00:00Thank you, Mr. Speaker, and I thank the gentleman from New York.
00:04Mr. Speaker, this contempt resolution is the latest attempt to tear down our democracy.
00:10The Department of Justice has cooperated with congressional Republicans at every turn,
00:16but after 92,000 pages of documents, more than a dozen transcribed interviews, and a
00:22250-page transcript that was verified, my colleagues still aren't satisfied.
00:29They are doing this in service of one man, the disgraced former president, in a misguided
00:34attempt to distract from his crimes.
00:37On May 30th, a jury of stranger citizens found Mr. Trump guilty of 34 felony charges.
00:44It is beyond disheartening that a former president, and now potential presidential candidate again,
00:51was convicted of coordinating a, quote, unlawful conspiracy to win in the 2016 election, and
00:59falsifying records to cover his tryst with an adult porn star.
01:04I'm grateful that the rule of law prevailed, yet I am deeply concerned that our democratic
01:09institutions are under threat.
01:11Some of these attacks coming from within.
01:14Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan said a kangaroo court convicted President Trump.
01:20Senator Johnson called the trial a political, purely political exercise.
01:26Mr. Trump apparently pities himself as a so-called political prisoner.
01:31All this to tear down our American's faith in the rule of law.
01:35Contrary to his complaints, Mr. Trump was tried and treated fairly.
01:40Justice was served in a courtroom that was open and filled with reporters, and a jury
01:44that was chosen by the prosecution and the defense.
01:49This is the rule of law at work.
01:52Political rhetoric and deliberate misinformation, the likes of these and dangerous many others,
01:57erode faith in our institutions and threaten the safety of the American people.
02:02These attacks undermine the rule of law, which stands to protect the rights of all people.
02:07When Attorney General Merrick Garland was before the Judiciary Committee —
02:10Mr. Speaker, I yield the gentlelady an additional 30 seconds.
02:14Thank you.
02:16When Attorney General was before the Judiciary Committee, he described his career upholding
02:20the rule of law.
02:21In his own words, that meant ensuring that, quote, we treat like cases alike, that we
02:27do not have enemies or friends, that we do not pay attention to the political parties
02:33or the wealth or the power or the influence of the people we are investigating, that we
02:39follow the facts and the law.
02:41This is what distinguishes America from our adversaries.
02:44I yield back.
