00:08to regulate plastic production and promote the use of biodegradable materials.
00:14This comes after a study found Malaysia ranked the highest among 109 countries for microplastic
00:20consumption and among the top 10 for its citizens inhaling the most microplastic particles.
00:27Azizan said the government should enact laws similar in effect to its no-plastic policy
00:32implemented in 2020, adding that public awareness campaigns were also important to educate people
00:38on the risk of microplastics and measures to reduce exposure.
00:43She also called for research funding to better understand the health impact of microplastics
00:49and develop effective mitigation strategies as well as improving waste management systems
00:54to reduce public pollution and enhance recycling efforts.
00:59Meanwhile, Greenpeace Malaysia public engagement campaigner Hema Mahadevan urged the government
01:04to sign the Global Plastics Treaty, which aims to tackle plastic pollution comprehensively.
01:10Hema said this includes pushing for limits on plastic production and use, transforming
01:15corporate practices to focus on refill and reuse, and holding corporate polluters accountable.
01:22Hema also said individuals and businesses could contribute to reducing Malaysia's microplastic
