Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was re-elected as the Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) on Saturday. The decision, proposed by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and seconded by Gaurav Gogoi and Tariq Anwar, was unanimously approved by the MPs in the Central Hall of Parliament. In her address, Sonia Gandhi urged party MPs to be "watchful, vigilant, and proactive" in Parliament. She stressed the need to hold the new NDA government accountable, prevent the ruling establishment from disrupting parliamentary proceedings, and ensure proper debate and consideration of legislation.

00:00Now, I request you, Honorable Madam Sonia Gandhi to deliver a speech.
00:20Congress President Malik Arjunji, Rahul, Vinod Gopalji,
00:29Pramod Tiwariji, Borav Gogoiji, K. Sureshji, Members of Parliament, Friends.
00:40I am deeply conscious of the great responsibility all of you have placed on me yet again.
00:50Thank you.
00:51Let me first of all greet and congratulate all the newly elected Lok Sabha Members of Parliament.
01:06You have fought a tough election.
01:11Under the most challenging of circumstances,
01:15you have surmounted many obstacles and campaigned so very effectively.
01:24Your success has given us a much, much greater presence in the Lok Sabha
01:31and a more effective voice in its proceeding,
01:35both of which will help give greater strength to our participation.
01:43The Indian National Congress has once again demonstrated its resilience.
01:51It was up against a mighty and malevolent machine that was doing its utmost to destroy us.
02:01It tried to cripple us financially.
02:05It carried out a campaign against us and our leaders that was full of lies and defamation.
02:16Many wrote our obituaries, but under the determined leadership of Kargiji, we persevered.
02:27He is an inspiration to us all.
02:30His commitment to the party organisation and its ideology is truly extraordinary
02:40and we all have to learn from his example.
02:45The Bharat Joro Yatra and the Bharat Joro Nyaya Yatra were historic movements
02:54which rejuvenated our party at all levels.
02:58Rahul deserves special thanks for his tenacity and determination
03:09to fight on in the face of unprecedented personal and political attacks.
03:17He also shaped our narrative on guarantees and on the protection of the Constitution.
03:28Very sharply.
03:30And it is my personal belief that the constant upholding of the importance of our Constitution
03:43during our campaigns by Rahulji, Kargiji and all of you
03:49is that which compelled the Prime Minister yesterday to bow down literally
03:59to that which is for us a precious book containing the Constitution of India.
04:12The CWC Resolution passed yesterday has, not earlier today, sorry, there is a mistake here,
04:27has also thanked all of you, all of our colleagues and workers across the country
04:33who worked and they too worked very hard and so very diligently for our success.
04:42On your behalf I wish to reiterate that sentiment strongly.
04:49Lots of workers in both rural and urban areas have stood by the party in the most difficult of times.
05:00We salute their courage and commitment. We owe them a debt of gratitude.
05:09Ours has also been a campaign where we have functioned truly as a collective.
05:17To those of our colleagues who contested the election but lost,
05:23I extend our full support and tell them that they fought valiantly and did our party proud.
05:33Our numbers in Parliament have increased significantly.
05:40Not only is the Indian National Congress a large contingent in the Los Sabah
05:47but we are bolstered by the strength of our India partners,
05:53some of whom have themselves come back impressively.
05:59Yet, as we celebrate our recovery, we must also reflect what we need to do
06:09to improve our position in states where our performance has been far below our expectation.
06:19The Congress President spoke about this earlier in the day at the CWC
06:26and I wish to reinforce his plea.
06:29The Prime Minister who sought the mandate solely in his name
06:36to the exclusion of both his party and its allies has suffered a political and worse, a moral defeat.
06:48In reality, he has lost the mandate he sought and thereby lost the right to leadership as well.
06:58Yet, far from taking responsibility for failure, he intends to get himself sworn in again tomorrow.
07:10We do not expect him to change the substance and style of his governance
07:16nor take cognizance of the will of the people.
07:20That is why, as members of CPP, we have a special obligation
07:29to be watchful, vigilant and proactive in holding him and his new NDA government accountable.
07:40No longer can and should Parliament be bulldozed like it has been for a decade now.
07:48No longer will the writ of the ruling establishment be permitted to disrupt Parliament
07:56whimsically, mistreat members or push through legislation without due and proper consideration and debate.
08:06No longer can and should parliamentary committees be ignored or bypassed like they have been since 2014.
08:15No longer will Parliament be muscled and stifled as it has been over the past ten years.
08:25We have challenging times ahead.
08:29We have to be alert, prevent any attempt to increase polarisation and erosion of secular and democratic values.
08:39So this is a renewed opportunity for us as a party that establishes parliamentary democracy in our country
08:52to bring parliamentary politics back on track to where they legitimately belong.
09:00In this election, the people have voted decisively to reject the politics of divisiveness and authoritarianism.
09:11They have voted to strengthen parliamentary politics and safeguard our constitution.
09:18They have voted for the agenda of economic and social justice that indeed should continue to be our objective and guide.
09:29Friends, this is a very emotional moment for me, for us all, especially the newly elected members of Parliament.
09:40All I have to say is that I have received so much love and affection from you.
09:46So let me close by the assurance to you all that I will do my best and more to fulfil the trust and confidence you have continued to place on me.
10:02Thank you. Jai Hind.
