00:00The M3 Grant was a medium tank developed by the United States in 1941-1942 as a stopgap
00:06measure to supply the British Army with a better armored and armed tank than the ones
00:10they had at the time.
00:11The M3 Grant was based on the M3 Lee, which had a 75mm gun mounted in a side sponson and
00:17a 37mm gun in a small turret.
00:20The British requested a different turret design with a radio set and a better gun mantlet.
00:24They also gave it the name Grant after the American Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant,
00:29while the original turret version was called Lee after his confederate opponent Robert
00:32E. Lee.
00:33The M3 Grant first saw combat in North Africa in 1942, where it proved superior to the German
00:39Panzer III and IV tanks.
00:41It was also used in Burma against the Japanese.
00:44The M3 Grant was gradually replaced by the M4 Sherman later in the war.
