00:57And a couple slipped through on the inside.
00:59Daniel tried to go around the outside of Turn 2 and lost out by Daniel Ricciardo.

03:08So that rather scuppered that cunning plan.
03:11But I get the feeling that was a call made by the driver.

04:05These cars have got enough downforce to squash that out.
04:07But here we go.

04:11This will be an easy move.

04:13It looked pretty easy, didn't it, for Lando Norris?
04:16And he's up into second place.
04:18Got a much better exit out of the hairpin.
04:20And a round of applause from those in the garage.
04:23Russell leads.
04:24And it's now Lando Norris with a new fastest lap, chasing him down in second.
04:28And this is how Lando got that second place.
04:32Yeah, breeze past.
04:34Two laps ago, Lando Norris was third on the previous lap.
04:38Lando Norris was second.
04:40On lap 21, Lando Norris leads.
04:43And he's past George Russell, who then goes off.
04:47Keeps that second place for now.
04:49But Max Verstappen, almost into the back of him,
04:52takes that second place from George Russell.
04:54He's gone from first now down to third.
04:56Lap 21 for him.
04:57Let's have a look at what happened again.

05:00It was as easy as it was to get past Max Verstappen.

05:05Comes past the bollard on the left-hand side.

05:14So George realised he wasn't going to make the exit of that chicane
05:17without being in the wall.
05:18I think he'll get away with that one with the stewards.

05:33Logan Sargent's had one little brush with the barriers at Turn 6.

06:38It was a four-tenths of a second better pit stop
06:41for Russell than Verstappen.
06:42It nearly got him second place back again.
06:44Very difficult sort of tunnel there.
06:47So I want to see what tyres they're all on
06:50as they left the pit lane.
06:52They're all inters, I'm hearing.

06:57And they are all intermediates out there.
06:59Lando Norris is far enough ahead
07:00with the long safety car we're now going to have.

07:05and get his pit stop done.

07:08Verstappen is just making his way around the hairpin.
07:11And yeah, he did hit the barriers.

08:26And that's three cars trying to go into the chicane
08:31and slicing his way right through the middle of it

08:40He's got Daniel Ricciardo just ahead of him
08:44and Esteban Ocon is the other car involved.
08:47Ocon who hasn't pitted yet, remember.
08:50So he's on those intermediate tyres that he started with
08:52and look, it's like Moses in the Red Sea.
08:54It just opened up for him.
08:55Sargent's his second DNF of the last four Grand Prix
08:59and that is Carlos Sainz heading down.
09:05Well, I think it might have got a bit dislodged
09:07behind Valtteri Bottas.

09:10And was there a bit of contact to help it on its way

09:21Norris just couldn't get the car stopped on that dry line.

09:31The only good thing to say about that from Lando's point of view
09:33is he got a nice cooling down of his tyres to stop him overheating.
09:37But now McLaren are going to react and bring Lando Norris in.
09:40Crofty, you know the lap that Lewis Hamilton
09:43pulled the trigger on all of this?
09:44It was lap 44.
09:46Norris goes round. Norris goes round again.
09:50So Max Verstappen into the pits.
09:53George Russell into the pits.
09:55McLaren doing the opposite to the other two in the top three
09:58and Lando Norris staying out.
10:00They've got the data from Oscar Piastri on the medium tyres
10:04to see if it's the right tyre to be on at the moment.
10:06They've decided that actually the intermediate tyre
10:09is still the right one and Norris just set the fastest lap.
10:12And out of the pit lane comes Lando Norris.
10:15This is going to be really, really tight.
10:17This is for the lead of the Canadian Grand Prix.
10:19Lando Norris is ahead of Max Verstappen,
10:22but not for long because Verstappen has warmer tyres,
10:26has the grip and gets the acceleration
10:29to get the lead of the race.
10:31And this is where George Russell has got to try and take
10:33every single opportunity to get back into the top two
10:37and he is doing that bit by bit with DRS assistance.
10:40George Russell goes back into second place.
10:43Yeah, that George knows.
10:46Oh, he's got some oversteer on the way in.
10:48That walked him wide, did well to hoover it up.
10:51It's cost him a position and really that's taken away
10:54a great opportunity to hunt down Verstappen for a victory.
10:58Does George Russell just make too many mistakes
11:02at times when the opportunity comes his way?
11:06That's a question, not a comment.
11:09And he's going to live back into the pits, Sergio Perez.
11:15That will be, I would imagine, his race over and done with.
11:19And there we've got Alex Albon against the wall.
11:22Carlos Sainz spinning around in the grass.
11:26And I told you that there's still a bit of jeopardy
11:28to go in this race.
11:30I think they were very close together.
11:32They were racing, weren't they, Sainz and Albon?
11:34They just got into the points, had Carlos Sainz.
11:37And I think Sainz had just passed Alex Albon
11:40and up into 10th place.
11:43One Williams out earlier in the race.
11:45And I think the other Williams to follow him now.
11:47And yes, we have, Martin, got a safety car.
11:50They couldn't account for Sainz and Albon.
11:53But watch out for Lewis Hamilton now.
11:56He can make a free pit stop, put on brand new tyres
11:59and then have that good position to attack Piastri
12:03after the safety car ends.
12:05Let's see, it's Sainz coming in, probably for damage
12:10assessment and new tyres.
12:12But watch if Hamilton pits under the safety car.

12:18and getting on the wet stuff on medium compound.
12:21Slick tyres, just driver error there, I'm afraid.

12:31And as he span round, sadly, Alex Albon had nowhere to go.
12:34And that's taken both of them out of the race.

12:40Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz.
12:42Two Ferraris, two Williams and a Sergio Perez
12:45who scored just four points in the last three races.
12:49It's one of those silly spins as a racing driver.
12:53Nothing telegraphs you that's going to happen.
12:56And it's just a big, lazy slide that you can't do anything about.
13:00It's a really hopeless feeling.
13:02He obviously just touched the slightly...
13:05The more he slid, the more he touched the wet track.
13:08But it was already going round on the way into the corner, wasn't it?

13:12If he'd have put his foot on the brake,
13:14he may have stopped short of whacking into Albon.
13:18Last time around, he went right off the last corner.
13:21Will he do a different strategy this time?

13:27Max Verstappen survived one safety car restart
13:30and he survived this one too.
13:32And Lando Norris is nicely ahead of Oscar Piastri
13:34and George Russell nicely ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton.
13:37I think he's lost DRS here, Oscar Piastri,
13:39and I think that's a problem.
13:41That is George Russell.
13:42It is about to become very problematic indeed.
13:45Piastri hasn't got DRS, George Russell has.
13:48It's an extra piece of weaponry that Russell is putting to good use.
13:51As into the chicane they go and there's contact
13:53between Russell and Piastri.
13:55And Piastri stays ahead and George Russell has to back out
13:59and he really went for it but he's now lost a place
14:01to his teammate Lewis Hamilton.
14:03But I think that was just good hard racing.

14:09Yeah, I think Piastri was entitled to hold his line on the inside.
14:14He's on the racing line.
14:16Russell was ahead.
14:18But not by, you know, he was,
14:21Piastri was still substantially alongside him, wasn't he?
14:24Behind Oscar Piastri, he's trying to break the toe.
14:27Now the last time a Mercedes tried to get past Oscar Piastri here,
14:30it did not end well.
14:31This is going to end better for the Mercedes though.
14:33Hamilton into the top three.
14:35Sunoda, Sunoda at turn nine has an issue as George Russell
14:41into the final chicane gets past Oscar Piastri.
14:45So Russell back up into fourth place.
14:48He's been in every single one of those positions in the top five
14:51and it's fourth for him at the moment.
14:53This is what happened to Yuki Sunoda
14:55who's taken himself out of a decent points finish
14:58and very nearly wiped out himself for one of the cars chasing him.
15:02And the marker board, the marker board to tell you you must go round it
15:05that we said was really difficult to get to.
15:07He tried and it cost him.
15:09I think it's just a wet grass.
15:10He was already spinning, wasn't he?
15:12And that's a great shame.
15:14That's taken him out of the World Championship points, as you say.
15:17Well, did he follow the race director's notes?
15:20You've got to go to the left of the bollard, not through it.

16:09First time he's ever failed to finish at the top five
16:12at any of the opening eight races in his career.

16:19Russell took the brave move to go, I think, to the inside.

16:25But he managed to get the car stopped in time for the apex.
