01:34The sequel continues to expand upon this world within a world, through new settings such
01:41as Riley's Vault of Secrets, which utilizes 2D animation.
01:45The film most notably introduces Riley's belief system.
01:49This part of Riley's brain sees her memories mature into beliefs.

02:47of women, according to producer Mark Nielsen.
02:50To get into 13-year-old Riley's head, story artist Rebecca McVie recalls the team sitting
02:55around, sharing their most embarrassing stories from their early adolescence.

03:05They got many different perspectives, with some crew members now in their 20s and others
03:10in their 60s.
03:11Meg LeFauve, who received an Oscar nomination for co-writing the first Inside Out, also
03:16returned to scribe the script with Dave Holstein.
03:18The story team isn't the only department strong in female voices, with Andrea Datzman
03:23being the first woman to compose a Pixar feature.

03:35A favorite joke was cut.
03:37Just because a certain scene isn't vibing with the rest of the picture doesn't mean
03:40it's easy to remove.

03:47Among the ideas pitched for Inside Out 2 was Procrastination Land, an area that's under
03:52construction and always will be.
03:55Workers would be lazing around asking, hey, should we start building this land today?
03:59Looking at their phones, they decide to get around to it later.

04:07As much as Kelsey Mann loved this gag, the crew quote, couldn't fit it in a natural
04:12way.
04:13Mann found that the joke slowed the momentum down, which is essentially the point of Procrastination.
04:18Even so, Mann felt it wasn't worth bringing the story to a halt for one funny moment.
04:22Although he is determined to make Procrastination Land a reality somehow.
04:26It is funny, but it's just hurting the moment, you know?
04:30And then typically then I'll go, alright, I see your point.
04:34And we're like, well, let's just try it in a screening.

04:38Maya Hawke's audition.
04:39Get tickets now for Disney and Pixar's Inside Out 2.
04:42While five new emotions are introduced, Kelsey Mann wanted to emphasize anxiety, something
04:47every teenager can relate to.
04:49As such, finding anxiety's voice would be among the most crucial casting decisions.
04:54Mark Nielsen informed Mann that actress Maya Hawke was available to audition, but it would
04:58be during his family vacation to Disney World.
05:01In the middle of his trip, Mann was taken behind Epcot's Mexico Pavilion to a Disney
05:05office where he spoke to Hawke via Zoom.
05:08Maybe you could just stay in one place?
05:10Anything.
05:11Just call my name and I'm here for you.
05:12Mann was so touched by Hawke's audition that he practically broke out in tears.
05:16Before returning to his family, Mann called Nielsen, saying, quote,
05:19Oh my God, she's perfect.
05:22Good thing he was in Disney World because this probably would have been harder to arrange
05:25at Universal Studios.
05:27We are just super jazzed to be here.

05:32Salary disputes.
05:33Amy Poehler was reportedly offered $5 million plus bonuses to reprise her role as Joy, which
05:38she happily accepted.

05:41We're going to have a good day, which will turn into a good week, which will turn into
05:44a good year, which turns into a good life.
05:46The other returning players were supposedly only promised $100,000 each with no additional
05:52fees.
05:53Phyllis Smith and Louis Black agreed to return as Sadness and Anger, respectively.
05:57As for Disgust and Fear, Mindy Kaling and Bill Hader chose not to sign on, with the
06:01proposed salaries being cited as the main point of contention.
06:05There are at least 37 things for Riley to be scared of right now.

06:15Fear will now be voiced by Tony Hale, who previously voiced Forky in Toy Story 4.

06:23Discussing bringing back the original cast, Mark Nielsen said, quote, it doesn't always
06:27work out, going to praise the new and old voices.
06:31When I'm through, Riley will look so good.

06:37Unused ideas from the first film.
06:39One advantage of doing a sequel is resurrecting ideas that went unused in the previous film.
06:44For example, in the original Inside Out, there was going to be a room where Anger could let
06:48off steam when he lost his cool.
06:50So that's how you want to play it, old man?
06:52No dessert?
06:53Oh, sure.
06:54We'll eat our dinner right after you eat this.
06:59The scene didn't make the finished film, but the door to Anger's intended steam room did.
07:04In Inside Out 2, it's been repurposed as the door that the new emotions bust through.

07:12Speaking of which, the writers brainstormed up to 27 emotions while developing the first
07:17film, including Surprise, Pride, and Trust.
07:20While they narrowed the list to five, Inside Out 2 makes way for Anxiety, Envy, Ennui,
07:26Embarrassment, and Nostalgia.
07:27We all have a job to do.

07:40Nine new emotions were originally planned.
07:42Although five new emotions have been confirmed for Inside Out 2, Man initially envisioned
07:47nine entering Riley's head.
07:49Awe, Guilt, Jealousy, Schadenfreude, and Shame were all seriously considered, yet they were
07:55dropped from the main plot.
07:56Yeah, we watch the movies over and over and over and over again, so we're always kind
08:00of testing it.
08:01And if it doesn't get a reaction, you kind of know in the room.
08:06The story team had an especially hard time shaping Shame into a redeemable character,
08:10with Man saying, quote, it was not fun to watch.
08:14The Shame wizard would likely agree.
08:16And I've been waiting for you.
08:18You have?
08:19Oh, yes.
08:20Despite being removed, echoes of a few characters can still be found in the film.
08:25Characteristics of Jealousy would be passed on to Envy, both being cut from the same cloth.
08:30Guilt was going to lug around a luggage cart of emotional baggage.
08:33That baggage has been passed on to Anxiety, and it's still a lot to sort through.
08:38That's not going to haunt us for the rest of our lives at all.
08:40Number two, an unlikely Uncut Gems inspiration.
08:44To authentically capture Riley's anxiety, the film's camera team drew inspiration from
08:48various references.
08:50Among them was the Adam Sandler thriller Uncut Gems, easily one of the most stressful cinematic
08:55experiences of recent memory.

08:59Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:00All right, so, uh, I gotta tell you, I'm in a bit of a rush.

09:06Just as the Safdie brothers made the audience feel like they were part of the action as
09:10the walls closed in on Sandler's character, the Inside Out 2 crew aimed to convey a similar
09:14sensation with a mix of wide angles, close-ups, and handheld camera tricks.
09:19Who made the console orange?
09:21Do I look orange?
09:22I didn't touch it.

09:25Directed by Darius Khondji's cinematography, director of photography Adam Habib told IndieWire
09:30that Pixar, quote, developed these two camera languages for cranes and dolly shots inside
09:35Riley's mind, and more handheld shots outside her mind in the human world.

10:08We're all familiar with Pixar's brain trust, but Inside Out 2 owes much of its development
10:13to Riley's crew.
10:14This was the name attributed to a group of teenage girls who followed the film's evolution,
10:19returning to Pixar every four months to provide feedback.
10:21Let's do this.
10:22Hey Riley!
10:23But we need new friends or we'll be totally alone in high school.
10:27Riley's crew consisted of nine girls between the ages of 13 and 19, although some of them
10:32have entered their 20s since then.
10:34Their contributions went beyond making simple suggestions.
10:37They offered detailed notes that Kelsey Mann compared to a book report.
10:40We won the first game.
10:41Coach says we might actually go to the finals this year.
10:44Oh, and we've got this new girl on the team.
10:46She's so cool.
10:47Like Mann, Riley's crew was disappointed that Procrastination Land ultimately wasn't
10:52included.
10:53Nevertheless, this team helped to ensure Riley's interactions with her friends, peers, and
10:58emotions remained genuine to the teenage experience.
11:01Riley's life requires more sophisticated emotions than all of you.
