00:00So I saw that headline, I was quite surprised because I know James has been
00:03very supportive both of me personally and of the policy.
00:10And of course I've had a conversation with him and I've also heard the recording
00:14and it's clear what he's doing is he's putting forward a very
00:18counterintuitive statement to grab the attention of the audience.
00:20It's pretty counterintuitive to say your government's policy is crap.
00:23But if you actually listen to what he then went on to say,
00:27he was saying that the impact, the effect, is what matters.
00:33And he went on to say that the deterrent effect we've seen working in Australia,
00:38which has an analogous policy, he also said that when the first flights take off
00:43it will send a shockwave, his words, a shockwave across the channel
00:49sending a very very clear message to the people smugglers and the people
00:52putting themselves in the hands of people smugglers.
00:54So what we've seen actually is, I mean he did it clearly for dramatic effect
00:59to grab the attention of the audience.
