00:00 Making wine bottles is a hot and resource intensive process.
00:07 This plant just outside of South Australia's Barossa Valley is one of the biggest producers
00:12 and recyclers of glass bottles in the country.
00:15 We're currently bringing glass from Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland
00:20 and the Northern Territory and we also use about 80% of the CDS glass that's available
00:25 in South Australia.
00:26 It takes a lot of energy but the plant has been working on efficiency measures.
00:31 They're the first large scale facilities to qualify for the SA Government's Retailer Energy
00:36 Productivity Scheme.
00:38 It sets mandatory energy efficiency targets set annually by the Minister.
00:42 Origin and Aurora have partnered up here and have given us quite considerable savings in
00:47 gas and electricity use which is quite remarkable.
00:50 The first step in any great sustainability plan is energy efficiency because you can
00:56 reduce carbon and cost at the same time.
00:58 Historically the scheme has focused on households and smaller businesses.
01:02 Now a new oxygen fuelled furnace, due in service this year, will help reduce its energy use.
01:08 When it's finished the new furnace upgrade with the oxygen fired furnace, we'll put that
01:13 furnace in the top 10% in the world for energy efficiency.
01:18 It's expected to cut carbon emissions by 20%.
01:21 The company will also expand its collection of recycled glass from other states which
01:25 is then reused into new products.
01:28 About every 10% of recycled glass we reduce our CO2 emissions by about 5%.
01:33 There's expected financial benefits too.
01:36 Combined the furnace and glass recycling projects are estimated to save the company up to $18
01:41 million on its energy bills over the next decade.
