00:00Syed Husin Ali, a founding member of PKR, died early this morning,

00:09Party Information Chief Fahmy Fazil said. He was 87.

00:14His son, Ali Syed Husin told FMT three days ago,

00:18Syed Husin was unconscious and warded at Selayang Hospital.

00:23Syed Husin became PKR Deputy President following the merger of

00:27Parti Raya Malaysia, of which he was President, and Parti Keadilan Nasional in 2003.

00:34In December 1974, Syed Husin, who was then a University Malaya Associate Professor,

00:41was detained under the now-repealed Internal Security Act for six years

00:46following protests by farmers in Baling and students in Kuala Lumpur.

00:51According to Fahmy, Syed Husin had contributed much to the party and the people

00:56through the publication of many books, including Two Faces, Unspoken Detention,

01:02which recounts his experience of being detained under the ISA,

01:06and History and Basis of the Struggle for Justice.

01:10Fahmy said that Syed Husin's views were respected in the party

01:14and were often referred to by the party leaders,

01:17adding that he was patient, gentle, firm in discipline and gave a lot of advice.
