Transcript
00:00I'm Sean O'Connell from CinemaBlend.
00:03Gentlemen, how are you, sir?
00:05Hello.
00:06He's like doing his Instagram or something.
00:08I don't know what he's doing.
00:10I was watching my pictures yesterday
00:13with my friend LeBron James and some random guy.
00:16Like, me!
00:17You?
00:18He's got pictures of him, LeBron, and me together.
00:21And he's so excited.
00:22I thought it was a fan.
00:23A fan?
00:24You.
00:25Oh, no.
00:25It's Adam Sandler.
00:26Let's get to work.
00:34How are you, man?
00:35I'm wonderful.
00:36I love this movie.
00:37I cannot wait for people to check it out.
00:39I'm really excited.
00:39Thank you.
00:40Thanks.
00:41Adam, I want to start with you.
00:42Is there such a thing as trash talking in the acting
00:44community?
00:45Oh, that's good.
00:45That's a great question.
00:46Get your hands off of me, man.
00:48I talk a lot of trash when we're shooting.
00:50Yeah, when we're shooting, I would
00:52have an amazing take going.
00:54And Wancho, because he's from the NBA world of trash talking,
00:58would just start saying nasties.
01:00I'd be like, that's not in the script, homie.
01:02Don't do that.
01:03Let me finish my line.
01:04He'd be like, your mother's this, and your mother's that.
01:08No.
01:08No, the answer is no.
01:09There's only support in this town.
01:13I don't think it goes that deep, no.
01:16Yeah, I don't think they get too disrespectful in the games.
01:19But in the movie, I get really disrespectful.
01:21So yeah, it's crazy.
01:23There are some things that you say that I felt went over
01:26the line.
01:26Yeah, a lot of things that I'm saying over the line.
01:29Does that level of trash talk or trash talk
01:32begin all the way back to when you're kids?
01:35At what level of playing does it really start to kick in?
01:38Oh, you're trapped, man.
01:39The kids that I see now today, that's
01:41like fifth grade, fourth grade, they talking trash.
01:44We wasn't talking trash back then.
01:46But they's talking trash already because the game
01:49is evolving year after year after year.
01:52So I mean, it's getting pretty bad.
01:55Where you from?
01:56Spain, sounds weird.
01:58You think you can stop me?
01:59Welcome to America.
02:01I love the moment when Adam's character has
02:03to pull out his phone and call Dirk Nowitzki
02:06to prove that he is who he is as a talent scout.
02:09So I'm curious, who's the most famous person
02:10you have in your phone contacts?
02:13Adam.
02:14Yeah, by far.
02:16Yeah, definitely.
02:18Definitely the most famous person I know.
02:20Oh yeah, how about you?
02:21Who's the most?
02:22In your contacts, who is the most?
02:24I know you got some NBA guys.
02:25No, I think probably you.
02:27Me?
02:28Don't ever call me.
02:29Oh my god.
02:30Don't ever use that number.
02:32When I'm trying to show somebody who I am,
02:35I probably would call Pat Bev.
02:39Yeah, I call Pat Bev, yeah.
02:42That's what I would call, I call Pat Bev.
02:44Who is the most famous in your phone?
02:47Oh, I got so many, it's insane.
02:49Oh, wow.
02:51Name somebody, you just name a famous person,
02:54I'll tell you if they're in my phone.
02:55OK, you got Barack Obama?
02:57No.
02:58Hell yes.
03:00Well, not Obama, but a guy who knows.
03:03OK.
03:04That wasn't him, that wasn't even close to him.
03:07Wancho, please don't tell my children I said this,
03:09but I have two sons and the second one is better
03:11at basketball than the first.
03:13Because he played against his older brother the entire time
03:16and played up.
03:17I was curious if that was similar to your experience.
03:19I mean, different games.
03:21Yeah, my brother and me, we are different games.
03:25He's great at what he does, I'm great at what I do.
03:28We both won with national team, world championships.
03:31That's probably the best accomplice
03:33we'll have winning with your country.
03:35And I'm so proud of him, what he achieved, how hard he worked,
03:40how he became as a player and as a person.
03:42And we love so much each other.
03:44He's not just a brother, we are best friends.
03:47Right, certainly can grab a rebound too.
03:50Taking me to see basketball or bare knuckle boxing.
03:53We do everything.
03:54So the movie also makes the journey to the combine
03:57incredibly nerve wracking with the amount of pressure
03:59that's put on people.
04:00Was it a pretty accurate portrayal
04:01of that journey as well too?
04:03Yeah, for sure.
04:04I think it shows like the life outside of just them
04:08making it to the draft.
04:10It shows like the hustle as what the movie's called,
04:13like the dedication, the time that it takes
04:16and everything that it takes until getting there.
04:18So I think it was outstanding.
04:21The line that hit the hardest to me,
04:23obsession is gonna be talent every time.
04:25And I'm curious if that applies to filmmaking
04:28and the filmmaking community as well.
04:31Yeah, I mean, I think obsession by extension,
04:35work hours beats talent.
04:38Cause I'm not that talented, but I try to work a lot.
04:41I try to work hard.
04:43I'm curious how much basketball you actually have to shoot,
04:47to film to get the shots that you want,
04:49to get the finished shots that you want,
04:50especially when you have an environment
04:52like you often have in this movie,
04:53which is your players playing in a massive crowd
04:57or trying to pull off specific shots.
04:59How much do you have to actually dedicate to film?
05:03Each game, I think we had four to five days to shoot
05:08and we would choreograph and rehearse them before shooting.
05:13And so the way we did it is we shot the full game
05:17on the first day through what we called Stanley vision.
05:20So that was Adam's perspective of the game.
05:23We'd look at the Stanley vision game
05:28and we would talk about the editorial needs
05:31for the game after that.
05:33And we had a lot of different techniques
05:35that we would use to implement
05:38or to accentuate the moments in between
05:41and heighten the moments in between the game.
05:44And so the editors would cut those different techniques
05:48into a day after day.
05:49So maybe we do a day of tarot,
05:52which was like a tiny little remote control car
05:54that spun around the players,
05:56or a day of closeup dunks,
06:00or a day of whatever it was,
06:02or a day where we would do these different techniques
06:05and we would build the scene throughout the day.
06:07And then the final day,
06:09Louis and Tim, who were the second unit team,
06:12would come in and fill the last little elements
06:15and closeups in with the doubles.
06:19When you walk on that court,
06:20Look at me.
06:23You have to think I am the best guy out there.
06:27Adam, why the Sixers and not the Knicks?
06:31I thought Sixers just felt neat.
06:35That town lives for the Sixers.
06:39I mean, and New York lives for the Knicks too,
06:41but just kind of made more sense.
06:43Made more sense.
06:44Made more sense for,
06:47I think, that's a good question.
06:50I'm gonna come back to you on that one.
06:52All right, sounds good.
06:52Let's timestamp this.
06:54Who wins the finals and in how many games?
06:56Ooh, that's good.
06:57How many games do you think it's gonna take?
06:59I would love to see seven games
07:01and I will go with the Greens.
07:03I will go with Boston.
07:04I used to play there.
07:05I mean, I got a lot of loved ones there.
07:08I mean, I can fall in love with the city,
07:10with the fans, with all the players.
07:12They got the talent.
07:13They wore their ass off and they deserve it.
07:16There you go.
07:17All right, I gotta roll with Steph Curry.
07:19He's my boy from Charlotte, so.
07:20Well, I see you, I see you, Jersey.
07:22Steph Curry, just so you know,
07:27can hit from anywhere.
07:30I've heard this.
07:30Just so you know.
07:32Just so you know.
07:33Yeah, breaking news.
07:35It doesn't matter what angle he's at,
07:37he's gonna find a way.
07:38That's just so you know.
07:39The Celtics and, man,
07:42I don't want Draymond to be mad at me for saying this.
07:45I want Draymond to get another ring, man.
07:47Like, I like the Warriors to win,
07:50but I just think the Celtics got too much.
07:52I might be wrong.
07:53So Draymond, if you see,
07:55because I haven't said this in the previous ones,
07:57Draymond, if you see this,
07:59I want you to get a ring,
08:00but I just don't know if y'all got enough
08:01for Jalen Brown, Tatum, Al Horford,
08:07Peyton Pritchard coming off the bench.
08:08Like, they got a really good team.
08:10All right, last question.
08:11What's the best basketball movie in You Can't Say Hustle?
08:17My favorite?
08:18Sure.
08:19It's Blue Chips.
08:20Oh, it's a great one.
08:22I love Blue Chips.
08:23I think it's amazing.
08:25I think that the,
08:26I think it's amazing.
08:28I love the way they shot basketball.
08:30I love Shaq in it.
08:32You know, I love Nick Nolte's insane in that movie.
08:34I think it's great.
08:37Let's face it.
08:37It's you against you out there.
08:41So let me ask you again.
08:43Do you love this game?
08:51Punch Drunk Love turns 20 this year.
08:53That's great.
08:54And we all look at that movie and we say,
08:56oh, that's the movie that showed other sides of Adam
08:58and what he could do.
08:59But is it, do you really view it as something
09:01that changed a lot for you?
09:03I view it as something that I had an amazing time doing
09:06and it might've opened up other thoughts about me.
09:10I'm sure that happened.
09:12In my brain, I always thought, yeah,
09:14maybe one day I'll do a different style of movie.
09:17And luckily Paul wrote that movie,
09:20called me up, said, let's go.
09:22And I hear about that movie a lot.
09:25So it means a lot to me and I had an amazing time
09:28and Paul's one of my best buddies.
09:31I love him.
09:32And so that's the greatest thing
09:33that happened with that movie.
