Tropical Storm Alberto Makes Landfall in Mexico

At dawn on June 20, the first light revealed the extent of the storm surge from Tropical Storm Alberto that inundated Surfside Beach, Texas.

Alberto, the first named system of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, made landfall around sunrise near Tampico, Mexico, as a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of about 45 mph.

Named on Wednesday morning, June 19, Alberto tracked across the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. By daybreak on Thursday, it had moved ashore near Tampico, Mexico. The storm will continue to advance inland and gradually weaken through Friday. By mid-morning, Alberto had been downgraded to a tropical depression, moving west at 18 mph with sustained winds of 35 mph.
