00:00Saeed Rezaoui travels by bus in the Iranian capital Tehran nearly every day.

00:08The buses run on diesel, and he wants to change that.

00:12That's why he founded a start-up that aims to bring cleaner fuel to buses and trucks.

00:19My idea is to produce biofuel from used cooking oil.

00:24Even sustainable aviation fuel can be made from the used cooking oil.

00:28This is the fuel for airplanes.

00:32Cooking oil is made from renewable natural products.

00:37The entrepreneur gets it from restaurants, which struggle to get rid of used cooking

00:41oil.

00:45In a makeshift factory, Rezaoui and his eight workers are turning it into biofuel, which

00:50is then sold to local logistics firms.

00:54And because biofuels help protect the climate, the entrepreneur is earning so-called carbon

00:59credits with every litre for preventing carbon emissions.

01:04Unfortunately, due to the very low price of fuel in our region, sustainable fuels have

01:10not been noticed until now.

01:13But we intend to create this demand through private diplomacy, public advocacy and awareness

01:21rising.

01:23The entrepreneur would like to sell his idea in other countries where public awareness

01:27of environmental and climate protection is much higher.

01:32But that's very difficult due to Western sanctions against Iran.

01:38And Rezaoui doesn't believe that the country's presidential elections will bring about much

01:43change.

01:44Actually, I don't believe that any of the candidates would be able to bring major change.

01:51The situation in Iran and internationally doesn't allow that.

01:55But sometimes also a small step in the right direction would be helpful.

02:00And until then, the entrepreneur will continue working on his plan to create a market for

02:05climate-friendly biofuels in Iran.

02:08And the interest he's seeing gives him reason to be optimistic.
