"If We Had Murder In 'Anyone But You,' I Think It Would Have Really Changed The Whole Vibe": Glen Powell On His Hit Rom-com And His New Netflix Movie

There are plenty of reasons why actor Glen Powell’s films have been shattering box office records. He’s talented, charismatic, has marvelous chest hair, and, of course, he’s an absolute smoke show. With these powers combined, it’s no surprise that the man has starred in two romantic comedies being released less than six months apart, with "Anyone But You" and "Hit Man," the latter of which will be exclusively streamable with a Netflix subscription. Is this due to the circumstances surrounding this stage in Powell’s career, is it simply coincidental, or is it a concerted effort on Powell’s part? According to the actor, it may not be fair to compare the two films at all, as they exist in entirely different universes.

I caught up with Powell to talk about "Hit Man," which he also wrote with iconic filmmaker Richard Linklater. When I compared the two films, he responded.

00:03There's going to be murder.
00:04Like we got to get it darker.
00:05We shot this before we shot this before anyone but you.
00:08Oh, yeah, that's right.
00:09Yeah. Yeah.
00:11So we actually right before.
00:12Really? Yeah. Yeah.
00:14You. Yeah, because that yeah, that was the next movie up.
00:18I think, um, no, I mean, like the the crazy part
00:22about those two movies is they really just exist
00:25in completely separate universes.
00:27Like they really couldn't be more different.
00:29And I think what you take away from those movies are very, very different.
00:33At the end of the day, like, you know, I'm obviously, you know,
00:37blessed to share the screen with with with two wonderful co-stars.
00:41I will say that that this movie in particular is is really interesting
00:46because, you know, that was a that was a Shakespeare adaptation.
00:50You know, we're taking this from Texas Monthly and a real life guy who who,
00:54you know, we were we were our entry point into
00:58this movie was very, very different because it was really
01:01taking the premise of, you know, it was a really contemplation
01:04of identity and passion.
01:05You know, there's there's a much more link later cerebral aspect to this one
01:10that that that was just it's just different.
01:13You know, it's just it's just a different beast completely.
01:15And just it just I would just say the the nature of how Rick works, you know, is is
01:22he's he's just his own beast.
01:23It's his own ecosystem and how how you bring people together and bake it up.
01:27So, again, I'm proud.
01:30I'm proud of both both movies in their in their own right.
01:32But yeah, if we had murder in anyone but you,
01:35I think it would have really changed the whole vibe.
