00:00Hello, everyone. Thank you for joining us. We have with us the fielding coach of the Indian cricket team, Mr. T. Dilip to address today's press conference.
00:07We are good to go. We will start straight away.
00:10Morning, everyone.
00:14Hi, Dilip sir. This is Ravish.
00:16Sir, we have seen that the fielding has improved a lot. But the outfield that we are seeing here is very slow. The ball comes after stopping.
00:22So, you must have told some special drills to the fielders. Did you communicate anything?
00:27The biggest thing is to adapt. Yes, it is a little soft. But that also gives another challenge. What best we can do in these circumstances.
00:36I am very happy for the players that we have followed the intent and attacking nature in these circumstances. That is one of the good things about the boys.
00:46But also, as a unit, we are out there trying to make a difference. So, every run is counted, every dive. So, there are little things which we have given a lot of detail to it.
00:56We will leave some audio if we can raise the volume.
01:04Who is next?
01:12Mr. Dilip, we have seen this fielding thing. But we have been seeing it on the nets for 2-3 days.
01:17You were training them with Rishabh Pant. He was repeatedly asking them to play specific game.
01:23Many times, he was asking them to use bouncers. He was trying some new shots. He was batting at different positions.
01:28He was batting at no. 5 and no. 3. What is his plan and is he happy with the way Rishabh Pant has chosen that option?
01:34Didn't people think that he will come at no. 3 and adjust immediately?
01:37The best thing is that Rishabh has done such a good return. Especially, the batting is considered to be very good.
01:45But one of the good things about him is the way he came back as a wicket-keeper.
01:50Especially, with an injury he had, to come back as a wicket-keeper and do that lateral movement,
01:55the way he was diving, that is very heartening to see.
01:58Coming to your question about him batting differently, having different plans in the match,
02:03it's a strategy. It's something which Rishabh always does.
02:06He tries everything in practice, whatever comes in a match, so that he is well prepared with his options,
02:11whatever he wants to try in a match.
02:15Had there been any conscious decisions that fielders can get injured on this outfield also?
02:22Because this is not just fielding, for the bowlers also.
02:26I wouldn't say, I mean to say that we have never talked about the injury part.
02:31Yes, this is a soft outfield, a little sand-based, so it can be a little difficult in diving.
02:36But still, as a group, we try to keep that intent going,
02:40where we have another advantage, when it's a soft outfield, the ball goes a little slow.
02:46So, it also gives an opportunity for the outfielders to attack on the ball.
02:49So, that was our conscious as a group.
02:53Dilip, no fielding medals this time?
02:58Fielding medals are there, you can see that.
03:04We have been giving fielding medals every game.
03:06Hi, I don't know if it was asked, what do you think of the stadium here?
03:13And what do you think about the conditions with the wetness so far?
03:20Regarding this stadium, we played earlier, so we are slightly aware of the conditions, what we get.
03:25Yes, the weather is challenging here, you don't know about when the rain comes and all.
03:30But we have been prepared for all these things, so we are focusing on what we can control.
03:35And at this point of the time, we can't control the weather conditions.
03:37So, we are trying to prepare ourselves in the best possible way.
03:40But we want a game to happen.
03:45Dilip bhai, you have been with this team for almost two years now.
03:48Who has been the most improved fielder in this team?
03:52That's a tough question and very tough answer to give.
03:56Ideally, we all did very well together.
03:59As a unit, we have been really well.
04:01But if I really want to go to specifics, what's heartening to see is the bowlers doing really well.
04:07Yes, our Jadeja is very good, Virat Kohli is good, Rohit Sharma is good.
04:11They were already doing very well.
04:13But then what's heartening is the bowlers doing really well, which is adding up.
04:17You can see that now the bowlers are standing in hot spots.
04:20So, that's a great sign for a team.
04:22So, what will happen in that, Rohit Sharma will get the versatility that he won't be far, he will come everywhere.
04:30But that versatility is giving him to keep good fielders at positions all the time.
04:34You talked about intent.
04:36This match is not that important because you have reached the Super 8.
04:40So, how do you motivate the players for such matches?
04:44Will we be able to see if the new players get a chance because the Super 8 has already been decided?
04:50I want to correct this a little bit.
04:52Because we treat every opposition at the same level.
04:56Canada is also playing very good cricket.
04:59So, we are more here to play our standards.
05:02We play for our standards and fine-tune in every match to see how we can beat and improve our standards.
05:09So, we are always looking, every game is important to us.
05:14Dilip, you said that bowlers are now standing in the hot spots.
05:18So, how did you bring about that change in the psyche?
05:22Because bowlers sometimes are a little edgy about throwing themselves on the field.
05:27It could be.
05:28So, how did you bring about that change and how is it helping?
05:31If you could just elaborate a bit.
05:33One thing is credit to the players.
05:36Mintu says, after bowling spells and coming back and especially most of the optional sessions,
05:41they are taking that initiative to come for the practice.
05:44That is first thing.
05:45And as a group, one of the key things we do as a fielding unit is strive for consistency.
05:51And in that process, two important things we did in this,
05:54we tried to do in this tournament is attitude and attention to detail.
06:00Attention to detail means when the ball is going on the boundary, slow outfield,
06:04you all were never giving up till last moment.
06:06Backing up when somebody is throwing.
06:08So, building that confidence in the players that you go for it, doesn't matter if you take it or not.
06:13That's way we are pushing the players to take that extraordinary catches in the match.
06:18Smith Patel from Crick Bus.
06:20Wickets like the ones we had in New York, they kind of give some sort of false sense of security to the bowlers
06:29and in turn, also give some false sense of insecurity to the batters.
06:34And so, how do the bowlers and the batters adapt to new conditions like these,
06:40which would be adept to batting?
06:45Pretty good question, I would say, considering New York wickets and all.
06:48But coming to our team especially, we don't have a set way of this is how we need to play or this is how we need to win.
06:57We play the conditions and our team in such good form that we have the experience in it
07:03and the skill set to adapt and adjust to various conditions whatever is presented to us.
07:07Because there is certain play demanded in New York for that kind of wickets
07:11and there would be certain kind of play which may be demanding here and would be different in West Indies.
07:16So, as a group, we are adapting all the time and being very versatile in what we are doing.
07:23Coach, down the back.
07:25Sorry if this has already been asked, but can you give us an idea from the team's perspective
07:29what it's been like to be in the United States?
07:31Obviously, a completely different scenario to where we normally have cricket tournaments.
07:35How has the team embraced that? How have they enjoyed it?
07:39Firstly, it's great to be here because cricket is not the main sport here.
07:44But we can see that lot of fans here who are enthusiastic.
07:47But also, the encouragement we get, we never feel as an Indian cricketer,
07:51we never feel that we are away from home because most of the time we get that encouragement.
07:55But good to see that cricket is being spread all over the country
07:58and especially these kind of places where the infrastructure is getting better.
08:03And I'm sure the pitches over a period will get better with the playing.
08:07But as a group, we are enjoying here, out there.
08:09Whether it's playing or off the field, we have been really nice.
08:13Absolutely. And any players or support staff on the team, are they fans of American sports?
08:18Do you see any similarities in the sporting landscape over here?
08:22The other day, we went to Yankee Stadium.
08:23So, we watched some baseball stuff out there and we met an NFL player.
08:28So, it's diverse sports.
08:30So, we try to get in what we can learn from other sports.
08:33So, it gives an opportunity to look into other sports.
08:38In this group, you've obviously got two associate teams in US and Canada and then Ireland,
08:44who've come out of that system.
08:46What's been your impression in this tournament?
08:48With such an expanded 20-team tournament,
08:50what's been your impression of the performance of associate teams so far?
08:56They've been pretty impressive.
08:57If you look at the way Canada has played, US has played.
09:01They've won. They've been a good competition to the mainstream teams.
09:05So, one best part of T20 is, on a given day, anybody can beat anybody.
09:10So, T20 is such a format, I'm sure.
09:12The way the cricket is spreading around, I can see many of these teams
09:16and many of these players also getting a chance in a different franchise league around,
09:20which makes them more competitive.
09:24You said that the team did go to Yankee Stadium to watch a game?
09:28Yes, some of the players, but also the staff.
09:31We went to Yankee Stadium to watch the game.
09:33What do you think about baseball?
09:34It's fantastic, because I love it.
09:36Because there are certain things which I've been using for pretty long.
09:40Because back in there, I had an opportunity to work with Mike King,
09:44with an Australian team. He was a baseball player.
09:47So, quite a few inputs from that game really helped me in cricket.
09:55Thank you. Thank you all.
