Grant Shapps says that he is “filled with pride” when he thinks about the story of Rishi Sunak’s childhood, saying that his parents gave up a lot to bring him up so that he could go on to be prime minister. The defence secretary said: “He comes from an immigrant family who come here, work hard, do give up on things in order to bring their children up… who ends up being prime minister of the United Kingdom.” Report by Covellm. 00:00 I think the Prime Minister is the example of exactly what this country is at our best.
00:05 It comes from an immigrant family who come here, work hard, who give up on things in order to
00:13 bring their children up, and in this case, the Prime Minister, who ends up being Prime
00:20 Minister of the United Kingdom. I mean, it is literally the story of Britain,
00:25 and I think we should be proud that this country allows that kind of aspiration.
00:31 He clearly comes from a family who work very hard and ran their own, I think, pharmacy,
00:36 and I'm filled with pride when I think about his story of his childhood, to be perfectly honest.
00:43 The guy is brought up by parents who are immigrants, who are extremely aspirational for him,
00:48 and clearly prioritised his welfare, his education, as many parents do for their kids.
00:55 And actually, I think that is a fantastically British story.
