00:00Welcome to WatchMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the most offensive and
00:11degrading reality shows to hit TV.
00:13My name is Eden and I'm 4 years old and I'm a pageant superstar.
00:21Number 10.
00:22Are you hot?
00:23The search for America's sexiest people.
00:26Judging people based on their appearances has always been a standard of reality TV.
00:30It's the basis of several dating games including Next, an MTV show where you could
00:36instantly chop people if you thought they were ugly.
00:42However one ABC production took that concept over the edge.
00:47In Are You Hot, contestants would strut their stuff on stage in bathing suits and then let
00:52a panel of judges point out every so-called flaw.
01:07Hyper focusing on tiny imperfections only added to the already toxic beauty standard
01:12of the early 2000s and only served to upset.
01:16The use of tools like laser pointers only made the experience more degrading.
01:21We can't help but wonder if TV fame is really worth subjecting yourself to this.
01:33Number 9.
01:34Dating naked.
01:35We understand wanting to be real, but this is going way too far.
01:40VH1 created a dating show with a brand new twist.
01:44Everyone would meet each other entirely in the nude.
01:49While everything is censored, just knowing that they're making small talk while completely
01:53naked is enough to put a damper on everything.
01:57While it was an entirely new take on the dating show genre, it can also be argued that they
02:01went overboard for the sake of novelty.
02:08The concept also came across as exploitative due to the inherently uncomfortable nature
02:13of it and the capitalization of their discomfort.
02:17Even when the contenders were dressed, viewers couldn't get past the awkwardness, which
02:21eventually led to it ending.
02:28Number 8.
02:29The moment of truth.
02:30It's said that honesty is one of the most important qualities, but this is proof that
02:35the truth can hurt.
02:37On the moment of truth, players would answer a series of increasingly invasive questions
02:42with the hopes of receiving a cash prize.
02:59They hooked everyone up to lie detectors, which have been proven to be beatable and
03:04aren't admissible in several countries.
03:07Beyond the logistic errors, it was also morally dubious.
03:26The format was designed to be humiliating to not only the contestants, but their loved
03:30ones as well.
03:32Viewers were willing to go to extreme lengths, even ruining their marriages, to win.
03:43With all the drama in the first season alone, it's no wonder that it didn't get picked
03:47up for another.
03:49Number 7.
03:50Kidnation.
03:51For this show, Lord of the Flies was treated like an instruction manual.
03:55From kidnation, children ruled, with disastrous consequences.
04:02Kids were left to essentially fend for themselves in a private town.
04:06While there were adults off camera running things on set, for the most part, they were
04:10left to their own devices.
04:12From cooking to cleaning, everyone had their own responsibilities.
04:22They were thrust into situations even some adults would need help navigating, such as
04:27water pipes freezing and holding elections.
04:29The latter only served to divide them even further.
04:33While the intent was to show how hard it is to build a society from the ground up, all
04:37they ended up succeeding in was mildly emotionally scarring a group of children.
04:43Number 6.
04:56The Pickup Artist.
04:57When it comes to capitalizing off insecurities, VH1 is an equal opportunity offender.
05:02The premise was simple, men would learn how to talk to women, all while taking advice
05:06from a host named Mystery.
05:21They were all given tips on how to attract women and were put in situations where they
05:25would try to pick up random partners.
05:27They were also labeled with a flaw, such as having a slightly high-pitched voice.
05:32It was later revealed that many of the participants were just actors and never needed the help.
05:43While reality TV being less than real isn't new, it still felt deceptive due to the advice
05:49being passed off as legitimate.
05:51Needless to say, it promoted toxic behavior that has unfortunately bled into the mainstream.
06:04Number 5.
06:05Black-White.
06:06Healing race relations has been an issue in America for decades, so who better to lead
06:13the charge than TV producers and Ice Cube?
06:19The result was an extremely problematic race-bending series where two families wore makeup to portray
06:25another ethnicity.
06:26Once the swapping was done, they were sent out in public to experience what living life
06:31as another race was like.
06:32It was an oversimplified concept, as simply dressing up isn't enough to fully understand
06:38someone's lived experience.
06:51This was evident by one of the white participants using the opportunity to say slurs.
06:56Besides the obvious issues in the makeup department, the show itself depended on the
07:00furthering of racial stereotypes, which was the exact opposite of their original goal.
07:11Number 4.
07:12Boy Meets Boy.
07:14The most disappointing reality shows are the ones with wasted potential.
07:18The first all-male dating game was formatted like The Bachelor, where one man would have
07:23the opportunity to meet several potential mates and choose a partner from there.
07:30However, partway through the season, there was a sudden twist.
07:36It was revealed that some of the men were actually straight, and were competing for
07:40money too.
07:52This came as a shock to The Bachelor and the audience, who had both wanted to see genuine
07:58romance.
07:59Seeing them play into what they thought were gay stereotypes in order to win was just cruel.
08:12It's a shame, as the community would have rallied behind it had they not had the rug
08:17pulled out from underneath them.
08:19Number 3.
08:20Who's Your Daddy?
08:22This was like a deranged version of Mamma Mia.
08:24One woman who had been adopted as a child was tasked with narrowing down a large group
08:28of men to find out who her true father is.
08:37The actors have to convince her they're her family, with a cash prize if they can
08:41fool her.
08:42Needless to say, it was an uncomfortable emotional watch.
08:52It was criticized by adoptive parents across the nation, who felt that it painted the practice
08:57in a negative light.
08:58They were also criticized for the intentionally provocative title as a way to pull more viewers
09:03in.
09:04Overall, Who's Your Daddy was seen more as clickbait than a genuine attempt at reuniting
09:15a family, leading it to be swiftly shelved.
09:19Number 2.
09:20Toddlers and Tiaras We have serious questions for whoever greenlit
09:25this.
09:26Based around forcing young girls into the beauty pageant circuit, Toddlers and Tiaras
09:30has been considered one of the most harmful reality shows in recent history.
09:41From putting children in inappropriate costumes to forcing them into painful beauty routines,
09:45the parents went to extreme lengths for the sake of the crown.
09:49It put a spotlight on how abusive stage parents can be, and the things kids are put through
09:54to win a contest.
10:05The fact that the series ran for as long as it did is shocking, as most offensive productions
10:10get the boot after a season or two, not seven.
10:14Thankfully, it was cancelled in 2016, and hopefully we'll never see a repeat of it.
10:21Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few dishonorable mentions.
10:32Keeping Up With The Kardashians It's one of the most controversial shows
10:35about one of America's most contentious families.
10:46Love Island No matter what country it takes place in,
10:49Love Island is exploitative and drama-hungry.
10:57I Wanna Marry Harry Several women were convinced they had a chance
11:01at dating a faux Prince Harry.
11:1119 Kids and Counting This seemingly pure family was weighed down
11:15by dark secrets and fundamentalism.

11:39The Swan Unfortunately, one staple of 2000s reality
11:43TV was completely altering the way you looked.
11:46From preying on brides' insecurities and bridalplasty to promoting disordered eating
11:51and exercising in extreme makeover, producers were willing to go to any length to get people
11:56to permanently change themselves.
12:00However, the most egregious was The Swan.
12:06Two women were pitted against each other weekly to see who would undergo the best makeover.
12:11These were done primarily through extensive plastic surgery, with the veneer of turning
12:15ugly ducklings into swans.
12:24The very basis of the show was cruel and promoted ideas that were unreachable without going
12:29under the knife.
12:30After watching this, it's clear to see why there's been such a push for body positivity
12:35in recent years.
