Transcript
00:00:00Stay tuned after the show for an exclusive look
00:00:02inside the episode.
00:00:2549 years and thousands of miles removed from the room
00:00:29we shared in San Francisco, I offer,
00:00:32for your journalistic pleasures, my life story.
00:00:37Take us back to the beginning of this story of butchery.
00:00:41I love you, Louis.
00:00:41I love you too, baby brother.
00:00:43I could not join the transformation
00:00:45of those in attendance.
00:00:46He would not let me.
00:00:48Come to me.
00:00:48Be my companion.
00:00:51Session 10, the vampire Louis and the vampire Armand.
00:00:56I failed Louis once in my life.
00:00:57It wasn't in San Francisco.
00:00:59Why did I ruin my one act of cowardice?
00:01:02You broke one of the great laws.
00:01:04I don't know any great laws.
00:01:06Lestat never told me shit.
00:01:07We were on trial for murder.
00:01:09We were forced to watch.
00:01:11Oh, they'd kill me.
00:01:12His name was Magnus.
00:01:13He took me from my room as I kicked and screamed.
00:01:15I want to get out alive.
00:01:16You want a book.
00:01:18What say you for the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac?
00:01:23Banishment.
00:01:24Banishment.
00:01:25Banishment!
00:01:26A sentence worse than death.
00:01:27You saved Louis.
00:01:28Yes.
00:01:29No!
00:01:30No!
00:01:31But not her.
00:01:32Oh, my god!
00:01:33I could not prevent it.
00:01:35No!
00:01:36I could not prevent it.
00:01:55No!
00:01:56No!
00:02:26Mommy.
00:02:35Mom!
00:02:40Mommy.
00:02:43Mom.
00:02:45A quiet, easeful death.
00:02:52What else would it be?
00:02:55I had nowhere to go, no one to talk to.
00:03:04She was dead.
00:03:08I knew it.
00:03:11Claudia was dead.
00:03:14I could feel it, like I couldn't feel my hands, my back,
00:03:23like I could feel my heart pumping slower every night,
00:03:31my broken arm resetting itself, my ankles healed in the coffin,
00:03:41the flesh having circled around the insulating
00:03:45rocks of my deathbed.
00:03:46Are they still there, right now, in your feet?
00:03:55If you took an x-ray, they'd look like little cancers.
00:03:58You could remove them any time you wanted to.
00:04:03Or maybe he has, and he's been lying to you
00:04:05all these years for effect.
00:04:10What were the consequences of you saving Louie?
00:04:16Demotion, ridicule.
00:04:21Santiago had suspected I had rigged the audience
00:04:24to spare Louie's life, so he made
00:04:27certain I would not forget my insubordination
00:04:29as part of my penance.
00:04:33Darkness was delirium.
00:04:37I tried to paint alternatives.
00:04:40Lucid, what ifs?
00:04:47Wear a different suit the night you meet
00:04:49Lestat at the fair play.
00:04:52Snatch the piece of candy back from the barber
00:04:54when you're seven years old.
00:04:58Would I have been stronger sooner?
00:05:01Would I have resisted Lestat two decades later?
00:05:05Snatch the candy.
00:05:09Be the man in the different suit.
00:05:15But the suit changes nothing.
00:05:19And again, I'm kissing Lestat on the altar.
00:05:27I'm killing Lestat, but won't burn him.
00:05:30I'm killing Lestat, but won't burn him.
00:05:36I'm dragged off stage and buried alive.
00:05:44Penny candy is not the answer.
00:05:51Claudia is dead.
00:05:55The worst nights were the pragmatic ones.
00:05:59A rock shifts by my knee.
00:06:02Could I make another rock move?
00:06:05Could I free my knee to exploit the craftsmanship
00:06:08of the coffin?
00:06:11But it was all ravings.
00:06:13The rock hadn't moved.
00:06:15The craftsmanship was solid.
00:06:19Claudia is dead.
00:06:21When a vampire starts screaming from starvation,
00:06:26he hasn't much time left.
00:06:27I didn't know I was screaming.
00:06:31I had no energy to scream.
00:06:36If I had, I would have used it to ignite the clothes
00:06:39on my body, self-immolate.
00:06:44What was left to endure for?
00:06:47Claudia is dead.
00:06:49And as Louis withered away, life in the theater
00:06:52returned to abnormal.
00:06:55The old plays were remounted.
00:06:58The pack hunts revitalized, all under the increasingly
00:07:02self-satisfied eye of Santiago.
00:07:05You ruined his play.
00:07:07They didn't get to kill Louis on stage.
00:07:09And Santiago, impotent, was forced to give up
00:07:13his life for the sake of his family.
00:07:15They didn't get to kill Louis on stage.
00:07:18And Santiago improvised a worse death.
00:07:21He had outwitted me, hurt me deeply.
00:07:28And I played up that hurt.
00:07:31My subjugation cemented his power amongst the coven.
00:07:35So how did you get him out?
00:07:41I placed a sacrifice in an old vault coffin,
00:07:44to swap that coffin for Louis.
00:07:47I was the defeated vampire, Mr. Malloy.
00:07:51No one was looking.
00:07:54Uh-huh.
00:07:57Does anyone ever ask Lazarus if he wanted to be woke?
00:08:03I don't read the Bible much anymore.
00:08:05No one gives a shit about Lazarus's point of view,
00:08:08is what I remember.
00:08:10I tasted the blood.
00:08:12I knew it was his.
00:08:14I thought, Claudia is dead.
00:08:17I was dead.
00:08:21I was dead.
00:08:26But my rage, my rage had risen.
00:08:35Followed closely behind by my madness,
00:08:41they moved from shadow to shadow,
00:08:43towards the cemetery in Montmartre.
00:08:47Why that place, it wasn't certain.
00:08:51It wasn't safe to return to the apartment.
00:08:55That would imply it was rational.
00:08:58Proximity to the theater, maybe.
00:09:03My rage had been denied blood.
00:09:07My rage was lightheaded.
00:09:11My rage killed without a single measure of satisfaction.
00:09:17My rage found a forgotten crypt amongst the forgotten dead.
00:09:23My rage hid its killings there.
00:09:27And conspired, with my madness, on a plan for retribution.
00:09:33Prince.
00:09:34Sam.
00:09:35Sam.
00:09:36Three.
00:09:37Prince.
00:09:38Loukoumba.
00:09:39Three.
00:09:40Basilic.
00:09:41Four.
00:09:42Four.
00:09:43Four.
00:09:44Four.
00:09:45Four.
00:09:46Four.
00:09:47Four.
00:09:48Four.
00:09:50Prince.
00:09:52Loukoumba!
00:09:55Three.
00:09:56Basilic.
00:09:58Four.
00:09:59Murder.
00:10:05Sam.
00:10:07Sam!
00:10:13Yeah.
00:10:14Sam, I'm so close!
00:10:15You're not getting out of here!
00:10:17Fuck!
00:10:30Hey!
00:10:33What are you doing with the bike?
00:10:39Big ass!
00:10:44There's a lot of them in there.
00:10:46But some are awake before it gets them.
00:10:50I should think about taking heads.
00:10:55Speak English!
00:10:56You're not a farmer.
00:10:58I would use them as shitter.
00:11:01One of them tries to escape.
00:11:03You should stand at the top of the stairs.
00:11:06Behind the stairs.
00:11:08Cut their feet off if they go up.
00:11:10But enrage if they run downstairs for the soup.
00:11:13That's better.
00:11:15Louis.
00:11:17Louis.
00:11:18Marsha's a big boy.
00:11:20Gustave is strong.
00:11:21Why haven't you left Paris?
00:11:22If you get in a fight or delay, you'll be costumed with them.
00:11:25Pour more gas on this.
00:11:27And this one.
00:11:29You don't need to borrow your truck.
00:11:30Louis, I don't need to borrow your truck.
00:11:32You don't need to borrow your truck.
00:11:34Louis, I don't have any use for it now.
00:11:36I know you can hear me.
00:11:37You must leave Paris.
00:11:39Maybe you should answer him.
00:11:41He knows the theater more than you.
00:11:42Maybe you should shut up.
00:11:45Louis, save yourself.
00:11:48They're going to find out what I did.
00:11:49Shut up.
00:11:50Do not worry about me.
00:11:51I ain't fucking worried about you!
00:11:52Louis!
00:11:59Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:12:08Sam tossed her in the rat box.
00:12:10And the rat box was Sam.
00:12:11Hans hauled me off.
00:12:12Ugly costume.
00:12:13Twine.
00:12:14Watched her die.
00:12:15Quan hauled me out.
00:12:16Watched her die.
00:12:17Louis.
00:12:19Louis.
00:12:20Louis.
00:12:21Please listen to me.
00:12:24If I could explain to you the events,
00:12:27I think you would understand why it was
00:12:30I acted as I did.
00:12:34I know you will never forgive me.
00:12:36I am not seeking forgiveness.
00:12:41Louis?
00:12:43Is that you?
00:12:44Did you save me at the trial?
00:12:47Yes.
00:12:50You pulled me out of the wall?
00:12:52Yes.
00:12:55I could not save her.
00:12:56If I thought there was a way, I would have.
00:12:58Shut up. Shut up.
00:13:01However you manage,
00:13:03do not find yourself at the theater tomorrow night in curfew.
00:13:11Okay.
00:13:13Uh,
00:13:14did you know he was going to burn it down?
00:13:17No.
00:13:19But I could sense the fatalism in his thoughts.
00:13:22You warned him?
00:13:23Yes.
00:13:24He'd already betrayed you once.
00:13:26They were his coven for hundreds of years.
00:13:28Why risk it?
00:13:30My rage and madness were asleep.
00:13:33It was a test.
00:13:36I don't remember.
00:13:38If you're wrong, you're dead.
00:13:40There was 13 of them.
00:13:42There was 13 of them and one of me.
00:13:45I was going to die either way.
00:13:48Same question to you.
00:13:49They were your coven for hundreds of years.
00:13:52You had no feelings for any of them?
00:13:53I had complicated feelings.
00:13:56But you didn't warn any of them?
00:13:58No.
00:13:5913 to 1.
00:14:01Maybe you were hedging your bets?
00:14:03See who emerges from the ash heap?
00:14:05I didn't know his plan.
00:14:07I chopped my mind off to him, Daniel.
00:14:09My prevailing thought was
00:14:12if I'm not with him,
00:14:14I'm nothing.
00:14:16Him, I'm nothing.
00:14:19Okay.
00:14:20So what was the plan?
00:14:23The plan?
00:14:26I was going to die.
00:14:28And I was going to take as many of them with me as I could.
00:14:34When a vampire commits himself to coffin,
00:14:38all the senses collapse into submission.
00:14:42And the dark boundaries of the world
00:14:45begin to stretch out in all directions.
00:14:48And in this state,
00:14:50in the lair where they slept,
00:14:53I could have been a marching band
00:14:56or a jet engine taking off a tarmac.
00:14:59Until Paris spun back round to the sun,
00:15:03the advantage was mine.
00:15:12What's the point of living in the same way as you are, if you can't give yourself?
00:15:34I have an idea!
00:15:37Inflame my kidneys!
00:15:39Kidneys!
00:15:40Ah! God damn it!
00:15:42Ah!
00:15:52Six by fire.
00:15:54Two by blade.
00:15:56One by a combination of the two.
00:15:58No legs, one arm,
00:16:00still clutching onto his clarinet.
00:16:04Nine in all.
00:16:06And with no sign of Armand or Lestat.
00:16:10That meant four had escaped.
00:16:12Two out the front.
00:16:14Two through the sewers.
00:16:18But I had planned for contingencies.
00:16:20It had to be the London Coven.
00:16:22They have always been jealous of us.
00:16:24It's because we started speaking English.
00:16:26It's because we took over from Armand
00:16:28and they smelled weakness, you idiot!
00:16:30Or maybe it was Eclair.
00:16:32Eclair?
00:16:34We never got over you stealing Santiago!
00:16:36You tried drinking from Gustav Asker's
00:16:38West London!
00:16:40Aslan is an act of passion!
00:16:42Ah!
00:16:48Celeste.
00:16:50Lestat.
00:16:56I'm afraid, Celeste.
00:16:58Ah!
00:17:04You!
00:17:06Did I wake you?
00:17:08I tried to be quiet
00:17:10coming and going, but
00:17:12all those iron joists cracking
00:17:14and load-bearing beams falling down on you.
00:17:16Well...
00:17:18He's your companion with you.
00:17:20Didn't you hear?
00:17:22We broke up.
00:17:24Oh, I'd rather doubt that.
00:17:26You're my sister and my fledgling, but think what you want.
00:17:28Don't let him take credit for the workman role
00:17:30he played, Louis. It was me
00:17:32that planned their deaths.
00:17:36It was me
00:17:38that gave Claudia that hot exit
00:17:40from the garden. Come to me.
00:17:42Did Armand tell you what we did with our ashes
00:17:44after he pulled you from the wall?
00:17:46Come to me, Francis.
00:17:48We used her as eyeshadow for the next month's
00:17:50performances. We put them in the
00:17:52pepper shaker for the popcorn we sold
00:17:54in the aisles, and some nights, Louis...
00:17:56Come to me, Francis. I put a pinch of them
00:17:58in my fist before I closed my
00:18:00coffin at night. I would spit
00:18:02in them, and I'd use
00:18:04her hot, wet asses
00:18:06to pleasure myself.
00:18:08Come to me, Francis.
00:18:10It's Santiago to you,
00:18:12you firebug bugger!
00:18:14Nah, that's a Spaniard's name you took.
00:18:16Took it to forget who you were,
00:18:18Francis. Took it to
00:18:20compensate for what God denied you,
00:18:22Francis. That joke
00:18:24in between your legs and that farm girl,
00:18:26Lenora, who couldn't keep quiet
00:18:28about it. She only thought it was small
00:18:30because my testicles are so enormous.
00:18:32Then maybe it was the lip applause
00:18:34Francis got when Francis finally
00:18:36got on stage in London.
00:18:38For a week, as an understudy
00:18:40for Osric.
00:18:42Wasn't the nature of your transformation
00:18:44that made you change your name?
00:18:46The desperate begging,
00:18:48the urine racing down your leg
00:18:50as Francis desperately tried to
00:18:52take back his wish to be a vampire.
00:18:54I can see your
00:18:56maker's face now.
00:18:58Embarrassment washing over it
00:19:00as you asked.
00:19:02Cannot be
00:19:04called
00:19:06Santiago
00:19:08our girl.
00:19:10You make
00:19:12his voice
00:19:14as he walked away.
00:19:16I don't care what you call yourself.
00:19:18Call me
00:19:48Say that shit about
00:19:52Claudia to my face.
00:20:02Pre-dinner martini,
00:20:04a touch more vermouth, and the newspaper
00:20:06you asked for this morning, Mr. Malloy.
00:20:08Santiago's failure
00:20:10to protect his coven,
00:20:12how quickly he ran to save
00:20:14his own flesh, filled him
00:20:16with unworthiness.
00:20:18And it made him an uncomplicated
00:20:20seduction. He brought a cloak
00:20:22to a knife fight.
00:20:24And all my rage and madness exited
00:20:26my body.
00:20:28And nothing
00:20:30replaced it.
00:20:46When'd you start
00:21:00lying to me?
00:21:10The night of Madeleine's
00:21:12transformation.
00:21:14A while back then.
00:21:16We parted at Sacré-Cœur.
00:21:18I went back to make sure the coven would keep
00:21:20curfew, that you do
00:21:22what you were going to do in
00:21:24safety.
00:21:26They were all on stage waiting for
00:21:28me. Told me they had done
00:21:30a rewrite. Tossed the script
00:21:32at my feet and
00:21:34I saw the title
00:21:36and I
00:21:38thought
00:21:40it's my coven
00:21:42200 years
00:21:44or him.
00:21:48And at the time I could not count on your
00:21:50love lasting as long.
00:21:52You rehearsed it with Lestat?
00:21:54They rehearsed it
00:21:56with him.
00:21:58I stayed in my coven when I was there.
00:22:02When you spent
00:22:04nights over here.
00:22:06I lied
00:22:08to you over and over.
00:22:10Then one stick in all that time
00:22:12telling me
00:22:16make a different plan with me.
00:22:18I will
00:22:20spend my life making it up to you.
00:22:36You'll never make it up
00:22:38to me.
00:22:40I know.
00:22:46Is Lestat still in Paris?
00:22:48You'll never be able to kill him.
00:22:50That wasn't my question.
00:22:54Yes, he's still here.
00:22:58Wake me when it's night again.
00:23:08Ask
00:23:10for a chat.
00:23:12The lights
00:23:14going out of your blue eyes
00:23:16like
00:23:18all the summer days
00:23:20are gone.
00:23:38Was it a good day's rest?
00:23:44Does it
00:23:46take a lot out of you?
00:23:48Destroying everything
00:23:50in your wake?
00:23:56Well, almost
00:23:58everything.
00:24:00You look small.
00:24:02You look small.
00:24:10Please come home.
00:24:12This was Magnus' lair.
00:24:22Some distance between the happy couple.
00:24:26Details left
00:24:28to work out after the homicide of Frolic?
00:24:30This where he kept you?
00:24:32Chained to the wall?
00:24:34No. This was
00:24:36for the disappointments.
00:24:38The ones before me.
00:24:42He had a knack for design.
00:24:44Nordic blondes on walls,
00:24:46dirty blondes in piles.
00:24:48Learned about where the gremlin stands now.
00:24:50I don't care.
00:24:56I came here to have a think.
00:25:00On my origins.
00:25:04Why I do what I do.
00:25:08Why... Burned your daughter alive?
00:25:12Why you rehearsed a play
00:25:14that would burn your daughter alive?
00:25:16Why you crossed an ocean
00:25:18to rehearse a play
00:25:20that would burn
00:25:22your daughter alive?
00:25:24The great laws...
00:25:26What fucking law did you ever follow? Stop.
00:25:31I've come to kill you.
00:25:40I have the blood of Magnus in me.
00:25:42Magnus burned.
00:25:48I have the blood of Akasha in me.
00:25:52He doesn't know who that is.
00:25:56But the fact in and of itself
00:25:58makes your immediate desire an impossibility.
00:26:02I'd have to be willing
00:26:06when I'm not in the moon.
00:26:10My blood is your blood.
00:26:12And yet...
00:26:24Here's your death, Lestat.
00:26:28Here's your death.
00:26:30Here's your death.
00:26:56He and I are gonna spend the rest of our lives together.
00:26:58Wherever your miserable life takes you,
00:27:02wherever you find and endure time with,
00:27:04whatever pale proxy of me,
00:27:08I'll be with him.
00:27:12Just wanted you to know that.
00:27:18Wow.
00:27:21Hmm.
00:27:26Enjoy your...
00:27:34Let's see how long it holds.
00:27:41An odd phrase.
00:27:43What do you think he meant by that, Louis?
00:27:45It's fairly obvious.
00:27:47He didn't think we would make it.
00:27:5177 years.
00:27:54Almost to the day.
00:27:56We left him there.
00:27:58Walked Paris one last time,
00:28:00completely silent.
00:28:02Stopped for a moment at the Place de la Concorde.
00:28:04The Luxor Obelisk.
00:28:06I stood staring up at it
00:28:08as cars and carriages circled us.
00:28:11I said telepathically...
00:28:13Was it telepathically?
00:28:16I don't remember.
00:28:18I said, let's go see Egypt.
00:28:21Then sailed port to port.
00:28:23Settled in New York a good while.
00:28:25San Francisco.
00:28:27And we did.
00:28:29Here, there, everywhere, and Dubai.
00:28:34And that's the end of it.
00:28:37There's nothing else.
00:28:49End of session.
00:29:15He loved you?
00:29:19I can say that now.
00:29:23He loved you a great deal.
00:29:26It must have been terrible for him
00:29:28to see himself that night.
00:29:35Mind if I ask a few follow-up questions?
00:29:37There's just some things I've been
00:29:39jotting down along the way.
00:29:41Yeah, of course.
00:29:43It's just small stuff.
00:29:45Like, um...
00:29:48Like, you and the tractor salesman
00:29:50in the bar in New Orleans
00:29:52before you killed him,
00:29:54you said that Lestat telepathically told you
00:29:57that you were scaring the salesman.
00:30:00But a maker can't do that anymore
00:30:02after transformation, right?
00:30:04Uh, yeah.
00:30:06I don't know.
00:30:08Maybe he whispered it to me.
00:30:11Yeah.
00:30:13I figured as much.
00:30:15Uh...
00:30:17You said that four escaped the theater.
00:30:19Celeste, Estelle, Santiago, and...
00:30:21Sam.
00:30:23Right.
00:30:25The vampire Sam Barclay.
00:30:27We never quite figured out how he did it.
00:30:29Did you ever get to him?
00:30:31No.
00:30:33Time heals, Daniel.
00:30:35I believe he's a DJ now.
00:30:37A DJ?
00:30:39He wears a decorative helmet on his head when he performs.
00:30:41Does he?
00:30:43He's in two places at once
00:30:45at one point in your story.
00:30:47He's guarding Armand in the theater box,
00:30:49but you also have him
00:30:51helping to bury you below stage.
00:30:53He was with me in the box.
00:30:55Yeah, he was with Armand in the box.
00:30:57Oh, maybe he did a quick vamp
00:30:59back and forth.
00:31:01I just got it wrong.
00:31:03Rashid, should we begin dinner preparations?
00:31:05Yes, sir.
00:31:07I do hope you'll join us.
00:31:09I'd be honored.
00:31:11Look at my list one more time here.
00:31:13Another New Orleans thing.
00:31:15I mean...
00:31:17I'm sorry I'm jumping all over the place here,
00:31:19but the night that Lestat
00:31:21brings all those soldiers
00:31:23home and you tell him to throw them out,
00:31:25how many soldiers did he minefuck
00:31:27out of the townhouse that night?
00:31:29I don't know.
00:31:31Ten? Fifteen?
00:31:33More like thirty.
00:31:35Huh.
00:31:37Huh?
00:31:39Huh?
00:31:41Oh, well, it seems to me,
00:31:43I mean, back to the trial again,
00:31:45it seems to me that there was
00:31:47more than one person in the theater
00:31:49that night who could have saved you.
00:31:55Ha, ha, ha.
00:31:57Ha, ha.
00:31:59I know, I know.
00:32:01It's my job. I'm built this way.
00:32:03I know it's a stretch,
00:32:05but, um... It's in your nature, Mr. Malloy.
00:32:09Couldn't get out the door without lobbing one more bomb.
00:32:11Well, you said it yourself just now.
00:32:13He loved Louis. Lestat would have tried to save him
00:32:15as much as you did.
00:32:17And he certainly would have made it known that he had.
00:32:19Shall we take these follow-ups and specious theories to the dining room?
00:32:21We have something special
00:32:23prepared for you, Daniel.
00:32:25Uh, Santiago
00:32:27should
00:32:29hand the diary into the audience,
00:32:31have them feel the evidence
00:32:33in their hands.
00:32:35This is too early
00:32:37for Lestat to acknowledge Louis.
00:32:39Keep the tension.
00:32:41Have him look at Louis later
00:32:43the moment he describes meeting him
00:32:45in New Orleans. These are just some notes
00:32:47along the margins
00:32:49here.
00:32:51Uh, we need an animation
00:32:53here. It's not clear how extreme
00:32:55the hoarding was.
00:32:57Where did you get that?
00:32:59Read it for yourself.
00:33:07...
00:33:09...
00:33:11...
00:33:13...
00:33:15...

00:33:43That's when the Black
00:33:45Angel came.
00:33:47...
00:33:49But he came back.
00:33:51He did, with her.
00:33:53...
00:33:55...
00:33:57And now you rise from your chair
00:33:59and walk towards Claudia.
00:34:01...

00:34:05...
00:34:07...
00:34:09...
00:34:11...
00:34:13And how do you suppose that you will keep her quiet
00:34:15in this moment, hm?
00:34:17...
00:34:19More of your
00:34:21cheap theatrics?
00:34:23The judges will fog her mind.

00:35:23...
00:35:25...
00:35:27...
00:35:29...
00:35:43...
00:35:45Where does the bullshit start?
00:35:47Armand, Amadeu,
00:35:49Arun.
00:35:51You were supposed to die with Claudia.
00:35:53He didn't save you.
00:35:55you? Lestat did. He just took credit for it when the opportunity presented itself and
00:36:05you wasted everyone who could have told you differently. 77 years based on a seismic lie.
00:36:12It's a forgery, Louis. It's from the Talamasca. Sam was their guy in Paris. He gave it to
00:36:17them, they gave it to me here. Louis. Louis. Louis! Louis! It's for science, I'll just
00:36:45do it. Just like you put me to work in the wet room after you wanted me to suffer. Don't.
00:36:49One night, 72 years ago, you were over this, Louis. The pain of it left you. Don't let
00:36:54it burn an insignificance. Delivered by an insignificance. You are forgiving me for what
00:37:00part I played in their death. And time has opened back up to us. And we all want to see
00:37:04it. We want to see it. We want to see it. We want to see it. We want to see it. We want
00:37:31to see it. I'm guessing Rashid left after he brought me the newspaper. You're not to
00:37:51touch him. Do you understand? You harm him in any way, I will kill you. Do you understand?
00:38:10I'm leaving now. When I return, you need to be caught. You should gather your things from
00:38:21your room. I'll arrange a car and a plane to take you home. I'll see there's ten million
00:38:32dollars wired into your account. Thank you.
00:39:01I was hoping the canes would wait until July. I had two on the flow for new edition at the
00:39:05Essence Festival. But that's all shut it up now. Two on the flow? Must have cost you.
00:39:12Wouldn't she? Me and my bae was on the bad side. Then I see they got a new edition headlining
00:39:18the festival. She had a thing for Ralph when she was young. You believe that? Ralph, pretty
00:39:23mother. Then I think, well, each one on the flow is going to open back the door. She'll
00:39:29be back. She'll be back for Ralph. So, ask me this. How come you coming in when everybody
00:39:39else getting out? You so dead? Said to be at least at three. Flip your phone. First
00:39:49time in New Orleans? No. Did my luggage arrive? Yes, sir. Two bags in an oversized crate early
00:39:58in the morning. It's all waiting for you in your suite. Thank you. Very generous, Mr.
00:40:06Dulock. Thank you, sir. Your card? Your key? We're happy to have you as long as you'll
00:40:13have us. But we are boarding up the hotel for the hurricane. So, we're asking our guests
00:40:18to fill out this liability waiver. No problem. Now, everybody, if you want to turn your attention
00:40:28to the ride at them big green color gates, this is 1132 Broad Street, home of the most
00:40:35infamous party ever thrown in New Orleans. This is where two dozen members of high society,
00:40:40they walked in them doors right there. Ain't nobody ever seen them again. Take a picture
00:40:45if you need to. The year? It's 1940. The man that owned this town home and that year's
00:40:51King Arash, he went by the name Sebastian Melmoth. Now, now, history's going to have
00:40:56him go down a little something different. A Monsieur Lysander Lioncourt. He was a so-called
00:41:02Frenchman, a so-called seller of industrial machinery. But now tell me, tell the crime
00:41:07dog, why would a man, a known hoarder and an infamous recluse be named King Arash in
00:41:15the first place? Sebastian knew a fella by the name of Tom Anderson. He was a former
00:41:22Louisiana state representative and a full-time Bourbon Street gangster. Mr. Melmoth, he wasn't
00:41:27alone in 1132. Also in residence was a local Creole hustler and his little child bride.
00:41:35They were running a voodoo cult in the bathrooms above the Courtyard Garden. Yes, they were.
00:41:41Now, it's Mardi Gras, 1940. Mr. Melmoth and Tom Anderson, they brought back the who's
00:41:49who of who that. The next morning, couldn't nobody find head to head piece of none of
00:41:53them. But what did they find? Blood in between the floorboards of three different rooms.
00:41:58Bits of indeterminate pieces of bone inside the factory-sized incinerator. Why did Tom
00:42:05Anderson, Mr. Melmoth, the hustler and the child bride lure these particular citizens
00:42:11to this house of lies and intrigue?
00:42:35I saw a crane smashed into a low rise. Big chunks of shit. Trash cans, mailboxes blowing
00:42:51around everywhere. I'm fucking wild out there. Shut up. Out there, running around this god
00:43:07damn hurricane out there. Shut up. I mean, we should be. Out of town is where we should
00:43:13be. Shut up, you crazy old man plane. Who's you? Hello. Who's he? Louie. That's Louie?
00:43:27She's Louie? Get out. Get out. Where? I mean, there's a mad hurricane outside. I keep fucking
00:43:38telling y'all. Shit. God damn it. I'll show you rats, you French fucking bitch. Motherfuckers.
00:43:51Fire gift in your honor. Where is some fledgling? All the millennials are. He is an excellent
00:44:04rat catcher. Would you like one? No, let's start. Hello, Louie. Passing through? No.
00:44:32I came to see you. And what does your companion think of that? I'm companion enough for myself
00:44:41now. Good for you. I'm sorry I don't have much time. I'm in the middle of rehearsing.
00:44:53Rehearsing? I'm going on tour. Margaret, she seems... she seems to have retired. And I
00:45:05thought you're better than me to carry on the great work. Just need about 50 more years
00:45:14of practice. Siri, pause. Did you save my life in Paris?
00:45:45I gave you to our mom. You tell me if that was safe. Why didn't you say it was me who
00:45:57saved you, not him? I don't like to point out my virtues. Besides, I knew you'd figure
00:46:06it out. And look, you have. I was right. All hail me. Been enduring here? Not enduring.
00:46:33Living? Here in New Orleans. Whole time. It's my home. I am she, she is me.
00:46:50I didn't know it was a gift. I wore it like a curse. I was selfish. I tried to make nights
00:47:11awful for you. I see. I wanted you to suffer. Because I was suffering. Hey, shall we list
00:47:28all the ways we have wronged each other and why it will never be right between monstrous
00:47:33I came to thank you. For the gift you offered me. The gift I denied. For the nights in front
00:47:45of me. Where I might learn to live honestly. Thank you.
00:47:54September 8th, 1973. September 8th, 1973. It was 11.07 here.
00:48:25It would have been 9.07 in San Francisco. Armand called me. Were you there? Yeah.
00:48:39Did you hurt yourself? I was lost. And that was in a dark way. I was thinking about...
00:49:00I can't get her out of my mind. You have the same problem. I can't, Louie. I can't.
00:49:29I can't. I can't. It's not on you. Can you hear me? I carried her home. I made you turn
00:49:42on her. I could have saved her from the fire. Until a half century later she... She looked
00:49:56at me at the end. Like a child. Looking to her father. But I was new.
00:50:26I was new.
00:50:57And we are back in 5, 4, 3, 2...
00:51:05Welcome back, Atlanta. And welcome to my next guest, the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning
00:51:09investigative journalist and author of the current best-selling fictional memoir,
00:51:14Interview with the Vampire, Daniel Malloy. Thanks, Leonard. It's a memoir. It's not fiction.
00:51:20It is one of the main topics of debate regarding your book. Is it true or is it a joke?
00:51:26Well, I've sold 5 million books in four months. Yes. You can't see the forest for the trees
00:51:32they killed printing it. Hey, Atlanta, check out the book fair this weekend.
00:51:35It is going to be quite something. The Washington Post... The Bezos bugle.
00:51:39That's a good one. It called your book a sophomoric footnote in an otherwise stellar career.
00:51:46Conceptually weird... Middle finger to the publishing industry that turned its back on him
00:51:51a decade ago. I don't read reviews. Is it true you shop this book to every major publisher
00:51:57in the country and the UK? What is this? It's a legitimate question. No, it's not.
00:52:02I mean, you haven't even told your viewers what the book is about. Oh, good point.
00:52:07The book purports to be an interview with an actual vampire. Oh, I know what it's about.
00:52:11It's about you, Leonard, trying to go viral with your dinky little provincial news desk.
00:52:17Yeah, I did. I did interview an actual vampire. Oh, here's the camera.
00:52:22I interviewed an actual vampire. Actually, two vampires, a species that's lived among us
00:52:26for centuries, and it's supported by a mountain of historical documentation.
00:52:31You took a noble career. I didn't even read it. Put it in the shrine.
00:52:34Didn't read the book. You were one of our finest, and now you're a Bigfoot hunter
00:52:39chasing Jesus's bloodline. Hey, man, I've sold millions of these books, more than
00:52:44Johnny Grisham or Prince Harry and the Prisoner of Santa Barbara.
00:52:48It's a great f***ing read, and you're a hack. What a delight.
00:52:53Thanks so much for being here, Daniel Malloy. Can't wait to read the book.
00:52:57F***.
00:53:28Louie?
00:53:29Hunt him down.
00:53:31Louie, Louie the Lack, it's me. Listen, your royalty checks keep bouncing back to me, man.
00:53:37I need a forwarding address.
00:53:39Why not send them to your editors at the Tala Mosca?
00:53:42The shit they made me take out? No editors next book, I promise.
00:53:47There won't be a next book. There shouldn't have been a first book.
00:53:51You want the ten million back? Just say it, man. Send me an address.
00:53:55You know where I live?
00:53:57I really wouldn't be staying put if I were you.
00:54:01I'm guessing you haven't heard from my maker.
00:54:04No.
00:54:05F***ing asshole.
00:54:07I'm sorry you were burdened out of spite. I shouldn't have left you alone with him.
00:54:12Make it up to me. We'll do a follow-up book.
00:54:15What do you want, Daniel?
00:54:18I'm worried about you.
00:54:21I'm fine.
00:54:23I keep hearing the other vamps talking about you.
00:54:26They're really f***ing pissed off about our book.
00:54:28You want to write another with me?
00:54:30Sequels, audiobooks, sex toys.
00:54:33Damn, you've become a cold killer.
00:54:36You still haven't read it, have you?
00:54:41It's the top of my stack.
00:54:43You said that last month.
00:54:45It's getting early here, Daniel.
00:54:47Get out of Dubai, Louie.
00:54:49Hey, where'd you get those headphones?
00:54:51Kill him.
00:54:52Or bake him.
00:54:55Stuff him in the oven while I control him.
00:55:02We'll all get a job.
00:55:10Burn it.
00:55:13A heretic banquet.
00:55:18Burn it.
00:55:21Left a mission.
00:55:25The skyscraper.
00:55:26The skyscraper.
00:55:27The skyscraper.
00:55:28The skyscraper.
00:55:29The grove.
00:55:30Quiet now.
00:55:31Who is that?
00:55:32Who's that?
00:55:33All of you.
00:55:36Who's that?
00:55:37Shh, shh, shh, shh.
00:55:40This is the vampire Louie Dulac.
00:55:43I live in the penthouse apartment at the Al-Sharaf Towers in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
00:55:50The security staff here is robust, but mortal.
00:55:54My front door is always unlocked, as are the windows to my balcony,
00:55:58which were designed with a protective film coating for those of us sun-challenged.
00:56:06So for all you cowards out there talking shit,
00:56:10talking about taking a run at me,
00:56:14hear this now,
00:56:16and hear it plain.
00:56:20I own the night.
00:56:42And that's the end of it, and there's nothing else.
00:56:44That's the end of our season.
00:56:45It would appear that all is lost,
00:56:50and these significant characters,
00:56:52who hopefully have entertained and fascinated us for all of the season,
00:56:57come to their end.
00:56:59Claudia is dead.
00:57:00I was dead.
00:57:01Louie feels deeply responsible for her.
00:57:04He feels responsible for the good things that happened,
00:57:07and the bad things that happened to her.
00:57:09My rage had risen.
00:57:13Had risen.
00:57:15Followed closely behind by my madness.
00:57:20However you manage, do not find yourself at the theater tomorrow night at curfew.
00:57:24Burning the theater down physically was really difficult,
00:57:27because keep in mind, we were lighting fires in an old wooden building,
00:57:33and we had firemen and everybody standing by every time a match was lit.
00:57:38There were three people there.
00:57:40We knew that there was going to be a fire,
00:57:42so the other thing that we did is,
00:57:45we put a layer of cement board underneath all of our flooring.
00:57:50We put cement board behind walls,
00:57:52so that even if our finishes were wood,
00:57:54there was something underneath it that was going to help with fire prevention
00:57:57in the existing structure.
00:58:03Have them go out with their dessert.
00:58:04Every one of them.
00:58:05Burn it down.
00:58:06Let them burn.
00:58:07He did what I might do.
00:58:09That's his sister, his daughter, his companion,
00:58:12and they were very vengeful.
00:58:14So, occasionally, an eye for an eye.
00:58:17Nine in all.
00:58:20That meant four had escaped.
00:58:22In shooting that scene, it's such an iconic part of the book,
00:58:26but it's also like a very iconic part of the film.
00:58:29I think we've done something different.
00:58:32Hello, Francis.
00:58:36Louis has just left the theatre.
00:58:38Now he's on his way to get Santiago,
00:58:41who's the ringleader.
00:58:44Come to me, Francis.
00:58:46It's Santiago to you!
00:58:48There's an understudy for Osric.
00:58:51I think his main plan, really, with Santiago,
00:58:55is to just, like...
00:58:58I am about to film my death.
00:59:02Is that a big spoiler?
00:59:04No, it isn't, not if you've read the books.
00:59:06It's a combination of stuntmen, me, and a fake head,
00:59:10which, fortunately, I work with in make-up designer,
00:59:13Tammy Lane, on a different show,
00:59:15and they did a full cast of my head.
00:59:17It's a bit of a...
00:59:19It's a bit of a...
00:59:21It's a bit of a...
00:59:23It's a bit of a...
00:59:25They've finished my show
00:59:26and they did a full cast of my head,
00:59:28so, um, they have one in stock.
00:59:31He's made of rubber, so he's pretty solid.
00:59:33He's really hard to destroy, just like Ben Daniels.
00:59:36I was really glad I didn't have to do it again.
00:59:39It's so awful if you're claustrophobic.
00:59:41You're encased in gel and plaster
00:59:43with just tiny holes through your nostrils
00:59:45for 15 minutes.
00:59:47There was just, just quite a sentiment.
00:59:49That was our conversation about this scene.
00:59:53text did it to me given what a wonderful character been created with Santiago it
01:00:14was fitting to give him a sort of real cinematic death say that shit about
01:00:19Claudia to my face the lights going out of your blue the Louis and stat
01:00:31relationship with episode 8 is lovely conclusion to the full two seasons of
01:00:37their relationship at the beginning in Magnus's lair Louis doesn't know how
01:00:43much was that did to save Louie's life he does he's not aware of that at that
01:00:48point why you crossed an ocean to rehearse a play that would burn your
01:00:52daughter alive Louie really just does the thing that he thinks will most
01:00:57destroy Lestat which is leave him here's your death let's stop and leave him for
01:01:03someone else you know the stats deep deep insecurity is the thing that Louie
01:01:09just pour salt on in that moment Louie doesn't have all the information just to
01:01:14clarify Lestat really thinks that Louie knows that he saved him so he's quite
01:01:20surprised when he turns up with Armand and Louie's blaming him for Claudia's
01:01:24death which is you know fair enough it's Lestat he was a part of it but they all
01:01:28were part of it he and I are gonna spend the rest of our lives together there's
01:01:32very interesting dynamic between Lestat and Armand with Lestat looking at Armand
01:01:36and Armand thinking oh my god enjoy you you could just ruin everything for me
01:01:40right now and he doesn't let's see how long it holds everything he's been
01:01:44playing up until this point the facade of the stoic wise responsible 514 year
01:01:51old vampire who sticks to his principles has been shown to be a complete lie back
01:01:58to the trial again it seems to me that there was more than one person in the
01:02:02theater that night who could have saved you Lestat would have saved Claudia if
01:02:06he had the energy I believe that to my core it's just that he had to save
01:02:13Louie you were supposed to die with Claudia he didn't save you Lestat did
01:02:34what we discover in the course of the 15 episodes of these two guys is that they
01:02:41have such profound love for each other but they are really capable of hurting
01:02:46each other in unspeakable ways hello Lestat hello Louie and I think that
01:02:51that's where they get in the final embrace in New Orleans I don't want to
01:02:56speak for them because we don't hear what they say as an audience member I
01:02:59see them forgiving each other for what they've done I carried her home I made
01:03:06you turn up she looked at me at the end like a child looking to her father it
01:03:17was a beautiful ending for this whole chaotic revenge Louie that we see in
01:03:23those last couple of episodes it's a beautiful scene and yeah there's things
01:03:29said at the end that nobody will ever know other than me and Sam
01:03:39it is one of the main topics of debate regarding your book is it true or is it
01:03:46a joke in this scene we understand that Mallory is a vampire and I'm very
01:03:53excited about that as a fan the reveal really happens in a beat it happens in
01:03:58taking off sunglasses I'm guessing you haven't heard from my maker Eric
01:04:04Bogosian both was surprised and not at all when he realized that his character
01:04:09Malloy was to become a vampire I'm sorry you were burdened out of spite you get a
01:04:13sense in that like final interaction with them in this season that Daniel has
01:04:18become kind of like an annoying little brother to Louie you still haven't read
01:04:22it have you it's the top of my stack you said that last month it's getting early
01:04:27get out of Dubai Louie Louie's inviting of all the vampires to come and get him
01:04:32this is the vampire Louie Duloc it's his signing off so for all you cowards out
01:04:37there talking I think that talking about taking a run at me he needs that
01:04:42friction hear this now he needs something to fight against I own the
01:04:48night
01:04:57you
01:05:27you
