00:00I'm above the Celebes Sea, a stretch of tropical water situated between Malaysia and the Philippines.
00:11I'm heading for a group of islands with almost no habitation on them.
00:16I'm part of the biggest archipelago on earth.
00:21The reef below me is part of the Coral Triangle, and it's absolutely vast.
00:26It's almost the size of Australia.
00:30I'm going to show you how to stay alive on remote islands like these, where so many castaways before me have failed.
00:38OK, we need altitude to take us up.
00:40OK, let's go.
00:41This will be the ultimate challenge.
00:43OK, about 30 seconds.
00:45We're at 10,000 feet. This is one jump I've got to get right.
00:49OK, he's climbing up now.
00:51Here goes.
01:00I'm at terminal velocity, around 130 miles an hour.
01:11What I'm looking for now is a safe point of entry close to the island.
01:22I can't land on the island.
01:24Just trees and cliffs.
01:27The beach is too narrow, and the reef will cut me to shreds.
01:30I'm heading for deep water.
01:33I need to land this well.
01:36It's difficult to judge distance with just ocean beneath me.
01:40Ready for impact.
01:43I've got to fly it all the way in.
01:46Now to get clear of this rig and make to the shore.
01:51It doesn't look very far from here, but I've learned from experience, distances at sea can be deceptive.
01:59What you think might only be half a mile can often end up taking you ages.
02:05Come on, you need to stick with me on this bit.
02:08I've got to watch myself on the coral reef.
02:10One cut out here could spell bad news.
02:17Steep-sided islands like this are thought to be the remains of the cone of a volcano.
02:22Most of which are still there.
02:25I've got to be careful.
02:28Steep-sided islands like this are thought to be the remains of the cone of a volcano.
02:33Most of which has now been eroded away.
02:36It's a remote and hostile environment that has had little human interference.
02:41Nothing very beachy coconut about this island, look.
02:48The primary rainforests are hard places to survive.
02:52Everything's just locked into a battle here.
02:55A battle for light and for survival.
02:58That's what makes them tough.
03:01Let's head up first.
03:03To understand what's available on the island, you need to get a clear view.
03:08And for that, you need high ground.
03:15Truly hellish terrain, all of this.
03:19Everything grabbing onto you.
03:22Cutting and pulling you back.
03:26Ah!
03:32I'd never get up this, look.
03:34That is all just so slippy.
03:37This is fine, look.
03:39That goes all the way to the top.
03:42But it's way too thin to be able to hold on to that.
03:48These ones are a bit thicker.
03:50These roots fan out from the trunk, trying to get a purchase into the shallow soil.
03:55And that is definitely going to be strong enough for me.
04:00OK, let's get this to go.
04:04It's around four storeys to the top.
04:06Once I've committed, there's no turning back.
04:11The best technique is to use your legs to drive your body upwards.
04:16Rely on just your arms, and you're going to exhaust yourself so fast.
04:23These sort of things, you've just got to pace yourself.
04:28Doing a climb like this is possible now.
04:30But as your body weakens, with limited food and water, it could soon become impossible.
04:36Sorry, I can't talk at the moment.
04:42But I've got myself on this knee.
04:49Try and get some blood and oxygen back in the lungs.
04:54Then work out the next day.
04:56No getting away from it. It's hard work getting out of that.
05:00It's a long way down that.
05:05OK, I want to get across to these thinner ones over here.
05:09Get out that way.
05:11OK, it's getting right up to me first.
05:15OK, I'm going to try and get across.
05:18OK, I'm going to try and get across.
05:20Get out that way.
05:22OK, it's getting right up to me first.
05:42These thin vines feel strong enough to take my weight, but they're much more difficult to climb.
05:47Especially as my arms feel like lead weights now.
05:53Pretty darn awkward position.
06:01We're up this bit.
06:03Just got to get to the top, and then I can sort out my next move.
06:07It's good now, it's good.
06:12I feel a bit like I've done one of those military PT rope sessions.
06:16You just can't see anything through all this canopy.
06:20Just keep moving on.
06:21See if we can get a view out from over there.
06:29It's so humid under the canopy of the jungle here.
06:35Working this hard can dehydrate you in less than 30 minutes.
06:40This is the sort of leaf that would have water in it.
06:42Look, it's clinging to the branch.
06:44Any rainwater is going to come down here and collect in there.
06:50Look, not on that one.
06:55The survivor needs to build a mental map of where they are.
06:58Detailing resources and layouts as you discover them.
07:05This is more like it.
07:09Proper view out over the jungle canopy.
07:13Basically, we've got a big land mass over there.
07:16Steep banks on both sides, and then dense jungle canopy as well down below.
07:22Get deserted on an island, and you'll need a base.
07:25The shoreline's the perfect place.
07:32The shore's where you'll find food and sea rescue if it comes your way.
07:36And with a bit of luck, provide the island survivor with the most prized commodity of all, fresh water.
07:43When it rains on the island, all the water's going to go one way, and that's down.
07:48Might be my best chance of finding drinking water.
07:55Look, it's another little island over there.
07:58If I lack resources here, it means I've got a backup plan over there.
08:03For the time being, though, we need to find out exactly what we've got on this island.
08:08OK, come on.
08:12Scavenging is a key element to survival, and the shoreline is a great place to find materials.
08:19There's so much to survival. It's just about seeing things differently.
08:24The clamshell, great for collecting water when it rains.
08:27Take that.
08:29Look, even this sort of thing.
08:31Not sure what I can do with that.
08:34Come back for that, even if it's only for firewood.
08:39You may not need this stuff now.
08:41But it might come in use later.
08:46One man's junk is another man's treasure. It's a good haul.
08:50Now to move on and see what else this island has to offer.
08:58Look, even rock pools like this are often good places to find fresh water.
09:03Get all these, like, pockets here.
09:06And if it's rained after the tide has gone out, these will often be full of drinkable water.
09:15No, not that. That's really salty.
09:23No.
09:25Successful survival involves four basic principles.
09:29Protection, systems to assist your rescue, water and food.
09:34Your first priority is shelter.
09:37Good bit of beach there.
09:41Instinctively, that feels a nice place to make camp.
09:45Actually, look, that's going to be a great place for a signal fire.
09:49Really good 180 degree views. Try and spot any passing ships.
09:54So far, my search for fresh water has been fruitless.
09:57Looking for just signs of any seeps, trickles of rainwater.
10:02It's dry now, but if it rains, this will make a good water trap.
10:07Also, a little reef. And that's going to be my source of food.
