00:00In last week's episode we spent an amazing time in Alvor, one of our favourite anchorages
00:07anywhere.
00:08This week it's time to leave Portugal, leave Lagos and head to Spain, 130 miles and a good
00:1424 hour passage.
00:19So after checking out and having one final breakfast, we finally drop our lines and motor
00:24out into the local anchorage just to give our hull a quick scrape before we set off
00:28for our sail.
00:58So errr, what are we doing?
01:281600 reps and 4 knots.
01:32There's crap on the hull that needs to be cleaned off.
01:36I think we're probably losing about a knot.
01:57Lovely little anchorage, kind of wish we'd come out here earlier.
02:16Let's get this hull scraped because if we don't scrape it we won't be out of options
02:19for today.
02:20Well step one of our plan for today is complete, we've checked out, we have gone to anchor
02:25in the bay, the bay is about half a kilometre, half a mile from where we started off and
02:31we have got to get into the water and scrape the hull because it's been in a marina for
02:36six weeks.
02:37And we're not going to complain about the temperature of the water because this morning
02:39I saw an Instagram movie from Delos where they went diving in the Arctic Circle just
02:45in their bikinis.
02:46But they're just crazy.
02:47When I say diving I mean they jumped in, they jumped out.
02:4880 degrees Fahrenheit and they'll be rich in a minute.
02:49Do you have anything else to say on this matter?
02:51Someone has miniature legs like those of a cat, cat legs, cat legs bandolier they call
03:11them.
03:12Let's go.
03:13Okay.
03:14Goodbye.
03:15Goodbye.
03:16Goodbye.
03:17Goodbye.
03:18Goodbye.
03:19Goodbye.
03:20The sound that you can hear underneath the boat is not a dolphin it's Theresa scraping
03:29the hull.
03:31Lovely to be back at anchor and out of the marina.
03:34I love marinas and I love them for the reasons that we have shore power and we can get ashore
03:37easily, yada yada yada yada.
03:39But there is something beautiful about being at anchor.
03:42And my little mer-beast.
03:45Mer-beast.
03:46How are you my little siren of the sea, my little nautical chipmunk, my little nautical
03:57chipmunk, how are you doing?
03:59Yeah.
04:00Actually it wasn't too bad, there's like a thin layer of like moss all over the hull.
04:07My thoughts are that as we move away from the Atlantic the water is going to warm up
04:13a little bit.
04:14I hope so.
04:16We have to, over the next two months, do that two more times.
04:21Yeah, we'll have to do it again.
04:22Yeah, it's fine.
04:23But hopefully once we get to the med then it won't be, the water will get a bit warmer.
04:31Slowly warming up.
04:45Take a leap of faith, run with me.
04:59Clouds go by and the sun has set high.
05:12And I believe you when you say.
05:17It is flat calm, there is ten knots of breeze and yeah, I've made a risk assessment of at
05:25the moment, being in the cockpit is not so much of a risk.
05:28But we will have life jackets on before dusk, won't we?
05:33Be brave, we don't need far too much, just stay brave.
05:47Beside me, happy days, running on the open fields, yeah.
06:03I have to say it feels so good to be on the move again.
06:09I love the luxury or the relative luxury of being in a marina but yeah, there's nothing
06:15quite like moving to a new place, getting those sails up and you know, it's amazing
06:22because we're about to do a 120 mile run and that's obviously an overnight passage and
06:28it's not that long ago really that that would have been kind of this thing that we were
06:32planning for and psyching ourselves up for for like days if not weeks beforehand and
06:38now it's just like we've just decided to do it on a bit of a whim really.
06:41I haven't actually given it any thought whatsoever.
06:43So yes, it's lovely, beautiful day, beautiful warm day, light breeze.
06:51Yeah, looking forward to the next 24 hours of sailing.
06:55Well afternoon, we are settled in I think.
06:58We've settled into a lovely little sail and first things, someone's going to pick up,
07:04I haven't got a life jacket on.
07:05The reason I haven't got a life jacket on is because I am in the cockpit.
07:08There is seven, I mean it's seven knots of wind.
07:14It is flat calm and while it's light and there is no swirl, I'm happy to not wear a life jacket.
07:22We had a lovely lunch.
07:25It is strange enough quite cold out here.
07:27I think we've heard, Therese looked at the weather forecast.
07:31We're going to go 120 miles along the coast and I believe that Lagos in southern Portugal
07:36has a lot of kind of air and wind that gets drawn in from the Atlantic Ocean.
07:40So it's actually, it was cold when we set off.
07:42So we've got a nice overnight sail.
07:44It will be the first hopefully overnight sail.
07:46We're not completely kind of overawed by swell.
07:50Hopefully we'll get some sleep.
07:52It is one of these things which I suppose as a comparison between how we did our Atlantic crossing.
08:00This is very, very, very pleasant.
08:02We have got so much data to use and kind of figured that as soon as we get to Spain we'll lose it.
08:08So I found this kind of sailing channel that I think some of you may know about.
08:15Yeah, a couple of guys, a couple of brothers on an ammo.
08:20So I get to sit and...
08:35So yeah, that's my afternoon.
08:39I'm going to sit and catch up with Dilos.
08:41Burn up some internet data.
08:43Take some high quality Pete McKinnon style b-roll.
08:46And yeah, just settle into a long passage.
08:51Now normally, I'm saying this, what time is it now?
08:53I don't have a watch on but it's about two o'clock in the afternoon.
08:56Normally by about five the wind picks up.
08:59So...
09:01Sorry Brian, hang on a second.
09:03Normally by five o'clock the wind's picked up.
09:05We get the evening winds.
09:07So we may have to reef.
09:09We always reef down for night.
09:10It'll be a motor sail but that's it really.
09:13Just looking forward to a nice afternoon at sea.
09:44Trusting every clue I've found
09:52But the truth has not been told
09:56As every corner of these woods is hollow
10:04I can't see in the dark
10:08Well, it looks as if the sun's finally setting.
10:12We're going to start our first night watch.
10:19I'm looking forward to it really.
10:20The wind, touch wood, has remained fairly steady.
10:23About ten knots apparent.
10:25So we've got about 15, 16 knots but it's downwind all the way.
10:30It's quite warm although it's starting to chill down.
10:33I think we'll need jumpers on tonight as the sun sets.
10:36The temperature should drop quite a bit.
10:38And we are now over the 200m contour line.
10:44The reason that's important is that underneath or less than 200m
10:48you tend to get a lot of crab pots and lobster pots
10:51but not so much after 200m.
10:53So keeping an eye out for crab pots or fishing pots at night is hard.
10:59So yeah, so Therese is asleep.
11:01It's quarter past eight and I will probably
11:04She's meant to be up at nine but I think I'll just let her sleep.
11:07She stays in bed and I'll stay up as long as I can.
11:10And we'll report back at some point later.
11:12So see you later.
11:24Join us next week as we do an awesome night sail
11:27across the Bay of Cadiz to finally tie up in a beautiful...
