00:00101 means my second family.
00:09Like every other military person, I have got three families.
00:13One is the family I was born into, one is the family which is my unit, and the third
00:18is the family of course, me.
00:23Hi, I am Colonel Vikram Iyengar, retired.
00:28I am from 8th Battalion, the Garhwal Rifles, and I am proud to have passed out from 101
00:35regular course of IMA, which is one of the best courses which has passed out from the
00:39portals of IMA.
00:42So I am what they call a Fauji brat.
00:45My father was also in the army.
00:47Naturally, Fauji was the first choice of career for me.
00:51A lot of things which I have learned from the army have been embedded by the camaraderie
00:57and the core spirit which we saw in IMA.
01:01It is not as easy as it looks, may not be as superhuman as it looks in Hrithik Roshan's
01:07movies or something like that, but it is tough when you have no sense of time, when you are
01:13made to march about 40, 50, 60 kilometers with that kind of battle load on your shoulders,
01:20maybe carrying 25 kgs plus, and your weapon, and your equipment.
01:25So it wasn't all that easy, but because we had such a great course, we had such great
01:32course mates, it was a breeze actually.
01:39What separates 101 from the others?
01:41Now every course has its heroes.
01:43We have of course got Vikram Batra, Paramveer Chakra, we have got many other course mates,
01:49Kasgaonkar, who are all, you know, known for the deeds of bravery, but I would like to
01:57give out a certain thing about our course.
02:01When we celebrated our Silver Jubilee just a year and a half back, our focus was not
02:09on just meeting up and catching up and old memories.
02:13We made it a point to include all the next of kin of all our dear departed course mates,
02:20and we are still in touch with them.
02:22We regularly interact with them.
02:25We don't have any sense that, you know, we are not part of their family.
02:29They are very much a part of our family, and I think that sets apart 101.
02:35When the Kargil War broke out, very unfortunately, I was posted in the eastern border along with
02:41China, and I remember being extremely disappointed that we may not get a chance to go to the
02:48battlefield.
02:48You are young, you are full of energy, you are full of idealism, and that's the time
02:53when you feel it the most, and you could, obviously stories used to get delayed, stories
02:59used to come out only one week.
03:01I did not even know Vikram had met his glorious end at one of the most difficult battles till
03:09almost about 10 days after the battle was done and over with.
03:13But that was the time when you felt that, I wish our formation had been there, or I
03:19wish I could just volunteer and go across.
03:24It still evokes a lot of nostalgia, that is why we are having this celebration.
03:28It still evokes a lot of nostalgia, that is why we are having this ride.
03:31The ride is not just to, you know, gloat over or celebrate just the war aspect, war is always
03:40a nasty business, but it is to remember those of our course mates and those of the Indian
03:49Army Air Force and the Navy who have laid down their lives in service of the nation.
03:56It's important that their deeds be remembered.
03:59It's important that their families are never forgotten.
04:02And it is important that we always salute the sacrifices they made.
