Newcastle man charged with terrorism offence allegedly intended to kill MP Tim Crakanthorp, court hears

New South Wales police say a 19-year-old man charged with a terrorism offence intended to kill a state MP. Jordan Patten was arrested in Newcastle yesterday afternoon. The self-described right wringer shared a manifesto detailing his anger and his thoughts on what he believed to be wrong with modern society.

00:34Jordan Patton was arrested nearby after museum staff asked him to leave and called the police.
00:41He's been charged with preparing and planning for a terrorist attack.
00:45He fronted Newcastle local court via video link this morning where the residing magistrate
00:50said there appeared to be strong overtones of mental health issues.
00:54The court heard Tim Crackenthorpe was targeted because of his status as a Labor MP.
00:59Mr Crackenthorpe has released a statement calling the situation a very serious incident
01:05while giving thanks to New South Wales Police, Newcastle Museum staff and everyone who has
01:11reached out to him at this troubling time.
01:14Police allege Mr Patton intended to kill Tim Crackenthorpe but the MP was not in his office.
01:21At the time he was half an hour away in Belmont with the Premier Chris Minns.
01:27The incident prompted Specialist Protection Police to carry out a sweep of City Hall where
01:32the Premier was due to give a speech to the Newcastle business community.
01:36Jordan Patton remains behind bars after being formally refused bail.
01:41He's due back in court in August.
