00:00When Abdullah took over, at first people thought that he was a very good leader and they gave
00:08him full support. Between 2004 and 2008, it was shown that he was not capable.
00:19Long-serving former Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad has attributed the deep divisions
00:24within the Malay community to his successor's incompetence, saying its fragmentation began
00:30after he resigned from office in 2003. Mahathir said the Malay community was largely
00:36united under UMNO during his first spell as Prime Minister, which lasted 22 years.
00:43Although Abdullah, who was Prime Minister from 2003 to 2009, led Barisan Nasional to
00:48a historic landslide victory in 2004, Mahathir said the coalition lost its two-thirds majority
00:55in the Dewan Rakyat for the first time since 1969, a mere four years later.
01:02Under Abdullah's leadership, BN also lost control of five states in the 2008 general
01:07election – Penang, Kedah, Selangor, Perak and Kelantan.
01:13That was the beginning of the split in UMNO. UMNO became very weak and people were not
01:22supporting UMNO anymore. Mahathir claimed that things worsened under
01:26Najib Razak, who succeeded Abdullah as Prime Minister, with the 1MDB scandal pushing more
01:32Malays away from UMNO. The scandal led to widespread outrage and
01:37was a significant factor in BN's loss in the 2018 general election, where they were
01:42defeated by Pakatan Harapan, marking the first change of government in the country's
01:46history. Mahathir also lamented that the fragmentation
01:50of Malay political power has weakened their ability to secure a majority in general elections.
01:57At one time, the Malays were united in UMNO. All Malays are in UMNO, including the religious
02:06people, English-educated, Malay-educated, all were in UMNO. But those who left UMNO,
02:14they started forming a lot of political parties. So the Malays are now split into four or five
02:23political parties.
