00:00How are you sir?
00:04How are you?
00:07Papa always tells me one thing which I really like.
00:11He says that you don't just arrive, you announce your arrival.
00:15He never brings his experience or ego to a set.
00:19I sort of didn't use that as my first card.
00:22Me and Supriya both never had to call up any producer or director at all.
00:30How lovely to see father and daughter.
00:38Father's day is just around the corner.
00:40Absolutely.
00:41Thank you for having us.
00:43Pleasure.
00:44So tell me, you I believe came into films with dad directing you, launching you.
00:50Well, honestly it's a very interesting story because I had no sort of childhood acting aspirations.
00:58And we were not aware of her wanting to be an actor.
01:03Which I didn't.
01:04Which she didn't. That is why we didn't know.
01:06I mean she was not keeping anything from us.
01:08And it was I think when I started sort of exploring theatre and doing a lot of Kathak,
01:15when you know sort of the Abhinaya aspect as a performer is something I connected to.
01:20So he saw me on stage as an adult for the first time.
01:24And when he saw my performance he really liked it and I remember him coming to me
01:29and he said that you know I've launched a lot of people in my career.
01:34And there's a beautiful script I'm working on which coincidentally happened to be a father-daughter story.
01:39And he said I'd love for you to read it.
01:41And only if you like the story.
01:43I did not say that I would love you to read it.
01:46Then?
01:47I said I would want you to act in it.
01:50No but that's what I mean.
01:51No it was she who said that I will.
01:54First give me the script.
01:56I will read it.
01:57I will read it and then I will.
01:58I mean my daughter.
02:00So of course I mean it was not a surprise for me.
02:03Perfectionist.
02:04So I mean for me but I assume that's what he meant.
02:08Like he would not take it for granted.
02:10So I wanted to read it and I thought it would be such a wonderful learning experience
02:16you know to do my first film sort of under his guidance.
02:20And I was aware that people might think you know so predictable or whatever it is.
02:26But somehow I was very sure that the intention with which I was approaching this
02:33didn't come from any entitled space.
02:35Okay.
02:36Well I'll tell you one thing.
02:37Why we did not think, me and Supriya.
02:40But you have directed her as Bittu no?
02:42In two men.
02:43That was for fun's sake.
02:44She had come in as a little boy.
02:45For fun's sake that was.
02:47I mean I wanted her to do it.
02:49Supriya didn't want.
02:50Okay.
02:51Not at all.
02:52Because she was a very studious girl.
02:54And at that time we did not think about her as an actor because she was a competitive swimmer.
03:01Right.
03:02Yeah.
03:03And she represented Maharashtra state under seven and won the gold medal.
03:08Okay.
03:09So we were probably thinking that she would go that way.
03:12That's why probably it did not struck us.
03:15Right.
03:16But when I saw her as an actor I was very impressed.
03:23I, Bharti.
03:26On stage.
03:27On stage.
03:28Of course on stage.
03:29It was in town when we.
03:31NCPA.
03:32NCPA.
03:33Me and Supriya both were invited by her.
03:35So we saw that.
03:37I saw that.
03:38And you know me since donkey's years now Bharti.
03:41I am not here to promote my daughter or my child or my son or.
03:45Right.
03:46I am not made that way.
03:48I have introduced or launched so many talented people.
03:52Boys, girls, writers, actors, music directors, singers.
03:59You know what I mean.
04:00Yes.
04:01Only because I saw something in them.
04:02Right.
04:03Similarly I saw something in her.
04:06I mean she happens to be my daughter.
04:08It's a different thing all together.
04:09Yes.
04:10Sole pe suhaga.
04:11Right.
04:12But I liked her as an actor.
04:14That is why I offered her that.
04:16So it's not like this was a father launching a daughter.
04:18No, it was not like a strategic move.
04:21It happened so because he saw me perform so it happened very organically.
04:25But that's not how people will say.
04:27Nepo kid, Nepo kid.
04:29But you know a lot of people haven't.
04:31A lot of people were not even aware that I came from such wonderful lineage.
04:37Until much later.
04:38Of course there was a whole lot of people who did.
04:40But a lot of people also found out later.
04:42Right.
04:43Because I sort of didn't use that as my first card.
04:47You know what I am saying.
04:48She never used it.
04:49She never uses it also.
04:51Okay.
04:52Let me tell you something about her.
04:53Yeah.
04:54You know which is I think very very important.
04:56That me and Supriya both never had to call up any producer or director for her.
05:04Okay.
05:06We have not.
05:07Because not for any other reason or not for a reason that we wouldn't like to do that.
05:13No, it's not like that.
05:14She wouldn't like us to do that.
05:16Okay.
05:17She wanted to make a career on her own.
05:19It is in her character.
05:20I'll give you a small example.
05:23She was in 10th.
05:26And as a father I asked her that which college would you like to go to?
05:32So she said that I wish to go to Xavier's.
05:36St. Xavier's College.
05:37St. Xavier's College.
05:38I said good that you told me.
05:40Let me do some fieldings because we have some time in hand.
05:44You have to give your exams and till then I can do some fielding and keep things ready so that you can get.
05:51I said what for?
05:52She asked me.
05:53For your admission.
05:55So she said no you don't have to do anything.
05:59I'll get it on my merits.
06:01Okay.
06:02Bharti, I was mum.
06:06I did not utter a word.
06:08In 10th standard.
06:0910th standard.
06:10Okay.
06:11I didn't utter a word because I was talking to a person who was confident enough of herself and fortunately my daughter.
06:21So.
06:23What do I want?
06:24Tell me what kind of person is your dad because we know him as an actor.
06:29We know him as a comedian.
06:30We know him as a director.
06:32We know him as a singer.
06:33And a friend.
06:34And a friend for 40 years or more.
06:38You know it is such a privilege to be around a human being like him and I always say that if I wasn't born to you I'm sure I would have found you as a friend somewhere.
06:51Because forget the fact that he's been in this industry for 60 years and still working and passionate and enthusiastic.
07:00Right.
07:01But what I really see is my father has this inherent youth that's never gonna die and that's because his joy to learn, his joy to experience, his curiosity, his intelligence, his open mind is something that has been the reason why he's thrived.
07:19Right.
07:21That explains the glow on his face.
07:24Absolutely.
07:25I don't know too many people who can do so much and do it so well and that's just because he genuinely has this attitude that he wanted to keep learning.
07:36He has the mind of a student and what a wonderful storyteller he is.
07:42As a child he would tell me a new story every night.
07:46But who do you like best? Do you like the comedian in him? Do you like the storyteller in him?
07:50Storyteller. His stories, he has fantastic memory. He will remember names, conversations, the smallest things.
07:58If he has met you once he will remember you and he needs to be told things just once. He has an elephant's memory, like an incredible memory.
08:06So I would say that I love the storyteller in him and also he's such a beautiful singer.
08:12He's just singing songs. My mother and I love that.
08:16And he's self-taught. He's worked on his passion for languages, Urdu which Meena Kumari Ji taught him.
08:25His passion for singing. So he's truly passionate.
08:29Urdu too we saw in that film also.
08:31Katyar.
08:33And just imagine, for me who has started off 10 years ago to see that he won his first award at the age of 5.
08:40I mean that is some overachieving.
08:42I know, he's been a child actor since then.
08:45It's crazy. So his experiences are so much yet he's so grounded, yet he wants to learn and he never brings his experience or ego to a set.
08:55So what have you learnt best from him?
08:58All of these things that I mentioned.
09:00I'm sure.
09:01All of these things.
09:02Tell me that one quality which you really have imbibed from him.
09:05To be a foodie.
09:08That is so true.
09:09Him and I are absolute foodies.
09:12Him and I, that is so true papa.
09:15But I would say just being in the present moment and enjoying the moment.
09:21Right now I'm sitting here having a chat with you.
09:24This has to be the most important and special thing.
09:26Absolutely.
09:27Our minds are not anywhere else.
09:28It's the value for people and papa always tells me one thing which I really like.
09:34He says that you don't just arrive, you announce your arrival.
09:38Okay.
09:39And that is by your presence.
09:43And energy.
09:44Energy.
09:46It's energy.
09:47Energy is contagious, let me tell you.
09:49Yes, absolutely.
09:50So always go into a room with good energy. I think those are some of the things.
09:55Have you also watched everything that your dad does?
09:58He's done more than 200 films.
10:00And you haven't seen one?
10:01So I haven't watched all 200 films but I love Master Sachin, Baby Sachin.
10:08Baby Sachin's work is…
10:10We all do.
10:11He and Junior Mehmood used to be a team, they did some 15 films.
10:15But I feel so fortunate, Bharti, that just because I did films as child actors,
10:22I could show my childhood to my child.
10:25Yeah.
10:28You see, otherwise it is not possible.
10:30Nobody else could do that.
10:32And my mom and I both, we love watching and just observing
10:36how is it possible that such a…
10:39At the age of 5, papa did a drunk scene.
10:42He played a drunk and I said,
10:43Papa, how did you know how to be drunk when obviously as a child you didn't?
10:49You don't know anything, yeah.
10:50So, I mean, I love Majhli Didi, Haan Maaza Marga Ekla.
10:54Then we went and saw Jool Thief on the big screen,
10:57which was such an amazing experience.
10:59Imagine watching Jool Thief with him on the big screen.
11:03And of course, I have seen all of his Marathi films and
11:06Tu Tu Mein Mein, Katyaar Ka Azad, I mean, you name it.
11:09Ashi Banwa Banvi.
11:10So, of course, I have seen most of his stuff.
11:12Right.
11:13Before we go, ask your father to sing one song,
11:16which we would all like to hear.
11:18What would you like to sing?
11:19What would you like him to sing?
11:23Or we both sing together.
11:24Father's Day Sesh.
11:25How are you, sir?
11:26How are you, sir?
11:27We both sing together.
11:28You sing together?
11:29Sure.
11:31How are you, sir?
11:35How are you, sir?
11:39You have gone crazy.
11:43You have gone crazy.
11:46Crazy?
11:47Yes.
11:48Crazy?
11:49Yes.
11:50I was wondering why we met on the way.
11:54Crazy?
11:55Yes.
11:56Crazy?
11:57Yes.
11:58Why does my heart beat with these words?
12:01Sometimes it says something.
12:03Sometimes it says something.
12:05Please control your gaze.
12:09How are you, sir?
12:12How are you, sir?
12:16You have gone crazy.
12:20You have gone crazy.
12:24What a talented father and daughter.
12:27Not just actors but singers also.
12:30Fabulous.
12:31Thank you all the best.
12:32Wanting to see lots of both of you.
12:34Thank you, ma'am.
12:35Thank you so much.
12:36Thank you, ma'am.
12:37Love you.
