in front of him. Jett to me looks 100%. He actually looks
27:41really comfortable, more comfortable this weekend as far as his shoulder than he did last weekend,
27:46a couple weekends ago. It's like he's healing. Right now, he's definitely just managing that
27:50lead. All right, this is my brother going after Harry again. Oh, he's going after him indeed.
27:59It's going to work. Yeah, big James must have stepped on that track out there.
28:03He said he don't want to go back down to I-4 with him, but nice move by Malcolm.
28:08Keep working on him. Eventually, you can hopefully get him, but Harry's been riding really good.
28:13Oh, Malcolm, a mistake. Is he going to give it back? He does. Oh, this is fantastic. Yeah,
28:20this is good. And Harry thought, I think he thought he was like, all right, Malcolm's done,
28:24and Malcolm slides out. He's like, all right, no, I don't want that. I don't want that. That's
28:27good move by Malcolm. Stay into it, AC. What you guys saw with Malcolm in that left-hand turn,
28:34how he was, he got down to that hard base and started loosing the front end. One thing at
28:38Southwick that's really important to do is to not try to make so much of your turn on the base of
28:45the track. So what that means is going into a turn, you want to be looking up and you want to
28:50be finding some part of the berm where you can make most of your turn so you can be up on the
28:57top of the nobbies and be going as straight as possible when you are on that hard base. And
29:02Malcolm just got a little caught out there. Oh, there's big James. There you go. There's
29:07your dad. I knew there was going to be a sighting of big foot out there. There he goes. There he
29:12goes. Yeah. Is that a nod of frustration or happiness? No, he's happy. Okay, he made the
29:17move. We're good. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, no, he's still happy. I mean, Malcolm's still fighting
29:22going. So, yeah, big J. J. T. So, James, when you would get out front, I used to watch this
29:28all the time. We would go back and watch tape and try to understand what was happening. Your
29:31dad would give you signs almost like we thought you wanted to steal home. Like, we couldn't
29:36understand. They're like baseball signs. He would like rub down his forearm when he got out front.
29:39One time he was flapping his arms like a bird. We could not figure out what these were. And now
29:44here's my chance. I'm going to ask you, what was he telling you to do? Because you were just
29:47annihilating all of us. It didn't look like you needed any help at all.
29:51Well, if you saw that big chicken out there flapping his arms, he was telling me to keep
29:57loose. Keep loose. Okay. If he was rubbing his arms down the side, he was telling me to stay
30:02smooth. So, my dad had a huge part. Just like my mechanic, I used to look at my dad every lap going
30:09by because he would tell me, okay, hey, be smooth. We had our own little tricks. But, yeah, that's
30:14what I was saying. Big James, he was going to pop out on that racetrack if Malcolm wasn't moving
30:18forward. I saw that head shake. He's good. We had our baseball signs. You caught on to it.
30:25We waited 22 years. That was 2002 when he first jumped into the pro ring. We waited 22 years to
30:31get to answers to those questions. Yeah. He did it every race of my career. Only time I didn't
30:36see him, I knew I was riding bad. He was walking back to the truck. If there were no signs to be
30:41held, I was in trouble. Malcolm now into the top ten. Oh, hold on to it, buddy.
30:57Supermoto cross playoffs return September 7th. Get your tickets to history. Go to
31:01supermotocross.com now. Supermoto cross, our three playoff rounds taking place in North Carolina,
31:10Texas, and Las Vegas, Nevada. Oh, Harry Kulas is staying close.
31:17Harry's not done with him. Malcolm better recognize that.
31:21There's big James right there. Just outside of that berm. He recognizes that.
31:25Yeah, let's see what sign comes up. He's going to tell him that Harry's coming.
31:30This is good. That is 11th. Krestinov, the other Estonian. Kulas, buddy, he is in 12th.
31:37Ostlund, the Swedish rider who fell, 13th. Plessinger has climbed back up to 14th after
31:43the goggle swap. Let's update you on the points. If it ends like this, jet will take second of
31:49the points away from chase Sexton. Hunter Lawrence will continue to hold the point lead. There he is
31:54with the blue jersey. Hunter is doing exactly what he needs to do right now. Maybe his brother,
32:00he knew his brother was going to be really strong at this track. I think
32:03jet grew up riding in the sand. If you had to pick, I would lean towards jet.
32:08Obviously, he's getting healthy. I think hunter has been very smart all year. When he's not
32:12feeling it, he stays on the podium. For him, maybe make a couple of bike changes. He's right there.
32:18I don't think jet minds going down and knock down for the championship, going down to the
32:23wire with his brother as long as chase Sexton is behind both of those guys. Hunter doing exactly
32:28what he needs to do. He's got another moto. Maybe he can go one step above.
32:33Let's talk about the different riding styles with hunter and jet. My theory is they both
32:38moved to Europe at the same time. Hunter is almost five years older. It was earlier in the riding
32:43development than jet. Then they started riding all those gnarly, bottomless, famous sand tracks
32:48in Europe. That's exactly what you see. When I say hunter, he sits down a little bit more
32:53than jet. It works on hard pack tracks. It works a lot of places. It works here at southwick. When
32:59you talk about a sand rider and say what makes a good sand rider, you look at jet. The guy who can
33:06stand up and be very patient and both of them are, I think the style fits jet Lawrence a little bit
33:13better because he grew up in that. As you said, hunter Lawrence was racing in Europe. He rode a
33:18lot of hard pack tracks, sand tracks, mud where jet was coming up. He spent a lot of his time on
33:24the sand. Whatever they did is working out. Hunter sits down a little bit more. Overall,
33:30it's working out better for both of them. Jet has them covered on this one.
33:35I've heard you say it on your podcast that you think hunter in some ways might be more
33:38versatile when you get to the harder tracks. Yeah, I do think so. Early in the year that
33:42we saw hunter, I thought he got a lot more, he looked a lot more comfortable on the honda
33:47in the beginning part when they were struggling a little bit for our setup than jet did. The reason
33:52that was because hunter, once you sit down, you can put your weight down on that motorcycle to
33:56make it work. Because hunter had more of a versatile of his style, he was a little bit
34:02more versatile. I think he made some of the efficiencies, the deficiencies of the honda,
34:08he made it work by sitting down. I think jet struggled a little bit more. Now they figured
34:12it out. Now they're going to have a hard time trying to beat his brother. That's because of
34:16his riding style for sure. Honestly, what the honda team figured out is, go back to what they
34:21had last year. They had made big changes to the bike for supercross. It was much better in
34:25supercross. They assumed it would carry to motocross, but they found out after the first
34:29two rounds it did not. By then they had already ordered all those new parts for 24. So they had
34:34been scrounging around to find every leftover piece from 23 to get these bikes where they
34:41want them and get to the end of the year. Hunter almost goes down there. Yeah, he tried breaking
34:45out of that corner a little bit earlier. Again, just that hard pack and how slippery it is just
34:50caught up to him. For this guy, chase Sexton, the track is completely different than it was
34:56in practice. We were watching him make some changes. Whether he was speeding up the rebound
35:00or doing some changes, definitely looks like chase Sexton is struggling a little bit more.
35:04Out of all the races, especially after hang town at Sakamoto, this is going to be frustrating for
35:10him. He was right there with jet. He started right behind those two. Not only he lost a
35:15toe to jet, he lost a toe to hunter as well. For ktm and chase Sexton coming off a weak break,
35:22that's not what you want. That's going to hurt chase for sure.
35:27And this is going to hurt as jet Lawrence, guess what, everybody?
35:31It's another moto win streak in route here. Three in a row. This would be four.
35:38It's a long way to go to where he was. He had won 24 straight.
35:42But what's crazy, you and I were talking about this yesterday,
35:45he's still only lost one of these races overall in his career on a 450.
35:49Yeah, he's raced 15 races. He's won 14 of them. And the one he lost was this year.
35:55It seems like he's had a hard time. I was finally, Ferrandez got march banks,
36:00by the way. It's up to seven. Yeah. I mean, for Dillon, for sure, not where he wanted to be at,
36:07but he's fighting his way up. We saw him go down as well. He picked the bike up and started
36:11working his way. Now he's got a pretty good pace. He's running basically the same lap times as jet
36:16Lawrence. About a second off jet. Same as hunter. Nice to see Dillon out here still fighting.
36:23Yeah, that actually is a pretty good comeback. He was way off the radar,
36:26way out of the top ten early. I'm not sure exactly what spot he started in.
36:32We're just behind chase. But seventh now for Ferrandez. Barsha digging it out.
36:37That actually looked like a whip for style, but I think he was just saving it. I don't know if
36:41you saw that. He got kicked on the takeoff of that jump. I would just say it's style points.
36:47Anything that he does, let's just say that's what I meant to do. And what I mean to do is go out here
36:52and win another moto, claw him back in this points lead, this championship. Yeah, it's going to move
36:59into second at the end of this moto. Of course, there will be another one in a little over an hour.
37:07And they had their shot. He was definitely beat up after the crash at hang town. He figured out
37:12a way at Colorado and high point to, as we were saying, engineer a win. Maybe he didn't quite
37:18have his best stuff physically. Then the weekend off, he might be back to the old level this
37:24afternoon. Although there will be a second moto that will be an even tougher test.
37:30Looks good right now. Jet Lawrence closing in on four straight moto wins. A championship rebuild
37:40and a big moto win at southwick.
37:43It was. Hunter going to come across 6.4 seconds back. Here is Sexton third. And a huge gap back
38:00to the rest of the field as these three begin the breakaway in the motos and the championship.
38:06Sexton third. And Anderson is going to be nearly a minute off the lead.
38:13Sand in the mouth.
