Chloe Steele, a University of Central Arkansas student, flies home to New York to surprise her father, Rayford Steele, a pilot, for his birthday. But her plans are thwarted when her mother, Irene, informs her that Rayford can't make it. At the airport, Chloe meets investigative reporter Cameron "Buck" Williams.

Rayford arrives on his way to a flight and apologizes to Chloe for missing her birthday, claiming he was called in last minute to pilot a flight to London. He reassures Chloe that everything is fine with her mother, who has become a devout Christian, much to Chloe's annoyance. However, Chloe suspects otherwise, noticing Rayford's flirtations with flight attendant Hattie Durham and the absence of his wedding ring. Her suspicions are confirmed when an airport worker hands her concert tickets to London, revealing Rayford's premeditated plans.

Brushing off another of her mother’s sermons, Chloe takes her brother to the mall. As she hugs him, he suddenly vanishes, leaving only his clothes behind. Chaos ensues as many others at the mall also disappear, triggering widespread panic and looting. A driverless car crashes through the mall windows, and a pilotless plane plummets into the parking lot. News reports confirm the phenomenon is global, with children and some adults disappearing without a trace.

On Rayford's flight, the same mysterious event occurs—several people, including his co-pilot, a flight attendant, and all the children on board, vanish. Passengers panic, demanding answers. Rayford struggles to maintain calm, lacking information until he finally learns that the disappearances are worldwide. A pilotless jet collides with Rayford's plane, damaging the fuel line, forcing him to attempt an emergency return to New York.

On the ground, Chloe hears her father's mayday call and assumes his plane has crashed. She discovers her mother’s jewelry in the running shower—evidence that Irene has also disappeared. Desperate for answers, Chloe heads to her mother's church, where Pastor Bruce Barnes explains that God has taken believers to heaven, leaving the rest to face the end times. The pastor admits he wasn’t taken because he didn’t truly believe in what he preached. Rayford comes to a similar realization after finding religious items among his co-pilot and stewardess' belongings. He confides in Hattie about his wife's faith, convincing her to help maintain order among the passengers.

Chloe, devastated, climbs a bridge intending to commit suicide but receives a call from Buck, who is in the cockpit with Rayford. Rayford explains that all New York-area airports are closed, the streets are packed, and he is dangerously low on fuel. Determined to help, Chloe finds an abandoned truck to clear a road under construction, creating a makeshift runway. Using her compass app, she provides Rayford with the coordinates. He manages a rough landing, saving the passengers, who disembark to witness a world in flames.
