00:00In an era of great all-rounders, he was perhaps the greatest, he was a charismatic and inspiring
00:15leader.
00:16He is a tireless worker for charity and a champion of the poor and underprivileged.
00:22The Lion of Pakistan, Imran Khan is one of ESPN's Legends of Cricket.
00:30Imran Khan!
00:37Imran Khan!
00:45That's up in the air, he's getting under it, this could be victory, it is!
00:48Pakistan win the World Cup.
00:50Imran Khan has won his side to victory.
00:53What a great victory.
00:55In the twilight of his career, Imran Khan led Pakistan to its greatest triumph, an improbable
01:00victory in the 1992 World Cup.
01:03When Imran was captain, there was never any question of anyone else being in charge.
01:08And I think that, probably more than anything, is what won them that World Cup down in Australia.
01:15And more than anything, it's the thing that has put him on a bit of a pedestal in terms
01:20of Pakistan cricket.
01:22Imran Khan is right up there, considered to be the number one man in Pakistan cricket.
01:30He was the only one who always would tell us in the team meeting that we are going to
01:36win it.
01:37He was there always encouraging us, even when we were losing, even when somebody was winning.
01:42You know, to keep that spirit going through when you're losing is important.
01:47And I think he led simply outstandingly well in that World Cup.
01:54He had a presence that managed to make Pakistan into world beaters.
02:00And that is the greatest thing that he ever achieved, was unity in the team that he captained.
02:17As a bowler, Imran had genuine pace and could move the old and new ball in the air.
02:28Highly talented, very skilled with the ball, and also very able with the bat.
02:34So a great all-rounder, one of the best of that time.
02:37And in test cricket he was a difficult opponent because he could bowl really quickly, very
02:41aggressively, and make some runs down the order as well.
02:48I thought he was an exceptional bowler.
02:51He was the first one who introduced reverse swing and genuine pace.
02:57If you had a pace meter on Imran Khan, he would have been up around about 87, 88 miles
03:04an hour, which for a fellow with an action of economy, it was quite good.
03:12It's gone.
03:13Very positive, very aggressive.
03:16He hated, hated to lose against any side.
03:21He wanted his team to perform like him, to behave like him, and that was to believe in
03:26their ability and believe that they can win against any side.
03:29So he was really, really tough on himself and on his team, and that's why Pakistan team
03:33has performed so well under him.
03:40Imran was a stylish, hard-hitting batsman with a sound, orthodox technique.
03:46Pulled it away.
03:47Beautiful shots.
03:48Imran Khan, I think towards the end of his career, realized that his pace was going down
03:52as a bowler, and he had to contribute more as a batsman.
03:56And towards the end of his career, he became, I think, one of the better batsmen in the
03:59world.
04:00Started batting at number three, number four.
04:07As a captain, Imran led his country with authority and vision.
04:11I think he was Pakistan's greatest captain.
04:14There's no doubt about it.
04:15His ability to motivate youngsters was quite amazing.
04:18He passed on the art.
04:20He was always talking to the likes of Wasim or Waqar.
04:23And I think the attitude, when you see the aggressive attitude and positive attitude
04:27of the young Pakistani bowlers, you've got to thank Imran Khan for that because, you
04:31know, he was instrumental there.
04:33He was always there.
04:35The first one to be there at the ground and last one to leave the ground.
04:38He was hardworking to the core.
04:40And that's what made him such a successful captain.
04:44Imran Khan was, for me, the greatest ever Pakistan captain.
04:50And he was the one who could ask or issue instructions and know that they were going
04:58to be obeyed.
04:59He's the only one I've known over the years who could do that.
05:04A wonderful cricketer as well.
05:09Drive. That's down the ground.
05:10That's knocked away by Campbell.
05:11They're going to it for the single.
05:12That's a hundred for Imran.
05:13Well played.
05:14A superb captain's knock.
05:27Imran Khan was first selected for Pakistan in 1971, aged 18.
05:33It would be another five years before he would establish himself at the highest level.
05:38He was probably picked before his time.
05:40I think he was picked purely on a great talent, but a very undisciplined talent who, when
05:47he was first selected, was really feeling his way in first class cricket, let alone
05:52being thrown into test cricket.
05:54And some of his early performances, he came across as an undisciplined cricketer.
05:59He really didn't solidify his place on the side until 1975, 1976.
06:04But in that meantime, from his test debut in 71 through there, he had studied at Oxford
06:08University and I think learnt much about life, much about himself and much about cricket
06:14in that period.
06:16In 1976-77, Imran finally made an impact on test cricket when he took four wickets in
06:22an innings and made a half century against New Zealand.
06:26In Australia, later that season, he took five wickets in the second innings of the
06:30second test.
06:31A week later, he took 12 wickets in Sydney.
06:34Probably his first great performance was in Sydney in 76-7 when he took 12 wickets.
06:39And that was the series that he sort of became an established test cricketer.
06:45And his game evolved from there.
06:49Imran Khan was a fantastic cricketer.
06:51He could lead from the front.
06:53He would never ask people to go out there to do things he couldn't do or to tell people
06:57things that were impossible.
06:59Because he knew he could do it, that means others could do it.
07:03Bat, ball, in the field.
07:05Fantastic athlete.
07:07That series that he had against the West Indies was a tough series because the West Indies
07:10had an outstanding team.
07:12But because he believed, he made Pakistan believe.
07:16After taking 25 wickets against the West Indies in the Caribbean, Imran joined World Series
07:25Cricket.
07:27In the company of the world's finest fast men, he honed his bowling skills even further.
07:34For a budding fast bowler to be in an environment that also featured opponents such as Lillie
07:43and the great West Indies fast bowlers, Roberts, Holden, Garner.
07:48And he also had the good fortune, playing for the World 11 in World Series Cricket,
07:53that he was playing with fast bowlers such as Mike Proctor.
07:57Well, I don't know whether I gave advice to Imran Khan or he gave me advice.
08:00It was really a matter of discussing the game of cricket.
08:03World Series Cricket was a huge challenge.
08:05We were quite matey.
08:06We just discussed the pros and cons of being all-rounders.
08:09I think, I must say, whatever Pakistan Cricket has done after Imran's retirement or Javed
08:15Miyadar's retirement, those two main guys showed us how to tackle the world, how to
08:21tackle the world cricket and how to beat the world cricket.
08:24And after that, we won a lot of series against a lot of sides, even their home tariffs.
08:29And I think that's the positive mark Imran left in me, in Waqar Yunus and in people like
08:35Umar Kul, people like Shoaib Akhtar, you know, all these bowlers.
08:39And that's what we picked up from him.
08:40And I think we should thank Imran Khan to give us the good foundation how to be a great fast bowler.
08:47I would say that Imran was the one that I rated very highly.
08:52A penetrative, new ball bowler.
08:55As a batsman, he could bat any sort of innings.
08:59Where he could bat high in the order and play a very subdued sort of innings.
09:02Or if necessary, take the attack to the bowler and change the course of the match.
09:06And of course, if he ordered sort of okay, and he was a captain.
09:09And he was more consistent, I believe, than the rest of us.
09:18From 1979 to 1982, Imran was clearly Pakistan's chief strike bowler.
09:24Against Sri Lanka in 1982, he took 8 for 58 and 6 for 58.
09:29Still the best match statistics in test history for a Pakistani bowler.
09:35In England in 1982, Imran Khan was a revelation.
09:39He'd been a compromised choice as Pakistani captain.
09:43But he immediately showed his leadership qualities.
09:46The Lion of Pakistan was born.
09:49What he was able to bring was to a very kind of flamboyant Pakistani team.
09:55Probably real discipline and edge to them.
09:58But allowing them to express their natural talent.
10:02Probably Pakistan have not had a captain like Imran.
10:07Since he's finished.
10:09To be able to bring, not a team of individuals, but all very different characters.
10:16And occasionally you could say that Pakistan were ill-disciplined.
10:20But he was able to bring all their talents to the table.
10:24And to get them to produce.
10:26Pakistan I think have produced a lot of great cricketers.
10:29But they have never really produced too many great teams.
10:32Because of leadership.
10:34And I think Imran Khan, the leadership that he brought to that Pakistan team.
10:38Made him in my opinion the greatest captain Pakistan perhaps ever had.
10:42But certainly the best one I ever saw.
10:45After losing the England series narrowly.
10:47Pakistan went on to beat Australia and England at home.
10:50In these two series totaling 9 test matches.
10:53Imran took an amazing 53 wickets.
10:56During the 1982-83 series against India.
11:00Imran took 40 wickets in the series.
11:02Despite struggling with what was thought to be deep seated bruising to a shin.
11:06It was later confirmed that he had a severe stress fracture.
11:10He would not bowl another ball in test cricket for 3 years.
11:14He didn't play at his peak when he was 30-31 years old.
11:18When bowlers reaches, they touches their peak of fast bowling.
11:21When you get to know as a bowler about reverse swing.
11:25When you know as a bowler how to bowl the new ball.
11:28Imran didn't play for 2 years because of his shin injury.
11:31So I think he got 366 wickets.
11:34He would have easily gone past 450 I reckon if he would have played those 2 years.
11:38But definitely one of the fastest bowlers in that particular era.
11:41That's for sure and dangerous.
11:52Season 1984-85 was a highly significant one for Imran.
12:03His mother became ill with cancer.
12:06And he took his first tentative steps back onto the cricket field.
12:10When Imran came back into the side and once he had his confidence in his leg.
12:14He was as influential and important a cricketer.
12:17As he had been before the injury.
12:20Through 1985-87 Imran was once again probably the greatest all-rounder in the game at the time.
12:27Imran played a key role in NSW 1984-85 Sheffield Shield victory.
12:33Performed well in the ensuing world championship of cricket.
12:36Then produced a superb spell of 6 for 14 from 10 overs against India.
12:41In a one day tournament in Shahjah.
12:45In 1986-87 Imran restored to the captaincy.
12:50Led Pakistan to its first ever test series win against India in India.
12:55He made 135 not out in the first test.
12:58But he decided that 1987 would be his last year in international cricket.
13:04The India Pakistan rivalry has been often compared to the ashes.
13:07But the cricket hasn't been like the ashes.
13:10Because the cost of defeat has always been greater than the rewards of victory.
13:15You know if you lost a series you almost always got sacked as captain.
13:19And the players careers finished.
13:24If you did badly in India Pakistan series.
13:27In 1987 at the oval Imran led Pakistan to an unassailable lead in the test series against England.
13:34In the last match he ensured the series victory.
13:37The first for Pakistan in England with an imperious 118.
13:42100 in what he says will be his last test match.
13:46A great performance from Imran Khan. Beautiful innings.
13:52Following his personal triumph against England.
13:55Imran led Pakistan in the 1987 world cup.
13:59But the unfancied Australians upset the Pakistanis in a semi final.
14:03And went on to win the series.
14:05Imran's career was over. Or so he thought.
14:09Javed Miandad led Pakistan to a home series win over England in 1987-88.
14:15But it seemed the whole country wanted Imran Khan to return.
14:19Javed resigned the captaincy.
14:21And Imran made his comeback for an outstanding three test series against the West Indies.
14:26Imran was persuaded as he says against his better judgement.
14:31To come back and play in that series.
14:33And the series turned out to be one of the finest series of the 1980s.
14:38Which Pakistan for a fair part of it looked as though they would prevail.
14:43But in the end the series ended with a 1-1 draw.
14:47We were the only team at the time who always came close to the West Indies to beating them.
14:51But never could.
14:52And I think we really played amazing cricket.
14:54The first test we won. The second test match we drew.
14:57And the third test match we lost.
14:59So it was a very close series.
15:01And West Indies in 1986-88 was one of the best sides in the world.
15:05It was very difficult for any team to even come closer to West India.
15:09And Pakistan team did under Imran.
15:11I think Imran Khan gave a calmness and a direction to a cricket team.
15:18And they were one team that actually matched the West Indies high and away.
15:22For test matches when he was in charge of Pakistan.
15:25Imran ended his test career with a win over Sri Lanka.
15:29And then led Pakistan to victory in the 1992 World Cup.
15:50Throughout 1992 you could see the force of Imran personality really carrying Pakistan.
15:56They had a lot of good players.
15:59But they lost three out of the five matches.
16:03And one more loss and they were out of the tournament.
16:07And I guess something snapped and something happened.
16:09And then the team turned around.
16:11And Imran started batting at number three.
16:15Scored runs there.
16:17And somehow he got the best out of all his teammates.
16:22Imran Khan in particular was a very mentally strong man again.
16:26And a great leader.
16:27When Imran Khan took ten others with him out onto the field.
16:31The ten others that went out there with him believed in him.
16:33Believed in the team that he was leading.
16:35And believed that Pakistan could achieve anything.
16:38That is the greatest thing about Imran Khan.
16:41Imran Khan has went inside to victory.
16:44What a great victory.
16:54In retirement Imran set himself the monumental task of raising the money to build a cancer hospital in Lahore.
17:01In memory of his mother.
17:03As he fought to raise funds for the hospital.
17:06Imran became a focus.
17:08A champion for Pakistan's underprivileged.
17:11By 1997 he was campaigning for political office.
17:16Every cricketer wants him to succeed.
17:18Most of the Pakistanis do want him to succeed.
17:21But it's a different ball game politics.
17:24You know he sounds very positive.
17:26And I hope that he in a political setup can make a contribution as he did in cricket.
17:32Not many people manage to become more famous after being cricketers than they were as cricketers.
17:37But Imran has managed that.
17:38He has become a strident politician in Pakistan.
17:41He was one of the most fervent opposers of the Musharraf regime.
17:46And his movement for democratic change has never quite taken off politically.
17:53But he has put him in the spotlight.
17:55Basically he is possibly the global spokesman for Pakistan politics these days.
18:00He of course married a socialite Jemima Khan.
18:03Jemima Goldsmith as was.
18:05And so for a time he was very much on the social world in London and everywhere else that social worlds occur.
18:13And also charity wise he established a cancer hospital in memory of his mother who died of cancer.
18:23Generating huge funds.
18:26I think right now Imran has been doing amazingly well in charity with his hospital.
18:33SKMT, Shaukat Khan Memorial Trust.
18:35Where poor people get free treatment.
18:39Cancer treatment which is very expensive.
18:41And for that he has to raise money all year round.
18:44Every year round.
18:45About 40 to 50 million dollars I reckon.
18:48If I'm not mistaken.
18:50And as far as in politics I think people are taking him seriously now.
18:54He speaks from the heart.
18:55And one quality I know Imran like a vouch for him that he is a very honest person.
19:00And I think honesty is a big requirement in our politics back home.
19:14Just as Imran Khan fought his way to the pinnacle of cricket success.
19:18It would be premature to write him off as a future political force.
19:22For the present though he leaves behind the record of an astonishing all round cricketer.
19:27And a leader of rare quality.
19:30Imran was definitely happier being a leader.
19:33I mean he knew his own mind.
19:35And spoke it very articulately.
19:39And I mean it's not impossible to imagine him becoming Prime Minister of Pakistan.
19:43Which he seems to aspire to.
19:46So he was a genuine leader.
19:48I think he had a tremendous effect on Pakistan cricket.
19:51Because he influenced so many of the younger bowlers coming through.
19:54I think they all looked up to him.
19:56They all respected him.
19:58It's actually a pity in a way that he's not more involved there.
20:01Or hasn't been more involved from a cricketing point of view.
20:04Throughout time since he's retired.
20:06Clearly he's had other ambitions.
20:08And he's gone into a totally different field of life and walk of life.
20:11He was I thought quite outstanding for Pakistan cricket.
20:16And not all that's happened since he's gone has been of the same quality.
20:25Imran Khan played in 88 test matches.
20:28He made 3807 runs at an average of 37.69.
20:33He made 6 centuries.
20:35He took 362 test match wickets at an average of 22.81.
20:40In 175 one day internationals he made 3709 runs at 33.41.
20:48And took 182 wickets.
20:51You are rated Imran one of the finest all round cricketers that I've ever seen.
20:56And he was a great captain.
20:58Tremendous captain.
21:00And I mean the players respected him.
21:02He held them together.
21:03He held the Pakistan team together.
21:05He's been a colossal figure off the pitch as well.
21:07Which is given how colossal he was on the pitch is a remarkable achievement.
21:11I got to play Imran in my first series.
21:13And he was a great inspiration.
21:16Just by looking at him the way he conducted himself.
21:21And so disciplined he was.
21:23It's a sign of a great great sportsman.
21:26Imran found the right guys.
21:28Gave them freedom.
21:30And told them that you just go and play.
21:33I'm there to look after everything else.
21:35People looked up to him.
21:37I was speaking to Rameez Raja a couple of months earlier.
21:42And he said he was describing Imran Khan as a leader.
21:47And he said that when he was in the dressing room we were in awe of him.
21:52People called him a bit of a dictator.
21:54But it was the kind of leadership that Pakistan needed at that point.
22:01And without him Pakistan couldn't have won the World Cup.
22:05Pakistan couldn't have been the team that they were for those 3 or 4 years.
22:11His bowling statistics place him amongst the finest of all time.
22:15And he could have secured a place in most test teams as a specialist batman.
22:20But it is his exceptional leadership qualities that elevates him beyond even the greatest of his peers.
22:27Imran Khan's all-round ability, force of character and integrity
22:32have earned him a place of honour amongst ESPN's Legends of Cricket.
22:58In an era of great all-rounders he was perhaps the greatest.
23:02He was a charismatic and inspiring leader.
23:05He is a tireless worker for charity and a champion of the poor and underprivileged.
23:11The Lion of Pakistan, Imran Khan is one of ESPN's Legends of Cricket.
23:27The Lion of Pakistan
23:45In the twilight of his career, Imran Khan led Pakistan to its greatest triumph
23:50an improbable victory in the 1992 World Cup.
23:53When Imran was captain, there was never any question of anyone else being in charge.
23:58And I think that, probably more than anything, is what won them that World Cup down in Australia.
24:05And more than anything, it's the thing that has put him on a bit of a pedestal in terms of Pakistan cricket.
24:12Imran Khan is right up there, considered to be the number one man in Pakistan cricket.
24:20He was the only one who always would tell us in the team meeting that we are going to win it.
24:27He was there always encouraging us, even when we were losing, even when somebody was winning.
24:32You know, to keep that spirit going through when you're losing is important.
24:37I think he led simply outstandingly well in that World Cup.
24:44He had a presence that managed to make Pakistan into world beaters.
24:49And that is the greatest thing that he ever achieved, was unity in the team that he captained.
24:56Danny Morrison round the wicket, digs it in short, and Imran's hammered him again.
25:06As a bowler, Imran had genuine pace and could move the old and new ball in the air.
25:14That's got to be close, he didn't offer a shot and Barnes is out.
25:17Very highly talented, very skilled with the ball and also very able with the bat.
25:23So a great all-rounder, one of the best of that time.
25:26And in test cricket he was a difficult opponent because he could bowl really quickly, very aggressively,
25:31and make some runs down the order as well.
25:38I thought he was an exceptional bowler.
25:40He was the first one who introduced reverse swing and genuine pace.
25:46If you had a pace meter on Imran Khan, he would have been up around about 87, 88 miles an hour,
25:54which for a fellow with an action of economy, it was quite good.
26:01It's gone.
26:02Very positive, very aggressive. He hated to lose against any side.
26:10He wanted his team to perform like him, to behave like him,
26:14and that was to believe in their ability and believe that they can win against any side.
26:19So he was really, really tough on himself and on his team,
26:22and that's why the Pakistan team has performed so well under him.
26:26Imran was a stylish, hard-hitting batsman with a sound, orthodox technique.
26:32Oh, pulled it away. Beautiful shot.
26:34Imran Khan, I think towards the end of his career, realised that his pace was going down as a bowler,
26:39and he had to contribute more as a batsman.
26:42And towards the end of his career, he became, I think, one of the better batsmen in the world.
26:46Started batting at number three, number four.
26:49As a captain, Imran led his country with authority and vision.
26:53I think he was Pakistan's greatest captain, there's no doubt about it.
26:56His ability to motivate youngsters was quite amazing.
27:00He passed on the art, he was always talking to the likes of Waseem or Waqar.
27:04And I think the attitude, when you see the aggressive attitude and positive attitude of the young players,
27:10I think it's a very good thing.
27:13He was always there, the first one to be there at the ground and the last one to leave the ground.
27:18He was a hard-working to the core, and that's what made him such a successful captain.
27:24Imran Khan was, for me, the greatest ever Pakistan captain.
27:30And he was the one who, I think, was the one who was the best in Pakistan.
27:35Imran Khan was, for me, the greatest ever Pakistan captain.
27:41And he was the one who could ask or issue instructions and know that they were going to be obeyed.
27:49He's the only one I've known over the years who could do that.
27:54A wonderful cricketer as well.
28:06Pakistan
28:22Imran Khan was first selected for Pakistan in 1971, aged 18.
28:27It would be another five years before he would establish himself at the highest level.
28:32He was probably picked before his time.
28:34I think he was picked purely on a great talent, but a very undisciplined talent,
28:39who, when he was first selected, was really feeling his way in first-class cricket,
28:45let alone being thrown into test cricket.
28:47And some of his early performances, he came across as an undisciplined cricketer.
28:51And he really didn't solidify his place on the side until 1975, 1976.
28:58But in that meantime, from his test debut in 1971 through there, he had studied at Oxford University.
29:03And I think learnt much about life, much about himself, and much about cricket in that period.
29:09In 1976-77, Imran finally made an impact on test cricket,
29:15when he took four wickets in an innings and made a half-century against New Zealand.
29:19In Australia, later that season, he took five wickets in the second innings of the second test.
29:25A week later, he took 12 wickets in Sydney.
29:28Probably his first great performance was in Sydney in 1976-77, when he took 12 wickets.
29:33And that was the series that he sort of became an established test cricketer.
29:39And his game evolved from there.
29:43Imran Khan was a fantastic cricketer.
29:45He could lead from the front.
29:47He would never ask people to go out there to do things he couldn't do,
29:50or to tell people things that were impossible.
29:53Because he knew he could do it, that means others could do it.
29:56Bat, ball, in the field.
29:58Fantastic athlete.
30:00That series that he had against the West Indies was a tough series,
30:03because West Indies had an outstanding team.
30:05But because he believed, he made Pakistan believe.
30:13After taking 25 wickets against the West Indies in the Caribbean,
30:17Imran joined World Series Cricket.
30:21In the company of the world's finest fast men,
30:24he honed his bowling skills even further.
30:28For a budding fast bowler,
30:31to be in an environment that also featured opponents such as Lillie,
30:36and the great West Indies fast bowlers, Roberts, Holden, Garner.
30:42And he also had the good fortune, playing for the World XI in World Series Cricket,
30:47that he was playing with fast bowlers such as Mike Proctor.
30:51I don't know whether I gave advice to Imran Khan, or he gave me advice.
30:54It was really a matter of discussing the game of cricket.
30:57World Series Cricket was a huge challenge.
30:59We were quite matey.
31:00We just discussed the pros and cons of being all-rounders.
31:03I think, I must say, whatever Pakistan Cricket has done,
31:07after Imran's retirement, or Javed Miandar's retirement,
31:10those two main guys showed us how to tackle the world,
31:15how to tackle the world cricket, and how to beat the world cricket.
31:18And after that, we won a lot of series against a lot of sides, even their home tariffs.
31:23And I think that's the positive mark Imran left in me, in Makar Younis,
31:28and in people like Umar Kul, people like Shoaib Akhtar, you know, all these bowlers.
31:33And that's what we picked up from him.
31:34And I think we should thank Imran Khan to give us the good foundation,
31:39how to be a great fast bowler.
31:41I would say that Imran was the one that I rated very highly.
31:46A penetrative, new ball bowler.
31:49As a batsman, he could bat any sort of innings.
31:53Where he could bat high in the order, and play a very subdued sort of innings,
31:56or if necessary, take the attack to the bowler and change the course of the match.
32:00And of course, if he ordered, sort of, okay, and he was a captain.
32:04And he was more consistent, I believe, than the rest of us.
32:12From 1979 to 1982, Imran was clearly Pakistan's chief strike bowler.
32:18Against Sri Lanka in 1982, he took 8 for 58 and 6 for 58.
32:23Still the best match statistics in test history for a Pakistani bowler.
32:29In England in 1982, Imran Khan was a revelation.
32:33He'd been a compromised choice as Pakistani captain,
32:37but he immediately showed his leadership qualities.
32:40The Lion of Pakistan was born.
32:43What he was able to bring was to a very kind of flamboyant Pakistani team.
32:49Probably real discipline and edge to them.
32:53But allowing them to express their natural talent.
32:56Probably Pakistan have not had a captain like Imran since he's finished.
33:04To be able to bring, not a team of individuals, but all very different characters.
33:11And occasionally you could say that Pakistan were ill-disciplined.
33:15But he was able to bring all their talents to the table and to get them to produce.
33:20Pakistan, I think, have produced a lot of great cricketers.
33:24But they have never really produced too many great teams because of leadership.
33:28And I think Imran Khan, the leadership that he brought to that Pakistan team,
33:32made him, in my opinion, the greatest captain Pakistan perhaps ever had,
33:36but certainly the best one I ever saw.
33:39After losing the England series narrowly,
33:42Pakistan went on to beat Australia and England at home.
33:45In these two series totaling nine test matches,
33:48Imran took an amazing 53 wickets.
33:51During the 1982-83 series against India,
33:55Imran took 40 wickets in the series,
33:57despite struggling with what was thought to be deep-seated bruising to a shin.
34:01It was later confirmed that he had a severe stress fracture.
34:05He would not bowl another ball in test cricket for three years.
34:09He didn't play at his peak when he was 30, 31 years old.
34:12When bowlers reach their peak of fast bowling,
34:16when you get to know as a bowler about reverse swing,
34:19when you know as a bowler how to bowl the new ball,
34:22Imran didn't play for two years because of his shin injury.
34:25So I think he got 366 wickets.
34:28He would have easily gone past 450, I reckon, if he would have played those two years.
34:32But definitely one of the fastest bowlers in that particular era,
34:35that's for sure, and dangerous.
34:59Hit it. Hit it, Imran. Here's a chance. He's allowed to hit that ball.
35:03Actually, there's interference from the bowler there.
35:06That's not on. He actually can't do that.
35:09And if Imran had wanted to, he could have had a free hit at that ball.
35:23I'm sure if Tony Grigg had been there, he would have appealed for interference
35:26because Max is playing around, but I remember in India that I hit one of those before
35:31and Keir Stackpole did in a tense situation because you can get run out of that delivery.
35:36So you might as well have a free hit if you think about it.
35:43Well, that's a short one and Lily doesn't play it very well.
35:46Hello.
35:47Giving him a little cheer and Imran giving him the big glare.
35:51So a few words and it's all on now.
35:55It's all on now for young and old between these two,
35:57and I think that might be the pattern for the rest of the series.
36:00He looks as if he's demonstrating, Craig.
36:03I think he's demonstrating against the overrate.
36:06My goodness.
36:08Well, it's back to the 1970s and sit-downs, isn't it?
36:15Oh, that's a good ball and well played by Dennis Lilley.
36:19Picked away on the left side down towards the deep middle of the boundary.
36:22They'll only get two for this.
36:27Another short one and well played by Lilley.
36:29He left that very well and he will continue to stir him up.
36:32That's the end of Imran's over.
36:34The score is 7-1, 6-1.
36:40It's a warm welcome that he received from the Melbourne crowd.
36:49Good afternoon, Imran.
36:55Quite a sickening welcome.
37:03Carl Rackerman always was going to get the extra bounce.
37:07A little bit of extra pace.
37:10The sun shining fairly brightly here at the MCG.
37:14Started off the day with very much cloud cover.
37:44Today's full force, Zadeh Tahseen.
37:52On his own ball, although he's far from it.
37:56He shouldn't be so disappointed.
37:58Yes, he's had his share of luck.
38:03He's going to have to come back and see it again.
38:06I cannot see him playing that ball.
38:21India have lost to Sri Lanka. They're 66-4.
38:36He's called back.
38:47Technically speaking, he has no authority to do that.
38:50Yes.
38:57We'll have to see what's happening.
38:59Whether he's been asked to come back by the captain.
39:05Yes, because Sri Lankan did say that he had played the ball.
39:10And he clearly expressed his pleasure.
39:17Dujon faces Maddassah Nassar.
39:22Imran Farz hits them.
39:27Very good fielding and not much in it.
39:29Dunbar Mel Johnson was there.
39:31Exactly in line with the crease.
39:37Dujon was a bit slow to go.
39:39Imran waited for the ball to come.
39:41Fired it at the stumps.
39:46Far to finish.
39:48Well, I thought that was close.
39:50And I'll tell you something.
39:51I don't think anyone went up for it.
39:53Imran Khan was the man who threw the ball.
39:57It hits the stumps.
39:59And the bowler says absolutely nothing.
40:07Producing this inaccuracy which is rather uncharacteristic of this very fine bowler.
40:17The wide head goes again.
40:19The crowd roars. That was consistency.
40:24What have I got to do, says Imran?
40:35And there's a little bit of a discussion going on out there.
40:37Imran was not happy with that call.
40:39He seemed to think that that ball was within the reach of the batsman.
40:44And it was just the fact that Haynes let it go that swayed the umpire into a judgment to rewind.
40:52There was movement there. The ball moving upward.
41:07It's up in the air. He's getting under it.
41:09This could be victory. It is.
41:11Pakistan win the World Cup.
41:13A magnificent performance in front of 87,000 people.
41:16Imran Khan has led his side to victory.
41:19What a great victory.
41:21It's been a team effort.
41:23The entire squad, the physio, the doctors, they're all out on the field now.
41:27And they're loving every moment of this.
41:29Imran Khan, his fifth World Cup, his fifth attempt to win the trophy.
41:33And he's finally done it.
41:49Imran Khan, the skipper, has decided that he's the one to come out and sort all this out.
42:07Imran just having a little flirt outside off stump there.
42:09He's missed one or two, but he's got that one away down to third man.
42:13And he'll collect three for that shot.
42:15No, he won't. He's decided that two will do.
42:19Greg Campbell again.
42:23And that's through the gap.
42:25It wasn't a chance, and it's running down to the long boundary.
42:28Mark Taylor is the fieldsman.
42:32And so three more to Imran.
42:35Carl Reckman comes into the attack.
42:38Oh, he's got him.
42:39Oh, did a carry.
42:41Boone dive forward.
42:43He dived forward. He maybe got a hand to that.
42:46Popped up. It was in the air for just a split second.
42:49Oh, appeared to carry. There's the shot.
42:53Just got his fingers under it and tried to knock it up.
42:57That's a short ball beautifully played by Imran.
42:59Well, he really got onto that one.
43:01And he's pulled that superbly.
43:03It didn't get much above chest high.
43:05And that's the way to play a pull shot.
43:08Now, those of you who want to know how to do it, have a look at this one and see if you can remember it.
43:14Back he goes, and whack!
43:16In front of square, down to the boundary.
43:19Playing this horizontal bat shot can get you thousands of runs.
43:23If you played well, you've got to practice it.
43:25And that was an example of a lovely shot from Imran Khan.
43:31It's a pity he didn't use it on you.
43:33As Imran gets that through the gully.
43:36Through for two.
43:37It's going to the long boundary.
43:39Imran going quickly back to the third.
43:41It's a long throw.
43:42And he's coming back for the fourth.
43:44Fifty for Imran Khan.
43:45Great knock by the Pakistan captain.
43:51Yes, that's a fantastic effort by Imran Khan in the circumstances.
43:56It requires a really top captain's effort here.
44:01And so far, so good for Imran.
44:06Beautifully placed.
44:07Beautifully placed.
44:08Straight through the middle between Dean Jones and Alan Border.
44:15Beautifully placed there by Imran Khan.
44:18He hasn't played a lot of attacking shots today.
44:21But when he's gone after one, he's obviously been very sure that he can put it away.
44:26I'll tell you what, he hasn't missed too many attempts to put away the half volley.
44:33Oops, the guy's dropped!
44:35Put one down.
44:36The man with the magic hands puts him down.
44:38A regulation catch.
44:42Mark Taylor at first slip.
44:44Imran on 99.
44:46Rekhman Nabowa.
44:49Oh dear, oh dear.
44:51What a let off.
44:54You won't see that too often, folks.
44:57This bloke is a wizard in the slips.
45:00But even the best of them.
45:03Put one down.
45:08Drive, that's down the ground.
45:09That's knocked away by Campbell.
45:10They're going through to the single.
45:11That's 100 for Imran.
45:12Well played.
45:13A superb captain's knock.
45:21His first 100 against Australia.
45:24Six hours and 24 minutes he's been at the crease.
45:28As opposed to allowing him to do that.
45:33It wasn't a very good ball.
45:34It was a very straightforward pull shot down to the boundary for four.
45:38That brings up the 250 for Pakistan.
45:40Five wickets down.
45:44He's got that one away.
45:45And into the gap.
45:46All the way along the ground.
45:50And a little glance down towards Merv Hughes,
45:54who hasn't wasted much time with the glare on that occasion.
46:02And that's a very good shot from Imran.
46:04He's hit it through the gap.
46:05And the ball rolling away down to that very long boundary.
46:10And into the fence she goes.
46:12So yet another four to the Pakistanis.
46:15Pakistanis.
46:20Well, the gap was left there to tempt the batsman.
46:25Imran to hit down the ground.
46:27And that's exactly what he did.
46:37And he's got him.
46:39At long last, Tanner has broken through with the slightly higher flight of delivery.
46:45And good tactics not to put the man out.
46:49They gave him the chance to hit down the ground.
46:51He did it successfully.
46:53And he was then drawn into having another go.
46:58Long effort of concentration and skillful batting by some lovely stroke play from Imran.
47:05136, his highest score in Test cricket.
47:08This was one of the best days cricket I've seen in a long time.
47:11But then we seem to be saying that in much of the times we see these two teams play in this series.
47:17Wazir-e-Azam Pakistan Imran Khan ke cricket career ke 13 behtreen lamhaat kaun kaun se hain?

50:34Agar West Indian Empires be imani na karte to Pakistan series bhi jeet jata
