00:00I've never felt so out of place in all my life.
00:02That's when I saw him for the first time.
00:06I'm Benny.
00:07I have to admit, he took my breath away.
00:10Hi, I'm Alex from NME and today I'm joined by Hollywood's newest Hellraisers.
00:14It's the star of The Bike Riders, Jodie Comer and Austin Butler.
00:18Hello.
00:19Hey, good to see you.
00:20First things first, can you each remember the first time you rode a motorbike?
00:27I very recently remembered this.
00:29It was probably four years ago in Costa Rica on a very old,
00:35yeah, not safe one that broke down.
00:39And that was my only experience.
00:41Were you riding on your own?
00:42No, I was on the back of it. Actually, someone else was riding it.
00:46I'm quite accident prone. I feel like I am anyway.
00:49I've been on a snowmobile and that didn't go so well.
00:51You crashed?
00:52Yeah.
00:53On a snowmobile?
00:54Yeah.
00:55Wow.
00:57Oh my God.
00:58Yeah, it was bad.
00:59Where was that?
01:00It was in Utah with Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
01:03No way.
01:04Yeah, we were like, oh, we'll have a day off. We'll go skiing.
01:06And they had no skis, so they were like snowmobiles.
01:08And she was so elegant through the long snow and I followed her.
01:12Were you by yourself on there?
01:13Yeah, I was by myself.
01:14So this is why I don't, you know, tend to stay awake.
01:18You're a great passenger.
01:19I am a great passenger.
01:22It's not easy and you did it well.
01:24Yeah, yeah.
01:26I'm happy to be the passenger.
01:27Do you know what I mean?
01:28That's what I enjoyed about my experience on bike riders.
01:29I was like, you know, guys taking the heavy, heavy lifting
01:32and I can sit on the back and just enjoy it.
01:36Honestly.
01:37Just to clarify, neither you or Phoebe were injured badly?
01:41No, no, we were, we were, no, she was on a different.
01:44I was fine.
01:45I was fine, thankfully.
01:46Yeah.
01:47What about you, Austin?
01:48First time?
01:49First time on a motorcycle was with my dad as a kid.
01:53He rode.
01:54So I have memories of just, you know, we lived in California
01:58at the time and we would go on these long road trips
02:00and yeah, those are my first memories.
02:04I mean, of course, Austin Butler drove motorbikes
02:06when he was a kid.
02:07He came out of the womb.
02:09I got a cool dad.
02:12Does that mean you were the best rider on the cast or?
02:15No, I, you know, I mean, because we have people, you know,
02:18Norman Reedus rides a lot.
02:20I can see that.
02:21Carl is a great rider.
02:22Toby rode very well.
02:23We had a lot of, I mean, Tom rides a lot.
02:26So yeah, I think.
02:29Everyone really threw themselves.
02:31Like you could just tell us that everyone was so excited
02:33about the prospect of it and actually doing it,
02:38you know, being like, okay, we're going to have the camera set up.
02:40There's going to be 15 of all of you on a bike.
02:43Like just that kind of thinking about executing that.
02:46I feel like everyone was like, right, we want to do it.
02:48We want to make sure we can do that.
02:51And you're on old bikes with no helmets on.
02:53So it was awesome.
02:56We had a great time.
02:57I'm not surprised to hear Tom was really into the bikes
03:00because I don't know if you saw,
03:02did you see he turned up at a medieval jousting tournament
03:05and took part in full armor?
03:07Yeah, he didn't tell you about that?
03:09No.
03:10Wait, hold on.
03:11Tell me this story.
03:12That is incredible.
03:13So about a year ago on his Instagram,
03:15he was posting some stories of him in full kind of medieval armor,
03:19just like jousting.
03:21He's never mentioned this to you?
03:22No.
03:23He actually jousted?
03:24Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:25On a horse?
03:26Yeah.
03:27What?
03:28I don't know if he was on a horse.
03:29I just saw a picture of him in the full armor.
03:30Oh my God.
03:31I can't wait to ask him about that.
03:32Is he that kind of guy on set?
03:34Jousting constantly.
03:36I mean, does he talk about his hobbies?
03:38Well, yeah.
03:39I mean, the first thing that we talked about was jujitsu, I think.
03:42And he's very good at that.
03:45So we kind of did a little bit of jujitsu together.
03:50I'm quite surprised by the medieval jousting.
03:52Yeah, I can't picture that, actually.
03:54Hopefully he hasn't invited us.
03:55I know, I feel very left out.
03:56Yeah.
03:59I'm a big fan of Chainmail.
04:02Maybe the sequel to this can be The Jousters.
04:05Maybe, yeah.
04:06Let's do it.
04:07The Jousters.
04:08I can't have those colors on in here.
04:10You'd have to kill me to get this jacket off.
04:14He won't stay down.
04:19You know who did it.
04:20It's another club.
04:21Get the guys together.
04:23Speaking about Tom Hardy,
04:25across the cast, the accents on this film are incredible.
04:29Jodie, as well, is really good.
04:31But whose vocal work were you most impressed by
04:35the first time you saw their mouth open
04:37and you heard the accent they were going for?
04:39Jodie.
04:40Jodie, for sure.
04:41Thank you, Austin.
04:42She was dead on.
04:43I'd heard the tapes of the actual Kathy
04:45and then Jeff played me a recording one day,
04:49Jeff Nichols, our director,
04:50and he played me this recording
04:52and I said, no, I've heard this before,
04:54that's Kathy.
04:55He said, no, that's actually Jodie.
04:56Dead on.
04:57Yeah, so, definitely Jodie.
04:59How long did that take?
05:01A couple of months.
05:02I started it like two months before
05:04just to try and,
05:06because there was so much text
05:08and there was so much in the audio
05:09that was really interesting
05:11and I was like, oh, I want to try and
05:12grab as much as I can.
05:13So, yeah, a couple of months before.
05:15And tell me about your reaction
05:16when you first heard Tom Hardy's accent.
05:19Did you expect him to go so hard on it?
05:21Well, I think Tom goes in,
05:22you know what I mean?
05:23And I think, I admire, like,
05:25anyone who makes a choice
05:26and has conviction in that.
05:28And there was also that element
05:29in the film of, you know,
05:30Johnny kind of watching Marlon Brando
05:32and then to see how Tom had kind of gone,
05:34okay, how can I portray this kind of influence
05:39or what this man is trying to be,
05:42you know?
05:43So, yeah.
05:44That scene's actually really good
05:45worth watching.
05:46It's the wild one, isn't it?
05:47Yeah.
05:48But another of the scenes
05:49that I really liked was
05:50when Benny first gives Kathy a ride home
05:52and then he just waits outside the house
05:54until Kathy's boyfriend just packs up
05:56and leaves because he's so intimidated.
05:58I wanted to ask, actually,
05:59because I know the film is based on the book
06:01and you mentioned the recordings.
06:02Is that in any of the material,
06:04that story,
06:05or is it for the film only?
06:08I think she does say
06:09that he parked outside
06:11and he wouldn't go.
06:13Yeah, I think it is.
06:15And then a boyfriend actually...
06:16Yeah.
06:17And he's like,
06:18I'm done.
06:19Yeah.
06:20And she's like,
06:21five weeks later I married him.
06:22Isn't that amazing?
06:23Yeah.
06:24It's like moments like that
06:25where you're like,
06:26if you didn't know
06:27it was based on,
06:28you know,
06:29some true events,
06:30you'd be like,
06:31oh, okay, whatever.
06:32Yeah, this guy's waiting outside
06:33for 24 hours or whatever.
06:34But, you know,
06:35and you're like,
06:36oh, okay.
06:38He did.
06:39Yeah.
06:40Just write that down as a note
06:41for dating.
06:42Yeah, I don't know about that.
06:43Maybe you don't take that advice.
06:45Maybe you guys don't take that dating advice.
06:47The big question I wanted to ask you...
06:49Uh-oh.
06:50Yeah, uh-oh.
06:51But I think I maybe know the answer.
06:53Is it denim or leather?
06:55Denim or leather.
06:57This is the big debate.
06:59It's a tough question.
07:00The question depends on the circumstances.
07:04That's true.
07:05Um...
07:06I wear so much denim.
07:08Like, I literally live in jeans.
07:10So, I'm gonna...
07:13Have I answered it before already?
07:15No, no, no.
07:16I just...
07:17You struck me as a denim.
07:18Yeah, I wanna say denim.
07:19Because, Austin,
07:20you could be forgiven
07:21for maybe being a bit sick of leather
07:22after Elvis.
07:23I've worn a lot of leather.
07:25He loves it.
07:26You're leather.
07:27Who are you kidding?
07:28I'm wearing leather underneath me.
07:29You go home,
07:30everything's leather.
07:31It's got leather socks on.
07:32Your duvet, your bedspread,
07:33it's all leather.
07:35Leather duvet is the only way to go.
07:37Oh, God.
07:38Yeah.
07:39But you know what?
07:40Denim is a great all-rounder.
07:42It's a classic.
07:43And save the cows.
07:45That's true, yeah.
07:46Yeah, so it's...
07:47Yeah.
07:48Hashtag.
07:49Hashtag save the cows.
07:50Okay, um...
07:51Austin, I asked you this question last time,
07:53but every interview we always ask
07:55about your go-to or favourite album.
07:58So, it's your turn.
07:59Yeah, I remember what I said last time.
08:00In Rainbows.
08:01You got a lot of love from Radiohead fans last time.
08:03Oh, really?
08:05It's the greatest.
08:06I don't know if I can do favourite album of all time.
08:08Maybe an artist instead.
08:09Yeah, I've said this a million times
08:11on every interview, but...
08:13I'm really into Cleo Sol at the minute.
08:15Yeah.
08:16I think she's incredible.
08:17And I've had her album on kind of repeat,
08:19so I would say her.
08:21Yeah.
08:22I just can't remember the album name, though.
08:24Have you managed to see her live?
08:25No.
08:26I wonder, though.
08:27I keep checking my Spotify.
08:28Yeah.
08:31It tells you when they're doing...
08:32It tells you on Spotify.
08:34When they're in your vicinity.
08:37Yeah.
08:38So, I'm waiting.
08:39I'm waiting for the dates.
08:41And Austin, have you not seen any of the Radiohead fans
08:44who've now decided you're their favourite actor
08:46because of that?
08:47No way.
08:48That's awesome.
08:49I haven't seen anything about that,
08:51but I...
08:52I mean...
08:54Yeah.
08:55You've been adopted.
08:56I've listened to more Radiohead
08:58than any artist probably ever.
09:01And obviously, you played Elvis,
09:04but I don't know.
09:05I don't know.
09:06Is there a musician you'd like to play in a biopic?
09:09I don't know.
09:10I mean, that is a huge feat, you know,
09:12and massive props and respect to Austin
09:14because he did such a beautiful work.
09:16And who knows?
09:17I don't know.
09:18But it's like, that is no joke.
09:20That is...
09:21You know, that's an undertaking.
09:23And I think to do it is massive kudos
09:26to any actor who kind of goes forth and does that.
09:29So, maybe.
09:30I don't know.
09:31You've got a great voice.
09:33You sing.
09:34A little bit of help.
09:35Yeah.
09:36No, I like singing.
09:37I get nervous.
09:38I get nervous singing.
09:39I'm not, like, a confident...
09:41Like, do you enjoy singing in front of people?
09:43No.
09:44Or did you have to...
09:45No, I didn't sing at all before.
09:46No?
09:47No.
09:48How did you get over the nerves?
09:50I was nervous the entire time.
09:52Yeah, it struck me.
09:53Yeah.
09:54It never really goes.
09:55I was nervous...
09:56Every time, I'm nervous until I'm actually doing it.
09:59You know, I'm nervous until,
10:02like, I'm on stage,
10:03and you have that first moment
10:05where you feel a connection with an audience member.
10:07I don't know.
10:08Do you feel that when you're doing a play?
10:10Like, are you nervous before you actually get out on stage?
10:13But then once you're out on stage,
10:14then it kind of, like...
10:15The energy kind of changes into something else.
10:17The energy, it has to get transferred into...
10:19It gets channeled, in a way.
10:21Yeah.
10:22Yeah, I guess that's what I feel.
10:24Thanks so much for speaking to me today.
10:26Thank you!
10:31You
