Julian Assange is a famous whistleblower and journalist known for starting WikiLeaks in 2006.

He gained fame in 2010 for revealing secret military files and exposing civilian casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan. This made some people see him as a hero for the truth, while others saw him as a criminal.

Facing charges in the US for leaking classified documents, Assange sought refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy for seven years, fearing extradition.

After five years in prison in the UK, he has been released. His release follows a plea deal under the US Espionage Act, avoiding US jail time. Moreover, intense diplomatic efforts, especially from Australia, led to this outcome after the UK High Court reviewed his constitutional press freedoms.
