00:00I'm here with Malik outside the Frankfurt Arena ahead of England's second Euro 2024
00:05group game against Denmark here tomorrow and we've just come out of Gareth Southgate's
00:09pre-match press conference. The manager was alongside right-back Kyle Walker and he revealed
00:14that Luke Shaw will not be available for tomorrow's game. A couple of weeks ago when Southgate named
00:20his final 26-man squad he had expressed some optimism that Shaw could play a part in this
00:25match, probably from the bench, but he said although they thought he was ahead of schedule
00:30a few days ago it's now looking likely he won't be back until the end of this week or the start
00:35of next which gives him a chance I guess Malik to feature from the bench in the Slovenia game
00:40on Tuesday but it's looking more like the knockouts for Shaw now isn't it? Yeah I mean I don't know
00:43about you but I was sort of thinking ideal scenario would be maybe he came off the bench
00:48tomorrow against Denmark and then hopefully England have won the group or at least are
00:52definitely through and maybe he gets to start the final game that's obviously going to be pushed
00:56back I mean we obviously heard this morning that he wasn't training and we were sort of banding a
01:00few theories about maybe that's mind games maybe he was you know away having a separate fitness
01:05test to see if he was even ready to start tomorrow but that's not going to be the case and I suppose
01:10somewhere down the track now it looks like Gareth Southgate's going to have a decision to make about
01:13whether he's ready to give him his first start since February potentially in a knockout game
01:18major tournament I mean how big a concern would that be? Yeah it is a concern obviously they
01:22brought Shaw out here with the view of getting him up to speed for the business end of the tournament
01:28it was fairly similar with Harry Maguire in Euro 2020 but he did play the last group game he started
01:33the last group game of that tournament so he was a little bit further ahead than Shaw is now but
01:39yeah it's a problem for England having a potentially kind of half a player or a player getting up to
01:45speed when it really matters when it's crunch time but as we know and as we saw in the Serbia
01:50game Kieran Trippier is right footed he doesn't offer the same width the same thrust the same
01:56dynamism going forward down that left flank as Shaw does so England really need him back in fit
02:01it's a risk that we think is worth taking Gareth Southgate certainly thought so obviously with the
02:05big 26 man squad it's probably not likely to cost England in that sense but we'll see how we go and
02:10if you go over to standard sport you'll be able to find more of Gareth Southgate's
02:14thoughts on those of Kyle Walker building up to the big one tomorrow here when England meet Denmark
