00:06U.S. President Joe Biden's son Hunter leaves federal court in Delaware a convicted felon.
00:12A jury found him guilty of three felony charges related to a gun he purchased in 2018.
00:18Those include falsifying paperwork to buy a gun
00:22and unlawfully possessing the weapon for 11 days while being a drug user.
00:27Hunter Biden was convicted of two counts of lying on a form submitted to a federal firearms dealer
00:34about his addiction or use of crack cocaine
00:37and possessing a firearm while a user or addict.
00:45Hunter's defense team argued that he was not using drugs at the time of purchase
00:49and did not knowingly violate the law.
00:52But he now faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in jail.
00:57But while prison is a possibility legal experts say for a first-time offender probation is more likely.
01:04Hunter has responded to his verdict saying he's disappointed by the outcome
01:09but grateful for the love and support of his family and friends.
01:14It marks the first time in US history the child of a sitting president has been convicted of a crime.
01:21No one in this country is above the law.
01:23Everyone must be accountable for their actions even this defendant.
01:31President Joe Biden embraced Hunter after flying to Delaware
01:35but earlier at a gun safety summit he did not address the verdict
01:39instead saying in a statement that he loves his son
01:42and will accept the outcome of the case and the judicial process.
01:46The campaign of his presidential rival Donald Trump responded to Hunter's verdict
01:51saying the trial has been nothing more than a distraction.
01:56It's the second guilty verdict to rock the US election campaign in two weeks.
02:01After likely Republican candidate Trump was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records
02:07to influence the 2016 election.
02:10Trump is continuing to rally against that guilty verdict
02:13saying he's the victim of a rigged justice system.
02:17I think this will pose a contrast.
02:20I can say this for the public and they should see the contrast
02:23between one person wanting to blow up the justice system
02:27and the other person accepting it at the pain of his own family.
02:32Democrats are expected to seize on this verdict to counter Donald Trump's claims
02:36of a justice system that's been weaponized against him.
02:41But Hunter Biden's legal troubles don't end here.
02:45He'll face a trial for tax evasion in September
02:47before being handed his sentence for these gun charges.
02:51Expected before the US presidential election in November.
