00:00Hello, everyone. You're watching Pitch Battle. I'm your host, Indranil.
00:07Today, of course, India playing against Canada in Florida. Pakistan are out of the tournament.
00:13That sort of excitement is not there, as if. You know, we are not feeling that punch.
00:21Because India also played only one big game in their league stages before they hop onto that Super 8 stage.
00:28Where they will take on the big teams. But this particular phase wasn't as exciting except the India-Pakistan game.
00:36And now that Pakistan is out, how will it look like, the tournament?
00:40We are joined by Avinash, who is the editor of MyKhale. Avinash, I'm a little worried about the excitement
00:47generally a T20 World Cup would generate after seeing Pakistan being knocked out of the league phase.
00:55I mean, knocked out of the tournament. And how do you see that shaping up the entire…
01:00Because, you know, we always had that feeling, after meeting Pakistan, we want one more India-Pakistan game in the knockout stages.
01:07Or something like that. But it's not been happening so often.
01:10You remember last year when we were playing the Asia Cup, we had that prospect of playing Pakistan on multiple times.
01:19There was so much excitement for India final. What are your thoughts on Pakistan getting knocked out and India and US qualifying?
01:31How do you see that enthusiasm part of it, of the tournament?
01:33Certainly, it is a temperance. Because a team like Pakistan, the former champions and a vitriolic side, which commands a lot of respect in the cricketing corridors.
01:46Because of the quality of players they have in their line-up. So, definitely.
01:54And even the fact that we saw the crowd turn out for the India-Pakistan match and also in the subsequent Pakistan games.
02:03We saw a number of people coming in good size to watch Pakistan and cheer for them.
02:10So, a big team getting knocked out in the first stage will be a dampener, not just for the fans.
02:19In fact, the advertisers and the ICC will also face a little bit of this early exit of a team like Pakistan.
02:26But we can say that they are solely responsible for their fate.
02:34They didn't play good cricket in the first match against USA. They ended up on the losing side.
02:41And then, the match against India, once again, they did something similar.
02:46They let the game in their hands and found themselves in a catch-22 situation.
02:51And their fate hung in the balance on the result of the opponents.
02:58And USA were lucky. But they played some very good cricket. Let's not forget that.
03:04They deserve to be in the Super 8 stage because of the quality of cricket they played.
03:10We saw the other day against India as well. They were fighting till the very end.
03:15And had it been a little higher total for India to chase, who knows?
03:21The outcome could have been in favour of the US team.
03:24So, overall, it's good for the game.
03:29I just saw a video of Basim Akram on ICC saying that the globalisation of cricket is one of the perfect examples for the globalisation of cricket.
03:40So, all that culminates into, what we can say, the popularity of the sport will just increase.
03:50Because of a team like the US, playing with the best in the world and competing in the Super 8 stages.
03:58And who knows, if they do well and we see what Kenya did in the 2003 World Cup, it's going to be one of the fairytale finishes.
04:10Well, we will wait and watch for that. But as of now, what I can tell you, globalisation means new players coming.
04:19But that doesn't mean that big teams would start losing, Avinash.
04:22That's not the way. Because then the basic foundation on which we are all standing will be shaken, isn't it?
04:32If big teams would start losing.
04:36Definitely, it happens. But we see, this is the format where we see even the newcomers like USA, Canada, Nepal might get a chance.
04:53The longer the format, the possibility of a stronger team ending up on the winning side.
04:58We saw just early in the morning today, what happened between South Africa and Nepal.
05:03They gave a good fight to South Africa. I mean, everybody is talking about South Africa being one of the favourites.
05:10But the win margin for South Africa is where one runs. I mean, the game could have turned any sides.
05:18So, all this is, I think, it's a good exhibition for the sport.
05:22And whether it will draw a crowd or not, it's a debatable thing. But I think it is good for the game.
05:31If a winnow is stunning, pulling off an upset and taking the game to a wider audience.
05:41I mean, of course. How many times have you seen New Zealand losing out like the way they have lost in this T20 World Cup?
05:49It's never happened. They are always in the last four, whatever they do throughout the year.
05:54But you know, that is also there. Every year, we have an ICC event.
05:59And this is probably just to counter the IPL, which is such a popular format and such a popular tournament in the world.
06:07It's the first Indian global brand, you can say, which has made such a big mark.
06:15But having an ICC event every year… I mean, last year, we had the World Cup 50 over.
06:20Previous to that, we had the T20. Last year, we also had the Test Championship.
06:26This year, we have a World Cup. Next year, we have a Champions Trophy.
06:29So, every year, we have a champion ICC event coming up.
06:33I mean, to sort of tell us who is the real champion in whichever format.
06:38But that is also… Do you think it's diluting the essence of having a four-year long wait?
06:45You know, I mean, you should allow that championship title to sink in also, right?
06:50Look at the way England are struggling a little bit.
06:54Yes.
06:55That is also a problem. That is also a talking point.
06:58Yes, exactly. And we see… I mean, because ICC wants to have a tournament every…
07:08I mean, it started with the concept of having a tournament every alternate year.
07:14And now, we are seeing one ICC tournament being hosted in a space of 7-8 months after the other.
07:23So, actually, it does dilute because the feeling of being the champion side of a format
07:30is actually not sinking within the fans and one particular team as well.
07:34Like you mentioned about the English and the Aussie teams,
07:39Australia became the Test Champions in the month of June.
07:42And they became the World Champions in ODI in the month of November.
07:45Hardly any time for fans to just soak in.
07:50And I mean, the discourse wasn't also much talked about.
07:57And even the debates were not that…
08:00I mean, the debate of being the champion and let's enjoy and cherish the victory of a championship
08:10for a longer period of time.
08:12And then back-to-back win every 6 months or 7 months.
08:15If it happens, definitely, fans would lose their interest.
08:21Euro has started and we see what happens with football.
08:24Football, big tournaments happen every 4 years.
08:29We saw the FIFA World Cup happening in 2022.
08:32And now, a major tournament is happening after a gap of 2 years at least.
08:37So, definitely, the fans, the excitement is there.
08:42And they would have a lot of things to talk about.
08:46So, sinking in, feeling also is much better over there.
08:53There are a lot of leagues happening.
08:54The UEFA Champions League is there and everything else is there.
08:58But it is all a franchise-based tournament.
09:01And it has nothing to do with the nationalities
09:04and the countries fighting for the coveted trophy.
09:07So, I think, going forward, ICC will definitely have to look on its roster.
09:14Otherwise, I am sorry to interrupt you.
09:18Otherwise, it's looking like ICC is competing with IPL.
09:21It's looking like that every year.
09:23True, true.
09:25Not just the IPL.
09:28There are so many leagues happening across the globe now.
09:31And at one point in time, even the fans would want to have a little bit of a breather.
09:40I mean, we just hope that a saturation point doesn't come.
09:47And people would stop watching the sport and following the sport.
09:51Because we are playing it a lot.
09:53And overdose.
09:54Yes, a lot is being talked about the overdose.
09:57In fact, we already see the debate and discourse happening across the globe.
10:03Whether the players are fatigued because of the IPL.
10:06They were in action for almost two and a half months.
10:10And then back once again within a space of a week,
10:14they are again in action and playing the T20 World Cup.
10:17So, there wasn't much breather for them per se.
10:20So, I mean, people are talking a lot about all these stuff.
10:28And it's not just the fans, the cricketers.
10:31Even the fans would want at least a breather or a reprieve of a month's time
10:35to just refresh themselves and then get back to another tournament or maybe another format.
10:44If you look at the international calendar, the football.
10:48They give at least a couple of months' time for the fans to just settle down.
10:56True, true.
10:56But you know, what we call it in economics, law of diminishing return.
11:02If you overfeed someone, don't kill the golden goose.
11:06I mean, that's what fans would request.
11:09Because I know it's a new market.
11:12And this market is not new in a way that cricket has already been played by those
11:18guys who are settled there in the US.
11:20They are already playing.
11:21It's not that you are getting the…
11:23I mean, not the original…
11:27I mean, the guys have been there and won and brought up in the US.
11:30I mean, if you can get those guys to play cricket, that's where the achievement will be counted.
11:36Not some, you know, fringe players going from different countries like India and going and
11:44making a team and they are playing and they are calling themselves the US cricket team.
11:48So, that's something that's not fitting the bill.
11:54But whatever.
11:54I mean, we have to make the most of it.
11:56But I think Pakistan moving out of the tournament has really affected…
12:00It's going to affect.
12:01Because Pakistan brings in whatever excitement India-Pakistan gave.
12:05The possibility of it happening.
12:08It could happen at some stage.
12:10That keeps the fans on the toes.
12:11And whatever you say, mother of all battles, India-Pakistan.
12:15It doesn't happen that way.
12:16But ICC is also utilising that to their advantage by ensuring there is an India-Pakistan match every year.
12:25You know?
12:25Yeah.
12:26So what?
12:27We are not playing global…
12:29Global, I mean, bilateral series.
12:31Globally, we are meeting somewhere.
12:34Yeah.
12:36And actually, this is a well-thought strategy from the ICC.
12:40They have tried to ensure that at least once in every ICC tournament.
12:46And now that it's happening every year.
12:49They are playing.
12:50And good, bad…
12:52I mean, it's a different thought altogether.
12:56I mean, there are the purists who believe the best match would be the best…
13:03Which team is better in terms of cricket, the quality and the entire…
13:13I mean, who is superior against the other.
13:17But yes.
13:18And ICC is planning and by putting India and Pakistan in the same group in every tournament.
13:27It ensures that these two teams might end up playing against each other in the semi-finals or the knockouts.
13:33So, and it has been giving them…
13:36Yielding them results.
13:37We saw what happened in the Champions Trophy 2017.
13:42They played against each other.
13:43And then they, once again, locked on to the finals.
13:47So, yes.
13:48It's a well-thought-out plan.
13:51I just hope that fans are not bored watching it.
13:54Because we've seen this mocha-mocha ads.
13:57I mean, being mellowed down.
13:59And now people are not giving much heat to these kind of…
14:04I mean, cliched advertisements.
14:08I think the audience is getting matured enough to not buy or subscribe to such theatrics of the
14:15broadcasters as well.
14:17And slowly, when the broadcasters…
14:20I mean, it's directly proportional to if the broadcasters will start facing the heat
14:26or the numbers will plummet.
14:29Then definitely, ICC will also have to think about and they will re-strategize.
14:33But ideally, they should last a week.
14:38No, sorry.
14:39I am sorry to interrupt you.
14:40I mean, I have got this bad habit of interrupting.
14:43Something comes to my mind.
14:44Because I am aging also.
14:46I tend to forget what I was thinking a few seconds later.
14:50I mean, you have to give it to me.
14:52And this bad, ill-mannered people are all over the place.
14:56I am one of them, probably.
14:57Interrupting someone in the middle of a conversation.
15:00But that is also there.
15:02When we think about India-Pakistan match, it's been off-late.
15:06It's been quite one-sided.
15:07And in a way, not only the way the game is played, it's going in India's favour.
15:12It's 7-1 right now in T20.
15:15The only match we lost was against Pakistan 2021, where Pakistan beat us by 10 wickets.
15:22And our world went upside down after losing to Pakistan.
15:27More than losing the World Cup, I think the sentiments are similar in either side of the
15:34border.
15:34Because they think that's the match.
15:37And our World Cup is over when we have won it or lost it, whatever.
15:41But Pakistan would be really disappointed.
15:43Because ultimately, it's not the loss against India.
15:47They had to take that into factor.
15:50They will lose to India.
15:52But I thought they didn't factor in that they could lose to the US.
15:56Because cricket is a very funny game.
15:58In one moment, you see Virat Kohli.
16:00I am talking about Virat Kohli.
16:01Coming straight to that point.
16:02Virat Kohli, last chance for him to revive some form before hitting the Super 8 stages.
16:09But Virat Kohli, the way he fought with Gavaskar.
16:12The way Gavaskar fought with him.
16:15Sunil Gavaskar is actually smiling in some corner in the US.
16:19Seeing the way Virat Kohli is struggling at the top of the order.
16:21Your thoughts on that?
16:25Dada, it happens.
16:27We have seen the clash of ideologies, clash of eras quite often nowadays amongst players.
16:35And the Aswale players.
16:36So, the active ones and the Aswales.
16:39But it's very crucial for Virat Kohli to get his form back.
16:44We know he is a big player.
16:46But he will have to get some runs under his belt.
16:50So that when there is a crunch match happening.
16:53I mean, there could be matches where he is in dire need of his experience and class.
17:00And temperament in the Super 8 stages.
17:03And going forward with the semi-finals.
17:06Because the kind of group that we are going to be faced in.
17:12I think the biggest challenge that comes across India's ways is Australia.
17:18And if they manage to beat Australia.
17:22The former champions of the 2021 World Cup.
17:26Then it will again be a big morale for the Indian side.
17:31And the route where semi-finals gets easier.
17:37Because the opponents post-Australia are the ones whom India have beaten quite convincingly
17:44in the T20 World Cup as well.
17:46And even on the international stages.
17:49So, I think it's going to be important for India to maintain a better momentum against Australia.
17:56And if they end up winning the match against Australia.
17:58Then it will be easier for them to prevail over the remaining opponents in their group
18:04in Super 8 stages.
18:06And remember, last time we met Australia in a World Cup was the high-octane final.
18:12High-stakes final.
18:14Where India just fizzled out as a batting unit.
18:17So, the memories of November the 19th would be there in the minds of the Indian players.
18:25When they will come out against the Aussies.
18:29But yes, and when you are playing against a big team like Australia.
18:34And Virat Kohli, he is a champion player.
18:38And someone who is always fed-off on the energy of the opponents.
18:42Especially against the Australians.
18:43He will have to play a good role, Team India.
18:49True. Virat will have to play a good role.
18:52And he is a very important player for India.
18:55The fact that he has been taken in with certain purpose to fulfil.
19:00The way Virat has been playing.
19:03You have to thank the cricket God.
19:05Lucky stars that every time you score.
19:07So, be thankful.
19:08Because batting is so tough, let me tell you.
19:11One mistake, you are back in the pavilion.
19:13So, as long as runs are coming, be grateful to the surrounding.
19:15Don't fight with anyone.
19:17Be calm, be quiet.
19:19Probably, Virat Kohli, that wears Delhi culture is sort of rubbed onto him so well.
19:27That's been his foundation.
19:29That's what Virat Kohli is made of.
19:31He can really take the fight to the opposition.
19:34He is someone you can't mess around.
19:36Nauseas are scared of him.
19:37And he is right there.
19:38But I can also see…
19:42I remember long time ago, in fact, I met Steve Waugh in one of the media offices.
19:47And we were talking.
19:48And he said that how the dominance of Australia is going to go down because of too much of
19:54cricket happening in the world.
19:56And now, I can see the re-emergence of Australia as a superpower in cricket.
20:02The way they played the 50-over World Cup.
20:04The way they played the Test cricket World Cup.
20:06They won the 21 T20 World Cup.
20:10They are really becoming a force to reckon with in world cricket once again, in all formats.
20:14Because we have been seeing champions in different formats.
20:17In England or New Zealand or T20 was Australia.
20:22England, West Indies.
20:25But now, we have seen Australia really consolidating their superior style of cricket.
20:38I mean, the way they have played cricket over the years.
20:40You have seen their performance across three World Cups.
20:43From 1999 onwards to 2007.
20:46That phase I am talking about.
20:47Australia were all-conquering.
20:49Only time they struggled was coming home.
20:52Coming to India and struggling against the Indian team in Test match series.
20:57Otherwise, Australia is really a dominant force.
20:59I mean, two teams we can easily count.
21:01In the 80s, 70s was the West Indies.
21:04And now, we can see the Australians.
21:06And coming back, going back to that all-format supremacy.
21:10Are your thoughts on that?
21:13Well, a lot is being talked about Indian domestic circuit, Dada.
21:17We have seen people getting fascinated by the Indian domestic circuit.
21:22Ever since Rudravid became the NCA head.
21:26And we saw a lot of exchange of ideas.
21:31Coaches from different parts of the world coming to India.
21:34Learning.
21:36Also, post-emergence of IPL, the success story of IPL.
21:42Sort of just propelled Indian domestic circuit.
21:47And the richness of Indian domestic circuit as well.
21:51So, it's come down to this.
21:53That India taking on Canada.
21:56The last match of the league phase.
21:58And are we expecting some changes in the playing 11?
22:02Probably, Kuldeep could come in and sort of get some sort of match practice.
22:06Because he will come into action in the West Indies.
22:09Where the wickets are going to be same.
22:11Only difference is, the spinners will get some assistance there.
22:15Like the pacers are getting in America.
22:18So, how is it going to be looking, the Indian playing 11?
22:21Probably, in place of Sriraj, you never know.
22:23But what happens is, generally, we have seen time and again.
22:27When we are playing a workout game, we don't make those topic changes.
22:31This is a great thing about Team India.
22:32And hopefully, they will continue to rule the roost and keep winning.
22:36And don't press that panic button.
22:38That's important.
