00:10What I'm doing is called an altruistic kidney donation.

00:14Some people call it Good Samaritan donation.

00:17Most of the time this week I've thought,

00:19who the f*** would do this?

00:21Like, yeah, well, me. That's who.

00:23What's the reason for this?

00:25Empathy is understanding somebody else's emotional state.

00:32Empathy leads to altruism.

00:34I don't think people are just born good people.

00:36How do we get from, I understand your distress,

00:38to I care and I want to help make it better?

00:41I think you, like, do good things, or you don't.

00:44That's the process we don't really understand.

00:46This is already so dramatic.

00:48It wasn't that easy for me to find a donor,

00:51at least the first time.

00:52And now I'm very nice to my interns.

00:56Maybe I'm not, like, as stable as these other team kidney people.

01:00If I die, what happens to my cat?

01:02But, like, I can do this.

01:04This is not that big of a deal.

01:06Do I have a mortician in mind?

01:10For me, the feeling of that edict,

01:12that you are supposed to care for others

01:14the way that you would care for yourself

01:16or care for your loved ones,

01:17is so important and so difficult.

01:21The problem with the parable of the Good Samaritan

01:23is there are an endless number of roads

01:25and an infinite number of people lying on the side of them

01:27in need of help.

01:31What are you supposed to do?

01:33I think it's a question that all of us should be asking ourselves.

01:35Short of running into a burning building

01:38or pulling someone out of a frozen lake,

01:40where could you save somebody so dramatically?

01:45The point is that you are helping a stranger.

01:49Can we fake my death?

01:51That's the only way to get out of email.
