00:00Hi, my friends of People VIP, I'm Karla Montalban and today I'm here with Jessica Alba, who
00:09is promoting her new movie, Trigger Warning, which comes out on Netflix on June 21.
00:30Yeah, I mean, I would say that the script prior to me joining and, um, and Molly and
00:55the director, um, and us wanting to really kind of mold and shape this character into
01:01a woman that we all could like look up to or relate to, or, um, can fantasize that we
01:09are.
01:10Um, she's, you know, very feminine, um, very relatable, very grounded.
01:16Um, you know, she, she's very human and she like, you can see her grieving, but she's
01:22also like sassy and quick witted.
01:26And um, and when she's walking around, you're never like, oh, that's weird or that doesn't
01:32make any sense.
01:33We wanted to like try and take out as much of those moments.
01:37Like you don't see her in a tight leather dress and stilettos, you know, um, taking
01:43out the bad guys.
01:45You see her in cowboy boots and, you know, wearing vintage and things that maybe, uh,
01:51were passed down from her ancestors.
01:54And I think we, we both wanted this to feel like very, very grounded and as, as kind of
02:00realistic as possible.
02:02Um, and her being sort of like this, uh, this like little light inside of this, um, town
02:10that really needed her, you know, because she is fighting this corruption of this town
02:15and, uh, and they never saw her coming, you know?
02:19Yeah.
02:20And I mean, she knows her way around the knife for sure.
02:23Those actions were great.
02:25And she's on a quest for truth and driven by love rather than your typical revenge-driven
02:30heroine.
02:31How did you approach developing this character to ensure she embodied these qualities and
02:36stands out as strong and relatable rather than just another super heroine?
02:41Yeah.
02:42I mean, I, all of those things were the things that I, that I fought for, for the script
02:48and for the character.
02:49All of those nuances and bringing as much humanity to the character was, was really
02:55important to me.
02:56Because then I feel like once, once you're invested in her and you feel a connection
03:00to her, then anything can kind of happen from there.
03:04And uh, the producers had done, uh, John Wick and, uh, Sicario, so they knew how to do these
03:10like elevated action movies, but I was like, what is one where that we can really kind
03:16of, a lane we can own and, and doing sort of like a throwback, having that kind of Western
03:22vibe, uh, is something that we really wanted to bring forward.
03:26Yeah.
03:27That's amazing.
03:28And your new production company focuses on creating elevated and culturally diverse storytelling.
03:33How do you envision this company shaping the landscape of film, television, and particularly
03:38for female driven and Latino inspired stories?
03:41Well, I think this is the big opportunity and white space, frankly, for Hollywood is
03:47more female driven and more Latino representation.
03:52You know, we see, um, and consume more entertainment than any other group of people, yet we're
03:58still only under 5% represented in front of the camera or behind.
04:04And it's just, um, again, it's, it's a huge opportunity.
04:07So I hope to try and be, uh, at my production company, that sort of bridge to, to bring
04:14more of these stories to life, um, that are very commercial, very mainstream, um, and
04:19to represent our community in a way that feels right to us rather than how we have, um, historically
04:26been represented.
04:27It feels like there's a lot of opportunity, a lot more to go.
