00:00Soon they will not even remember what it was that began the war in the first place, when
00:09the desire to kill and burn takes hold.
00:16Reason is forgotten.
00:19We cannot hide in our castle waiting for war to come to us.
00:23Good.
00:24To war then.
00:26Alicent is in King's Landing.
00:28Her son sits my throne.
00:30There has been no word from Prince Daemon.
00:34We must press what advantage we do have.
00:36And what is that?
00:37Dragons.
00:38If dragons begin fighting dragons, we invite our own destruction.
00:44It will be savage beyond all comparison.
00:58I really love this episode.
01:02We're already in a very tenuous place, but there's now been the murder of a child, and
01:06it's meant to be a harbinger for things to come.
01:14This is starting to become a pure Game of Thrones story now, where everyone's struggling
01:18with the legacy that they've been left by their parents.
01:22In episode two, any kind of stability for Aegon has now been ripped out from beneath
01:27his feet.
01:28I am the king!
01:29We always knew that Aegon was going to get rid of that Valyrian model, and it's a really
01:33powerful dramatization of how there is a new sheriff in town, and Aegon's reign as king
01:39is very different than Viserys.
01:41I declare war!
01:45The aftermath is grief like you just never, ever want to experience.
01:49Aegon feels completely alone, like no one really understands or appreciates the pain
01:54he's in.
01:55And I think we see why Aegon's respect for Helene grows, because she's the only other
02:00person in this environment that really knows what this pain is.
02:04And seeing that look in Helene's eyes when they cross on the stairs, they don't say much
02:09to each other, but they communicate through pain.
02:13I think everything's just so traumatic at that moment that for Helene, time stands still.
02:19I think the noise and everything goes under the radar for her.
02:23I think she's feeling it in the most raw and visceral way, because she's not angry over
02:28the loss of an heir, she's bereft over the loss of a child.
02:33After Blood and Cheese, Alyson is just completely devastated, and all she can think about is
02:39If she wasn't in bed with Cole, then maybe he would have been able to stop that horrendous murder.
02:44We'll know who did this soon enough.
02:47Who would do this save the bitch queen of bastards?
02:51There she sits across the bay on her rock, laughing at me.
02:54She's fucking laughing at me!
02:57Otto doesn't think Rhaenyra's capable of it.
03:00He knows she's good, and he knows that's a weakness, and hopes to use that to his advantage.
03:10We were very interested in the propaganda of it.
03:14Not only the horror of what's happened, but also the way that it's spun, and how it can
03:20be used to a political advantage.
03:22It's a way of manipulating the population with fake news, and as cruel as this society is,
03:29no one likes a dead baby.
03:30So in Otto's job, it's a weapon to employ in terms of public opinion.
03:35Otto is forever the pragmatist thinking about how to make the best of every possible situation,
03:42and it seems to me he's a character who's completely able to compartmentalize his emotions,
03:47and that makes him seem cold and calculating.
03:49But the child is dead, how can we use this to our advantage?
03:54Somebody once wisely said, never let a crisis go to waste.
03:57Otto is exploiting the moment to extract maximum political value, but it's a very effective
04:02political tool because these people that are seen by some of King's Landing as the usurper
04:07are now suddenly embraced, and that's why it's diminished Rhaenyra's position so badly.
04:12And they are accusing me of having a hand in this.
04:15I think the death of the prince is a paralyzing event in the story for Rhaenyra.
04:20It marks a reckoning with what her desire can do, her vengeful feeling, cause the death
04:25of another child, and causality suddenly starts to feel threatening, like one can set things
04:31in motion that one would never anticipate.
04:34As for Daemon, I think she has never really trusted him wholly, I think the question will
04:39become how important that actually is.
04:42Like with anything between them, it's utterly complex, and the thing with Daemon is his
04:46sense of morality, although it's perverted and mad, he thinks he's doing the right thing.
04:51Do you accept me as your queen and ruler?
04:56Emma and Matt are incredible actors, they really search for the feeling of a scene,
05:02and they find ways to really pace themselves through the scene so they're not coming in
05:08raging as might be their first instinct.
05:12Claire gave us such freedom, and something I spoke to Claire about was women's rage,
05:17and I think we saw Rhaenyra in season one keep a lid on intense feeling, and I was really
05:23excited to find out what happens when you take the lid off that.
05:26He was not afraid of you, Daemon!
05:30He could not trust you any more than I can trust you.
05:36They have a really interesting relationship, and we love writing for them.
05:40They have a connection that nobody else on the show shares.
05:44They are the same person, almost, in different bodies.
05:46The difference that Daemon was a man, and gets to do whatever he wants.
05:51Father.
05:52And Rhaenyra has to wear a dress and stay cooped up in a castle, and so feels that frustration.
05:59At the same time, Daemon was the heir to the throne, and it was taken away and given to
06:04Rhaenyra.
06:05And there's just no way that you're not angry and resentful about that.
06:09And so we wanted to delve into the fact that they have a deep connection, they have each
06:13other's back, but we're not sure where they're standing and how everything's gonna play out
06:18in the end.
06:21I don't think she realizes how bad this is for her at the moment, because so much of
06:24her claim is wrapped up in the realm's assurance that, yes, Rhaenyra will be queen, but at
06:29least she has Daemon Targaryen at her side.
06:31And now she doesn't, and she will have to reap those consequences in the episodes to come.
06:42Cole is wrapped up in his own guilt and shame, because he was in the queen's chamber when
06:47all this was going down.
06:49If you please, my lord.
06:52He's been commander for five days, and there's been the most catastrophic thing that's happened.
06:56So I think he loses it a little bit, and he feels so guilty, but he can't admit the guilt
07:01to anyone.
07:02And so he needs to externalize it and sense him on this mission that he deep down knows
07:08is a fool's errand.
07:10From the perspective of Arryk, and Arryk the very honorable, very diligent, and Arryk respects
07:15the fact that Krystan probably come from a similar background, but he's not very honorable
07:19with his oath.
07:20So there's a little bit of an underlying tension there.
07:23You will go to Dragonstone and strike down Rhaenyra in her own halls.
07:27Arryk thinks it's a terrible idea.
07:29The only things Arryk and Arryk had was duty and the love for each other, so it's putting
07:32those things together and making them choose.
07:34As you command.
07:35The Arryk and Arryk duel is a giant moment in Westerosi history, and of course Arryk
07:40infiltrates the castle successfully, uses the uniform and the helmet that makes them
07:44all look alike to his advantage.
07:50We always love that moment of these two brothers who love each other more than anything also
07:54being set to kill each other, and there's a very American Civil War brother-on-brother
07:58aspect to it.
08:00Why are they doing this?
08:01It's because these nobles have decided that they're mad at each other, and now these guys
08:05have to battle it to the death.
08:07But Elliot and Luke are phenomenal in that scene.
08:10It was a really incredible moment on set.
08:17Sir Arryk.
08:20Believe me, I had no choice.
08:23Brother!
08:24We must have done over 30 hours of rehearsals on the fight scene.
08:29We wanted to put all our energy into it, and I feel like in the midst of the aggression
08:32of it, I think it should be quite a beautiful scene.
08:34And it was super emotional as well, and hopefully we can capture that for the audience anyway,
08:38because it'd be wicked if they could get a sense of how we felt on the day.
08:42I can hardly talk about the fight between Arryk and Eric, because it's heartbreaking,
08:47but it's an incredible scene.
08:48And I know it sounds completely opposite to it, but this is a love story.
08:52This is a story about how much these brothers love each other.
08:56So what are the questions?
08:58What are they saying to each other?
09:00Why is it so hard?
09:01It's because they love each other so deeply.
09:03So for me, this was a story about brotherly love like no other.
