00:00The Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, has reported a significant cholera outbreak in Lagos state,
00:09with increasing cases across Nigeria as the raining season progresses.
00:15Between January 1st and June 11th, 2024, there have been 1,141 suspected and 65 confirmed cases of cholera,
00:26resulting in 30 deaths across 96 local government areas in 30 states.
00:32Individuals most at risk include those with limited access to clean water and sanitation,
00:39residents in areas with poor hygiene, people consuming contaminated food or fruits without proper washing and cooking,
00:46individuals not practicing proper hand hygiene, populations affected by man-made or natural disasters such as floods,
00:54leading to overcrowded conditions, caregivers for cholera patients and health care workers without proper precautions.
01:04To mitigate the risk of cholera, the NCDC advises, water safety. Boil water before drinking and store it in clean, covered containers.
01:14Hand hygiene. Frequently wash hands with soap and clean running water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
01:23Food safety. Ensure food is well cooked and wash raw foods like fruits and vegetables thoroughly with safe water.
01:33Sanitation. Avoid open defecation. Properly dispose of waste and maintain regular sewage clearing.
01:42Health care. Seek immediate medical attention for sudden watery diarrhea and avoid self-medication.
01:50Finally, if you or anyone you know experiences sudden watery diarrhea, do not self-medicate. Visit a health care facility immediately.
