00:00Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, joining the EVM debate once again, has voiced serious
00:22concerns about the transparency and accountability of India's electronic voting machines, i.e.
00:28EVMs, referring to them as a black box and citing a recent controversy involving the
00:34Mumbai North West Lok Sabha seat.
00:38In a post on social media platform X, Gandhi emphasised the need for scrutiny and transparency
00:44in the electoral process.
00:45EVMs in India are a black box, and nobody is allowed to scrutinise them.
00:51Serious concerns are being raised about transparency in our electoral process, he wrote.
00:56These comments came in the wake of a news report highlighting suspicious activities
01:00related to the recent election results in Mumbai North West.
01:04The report revealed that Mangesh Pandilkar, brother-in-law of Ravinder Vaikar, who narrowly
01:09won the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha seat by 48 votes, has been booked for allegedly using
01:14a mobile phone at the counting centre on June 4.
01:18Pandilkar allegedly used the phone to generate the OTP required to unlock the EVM machine
01:22at the Nesco centre.
01:25The police have sent the phone for forensic examination to determine if it was used for
01:29any other unauthorised purposes.
01:32Shiv Sena UBT MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also took to X, calling the incident a fraud at
01:37the highest level, and criticised the Election Commission of India for not taking immediate
01:41action.
01:42If ECI doesn't step in, this will be the biggest election result scam after the Chandigarh
01:47mayor election, and we'll see this battle in the courts.
01:50This brazenness has to be punished, she stated.
01:53Aditya Thackeray, another Sena UBT leader, added to the criticism by accusing the ECI
01:58of withholding CCTV footage of the counting centre to avoid scrutiny, referring to the
02:03commission as entirely compromised.
02:05The debate over the integrity of EVMs was further fuelled by tech billionaire Elon Musk's
02:09recent comments.
02:11Musk questioned the security of electronic voting machines, suggesting their elimination
02:15due to the risk of hacking.
02:18The risk of being hacked by humans or AI, while small, is still too high, Musk posted
02:23on X.
02:24In response, BJP leader and former union minister Rajiv Chandra Shekhar defended the security
02:28of Indian EVMs, asserting that they are custom-designed to be secure and isolated from any network,
02:34making hacking impossible.
02:36Indian EVMs are custom-designed, secure and isolated from any network or media.
02:40No connectivity, no Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, internet.
02:43There is no way in.
02:44Factory-programmed controllers that cannot be reprogrammed, Chandra Shekhar argued.
02:48He even offered Musk a tutorial on designing secure electronic voting machines.
02:52Musk, however, remained unconvinced, reiterating his stance that anything can be hacked.
02:58As the controversy over EVMs' security and election transparency continues, the Indian
03:02political landscape faces growing demands for accountability and reform to ensure the
03:06integrity of its democratic processes.
