Transcript
00:00 "It could be any one of us at this point."
00:02 "That's great. Go ahead, make your jokes, mister.
00:04 Jokey. Joke maker."
00:07 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the top 30 live-action comedy films released from 2000 onward.
00:14 "Did you bring your rollerblades?"
00:16 "I literally go nowhere without them."
00:18 Number 30, Game Night.
00:20 "Wait a second, I know you're meth and all, but you can't just come in here and break the door."
00:23 "I do not mind this game."
00:26 This film starts with a promising setup centered on a mystery game that spirals into an actual crime caper.
00:32 Game Night makes the most of its premise with gleefully violent action, a screenplay full of surprises, and a well-oiled ensemble.
00:40 The standout is Jesse Plemons, who is known for playing comedic relief characters and mysterious creeps.
00:46 His character here is a little bit of both, and giving him an adorable dog only adds to the uncomfortable hilarity.
00:52 "I do hope you keep me in mind for any future Game Nights."
00:57 "You bet."
00:58 "I've always enjoyed the camaraderie of good friends competing in games of chance and skill."
01:05 Directors John Francis Daly and Jonathan Goldstein have a hit-and-miss track record, but Game Night rules nothing but sixes.
01:12 "When shall we play next?"
01:14 Number 29, The Big Sick.
01:16 "For your files, your ex-files, because that's your favorite show, huh?"
01:24 "Thank you so much."
01:26 "The truth is out there!"
01:28 2017 was a breakout year for a couple of comedic talents, including the fantastic Tiffany Haddish.
01:34 "I didn't know it was your lunch!"
01:39 Kumail Nanjiani hit the big time with his Oscar-nominated screenplay for The Big Sick, which he co-wrote with his real-life spouse Emily V. Gordon.
01:47 The film is loosely based on their relationship, with Nanjiani channeling himself, while the delightful Zoe Kazan fills the Emily role.
01:55 "So if I yelled out, like, 'You're amazing in bed,' that'd be a heckle?"
02:00 "Yeah, it would be an accurate heckle."
02:02 While their complicated love story is at the rom-com's core, The Big Sick is also about balancing family, culture, and one's passion.
02:10 Kumail shows us that's easier said than done.
02:13 By getting to know Emily's parents, however, Kumail undergoes a personal journey that brings about growth, tears, and laughs.
02:19 "Not, like, sexy, but, like, cool sexy. Not, like, aroused sexy. I'm gonna not say sexy anymore."
02:28 It may be the most mature comedy yet from director Michael Showalter and producer Judd Apatow.
02:34 There's never been a more unlikely action star than Scott Pilgrim.
02:53 Edgar Wright's adaptation of Brian Lee O'Malley's graphic novels is a love letter to video games, manga, and everything nerd culture.
03:00 Of all the films on this list, Scott Pilgrim may have the most ingenious visual gags.
03:06 But that doesn't mean it lacks quotable one-liners or colorful characters, either.
03:10 "The only thing keeping me and her apart is the two minutes it's gonna take to kick your ass."
03:15 "Can I have your autograph, please?"
03:21 "What's up? How's life?"
03:23 Every time you watch it, you find something new to appreciate, as is the case with the best comedies.
03:29 The film notoriously and inexplicably bombed upon release, but a comedy this inventive was born for cult status.
03:36 "That's Todd!" "I know!" "Oh, yeah!" "You know?" "Oh, yeah!" "Oh, no!"
03:46 So much so that a theatrical re-release was announced for its 10th anniversary.
03:51 This Paul Thomas Anderson film is often cited as Adam Sandler's first foray into drama.
03:59 Although Sandler shows a more serious side of himself than audiences were used to, the film is just as much a romantic comedy.
04:06 While Anderson and Sandler seemed like an odd pairing, both creators are known for surreal humor.
04:11 "To stumble across the pudding, it's just tremendous how most people don't look. They don't look at the fine print, Lance."
04:17 "Oh, my. Okay!"
04:20 Punch-Drunk Love finds the middle ground between Sandler's silliness and Anderson's dark edge to produce a strange yet sincere romance.
04:28 In many respects, the film isn't a huge departure for Sandler.
04:32 Like Happy Gilmore, Barry Egan is a short-tempered yet sensitive soul.
04:36 "Oh, okay. Sorry. And the waiter come by yet?"
04:43 It's still very much an Adam Sandler movie, but Anderson finds layers we never realized were there.
04:49 "I run a legitimate business here."
04:51 "Listen to me. What's your name, sir? Answer me!"
04:56 "What would you like to say to Beatrice right now?"
05:05 "I'm sorry. I'm sorry you had to see that."
05:09 "Beatrice, can you look at us? Come on, honey. Mommy and Daddy are over here."
05:14 Best in Show was a stellar introduction to the competitive world of dog shows.
05:18 We've all heard of stage parents, but dog owners and trainers can be just as over the top.
05:23 As Christopher Guest mockumentary isn't so much about dogs as it is about human nature.
05:28 We've all met somebody who treats their pet as their child.
05:31 "You left it at the hotel. You go back and you get her busy, B! Go to the hotel and get busy, B! Run! Run! Go! Mommy's getting your toy. Don't you worry."
05:41 So the characters here, as bizarre as they might be, are oddly relatable.
05:45 The film is carried by an all-star comedic cast comprised of Guest's usual suspects improvising much of their dialogue.
05:52 Arguably the funniest actor is Fred Willard, who impressively maintains a straight face while providing completely ludicrous commentary.
06:00 "Just checking out the dog's testicular area to make sure that everything is intact."
06:07 "Hate to go out on a date with Judge Edie Franklin, have her judge me. That'd be no fun."
06:12 It's not unusual to suddenly discover that your fiancé has been hiding an intimidating millionaire family from you. Not in a rom-com anyway.
06:23 "Pursuing one's passion. How American."
06:26 Crazy rich Asians invigorated that familiar concept with New Life, turning it into one of the biggest hits of 2018.
06:33 "You both went to the same school, yet someone came back with a degree that's useful. And the other one came back as Asian Ellen."
06:41 Based on Kevin Kwan's novel, the movie depicts amiable Professor Rachel as she struggles to win over her future husband's eccentric relatives and matriarch.
06:50 "This is why Disco died."
06:52 "You kind of look like a slutty Ebola virus."
06:54 Critics and audiences applauded its affectionate representation of multiple cultures and demographics, and its diverse casting made the film success an inspiration.
07:03 "Ama says if we don't pass traditions down like this, they'll disappear."
07:08 "God forbid we lose the ancient Chinese tradition of guilting your children."
07:11 Supported by kooky characters, a smart screenplay, and a pitch-perfect cast, Crazy Rich Asians is a milestone for inclusivity while still being downright hilarious.
07:23 #24 Barbie
07:25 Nothing matches Hot Pink better than existential dread.
07:28 "Goodnight Barbies! I'm definitely not thinking about death anymore."
07:31 Not only did Barbie reach new heights both culturally and financially, it dazzled audiences with its empowering messaging, visually stunning direction, and standout performances.
07:41 "Or you can know the truth about the universe. The choice is now yours."
07:48 "The first one, the high heel."
07:50 "No. We'll do a redo. You're supposed to want to know."
07:54 Even with all that aside, the film is simply hilarious.
07:57 "I'd like to apply for your job at Beach."
07:59 "So you want to be a lifeguard?"
08:01 "Oh, I'm not trained to go over there. I'm trained to stand confidently right here."
08:06 "But there's nobody in danger here."
08:08 "And even if there were, I'm not trained to save them."
08:10 Ryan Gosling's Ken is easily one of the most quotable characters in recent film history.
08:15 We're still laughing at his sublime delivery.
08:18 "I'm just Ken. Anywhere else I'd be a 10."
08:23 "Is it my destiny to live and die a life of blonde fragility?"
08:31 And when you have the likes of Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell, and Michael Cera in your cast, you know you're in for a great time.
08:37 We predict that Barbie will continue to be beloved beyond the peak of its popularity for decades to come.
08:44 Number 23. Jojo Rabbit
08:46 "Hal-hillah."
08:48 "Just throw it away. Don't even think about it."
08:50 "Hal-hillah."
08:51 "No, you're overthinking it."
08:52 From Booksmart to Jojo Rabbit, 2019 was a year of unconventional coming-of-age stories.
08:57 This is especially true for the latter film, which revolves around a Hitler youth who realizes that their Fuhrer is not the cool guy he's been imagining.
09:06 The titular Jojo also grows closer to a young Jewish girl.
09:10 "Rilke."
09:11 "Oh, yeah, of course, your favorite, Rilke."
09:13 "Jewish mother."
09:14 "Dietrich, then."
09:15 "Houdini."
09:16 "No."
09:17 In an age where some comedians are afraid to tackle controversial subjects, writer-director Taika Waititi goes all in.
09:24 He does so with an almost naive sincerity by telling the story through a child's eyes.
09:29 At the same time, Waititi explores the horrors of Nazi Germany and sends a clear anti-hate message.
09:36 This balance of edgy comedy, quirkiness, and drama amounted to a Best Picture nomination and a Best Adapted Screenplay win for Waititi.
09:45 "See that American there? Just go give him a hug. Go, run, let's go!"
09:49 "A perspective manipulator."
09:55 "What's a perspective manipulator?"
09:57 "Oh, that's a guy who's slightly shorter than Connor, who he pays to stand near him at events to make him look taller."
10:04 It's bewildering that for how funny it is, Popstar was a box office bomb.
10:09 We guess since The Lonely Island really rose to fame on TV and online, their fans were less willing to get out of the house and go to the theater.
10:16 Thanks to home media, Popstar is starting to gain the cult following it deserves.
10:21 The story is essentially every other movie about an egotistical musician who needs to learn humility.
10:26 "I'm doing a series on show ponies."
10:30 "I actually have a lot of trouble with the hooves."
10:32 But within the stereotypical plot, we get an onslaught of cameos and absurd musical stylings that put Lonely Island on the map.
10:40 Popstar delivers in spades.
10:42 "It gets me so angry on behalf of them. I feel passionate, not gay. So I pray for them and I say for them, we need to make a change, not gay."
10:49 Sometimes the best comedies are the ones that know exactly what they are and run with it.
10:59 "Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge. If you master the five D's, no amount of balls on earth can hit you."
11:07 Rather than dodge its potential shortcomings as a predictable rags to riches story, Dodgeball embraces them completely and is all the better for it.
11:15 With Vince Vaughn and a roided out Ben Stiller leading the pack, it's the kind of movie that's at its best when at its most nonsensical.
11:22 "Average Joe's does not have enough players and will be forfeiting the championship match."
11:27 "It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for him."
11:30 A worthy successor to the profane and over-the-top sports comedies of the 90s, what Dodgeball lacks in surprises, it more than makes up for in endlessly quotable lines and a wholesome ensemble of lovable losers.
11:43 "After this tournament, your gym, your life and your gal are gonna be mine. All mine. To be continued."
11:54 "You don't get to touch me. Ever."
11:58 Taika Waititi has become one of the major comedic auteurs in the last decade and while he has created some great and hilarious flicks, our favorite has to be 2014's "What We Do In The Shadows" which he co-created with another New Zealand funnyman, Jemaine Clement.
12:13 "We're going to have a flat meeting in about 10 minutes."
12:16 "20."
12:17 "Okay."
12:18 This movie takes a satirical look at the vampire genre and employs the mockumentary style to flawless comedic effect. The story is set in Wellington and focuses on a group of vampire roommates.
12:29 "Oh no. Pizza got him."
12:32 Waititi and Clement both star in the film which works on both obvious physical jokes and more clever subversive ones, making for a well-rounded horror comedy that we could watch again and again.
12:43 "It really, really sucks that I can't eat him. I just want to like, ahhh."
12:49 "Number 19, Walk Hard, The Dewey Cox Story."
12:53 The trend of satirizing common film genres started, of course, long before "What We Do In The Shadows."
12:58 "Goodbye, Paul. Just wait till you see what happens now."
13:04 In 2007, "Walk Hard, The Dewey Cox Story" took a stab at the tropes found in the standard music biopic, seeming to pay particular attention to Walk the Line and Ray.
13:14 John C. Reilly stars in the titular role and is as hilarious as he always is, but brings his comedic musical talents to the table as well.
13:28 The original songs are a feat of their own, and while this movie hasn't become a pop culture phenomenon like some of the others on our list, we'd say it's seriously underrated.
13:37 "We're both cocks, Paul. Both of us are cocks."
13:41 "Number 18, Wet Hot American Summer."
13:44 This movie was a total box office bomb, making under $300,000 despite a $1.8 million budget.
13:51 But that doesn't mean it isn't beloved.
13:53 [Crying]
13:56 Wet Hot American Summer received mixed to negative reviews and clearly didn't bring people out to theaters,
14:02 but with an all-star cast that included Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Banks, and Paul Rudd before they were household names, how could you go wrong?
14:10 "You have barbecue sauce all over your face."
14:13 "I know that. So?"
14:15 "It's pretty foul."
14:16 It too is a satire, taking a comedic look at summer camp culture, and despite its poor fiscal performance,
14:22 it was picked up by Netflix for a prequel series that spawned a sequel.
14:26 "Look at me, mom! I made it! I'm okay!"
14:31 "Ahh!"
14:32 "Number 17, This Is The End."
14:34 The concept of a bunch of A-list celebrities getting together during the apocalypse seems almost too good to be true.
14:40 But Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg used their celeb clout to pull it off with This Is The End.
14:45 "We need to stay here until they start rescuing people, okay?"
14:48 "A huge earthquake happens. Who do they rescue first? Actors."
14:51 "Famous people."
14:52 They called in all their famous friends, and managed to convince the likes of Emma Watson, Mindy Kaling, James Franco, and Rihanna
14:59 to play over-the-top fictionalized versions of themselves as they band together for the end of the world.
15:04 "Channing, introduce yourself."
15:06 "Hey, what's up, man? Y'all cool?"
15:08 There's a certain behind-the-scenes enjoyment viewers get from this movie,
15:11 because it begs the question of whether this is really what these guys are like in real life.
15:16 "It's Jonah! He's possessed! He's driving me!"
15:19 "Ohh!"
15:20 Number 16, Step Brothers.
15:23 The storyline of Step Brothers is just so delightfully weird that it works.
15:27 Two adult men, played flawlessly by Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly,
15:31 become step brothers when their parents get together, and act like children throughout the process.
15:36 "Don't ever, ever, ever touch my drum set. You understand?"
15:43 "Don't go in there and-"
15:44 "Don't touch it!"
15:45 "Alright!"
15:46 The plot is full of twists and turns, though,
15:48 because while at first it seems that the conflict will be between the two man-children,
15:52 they quickly realize how much better things will be if they decide to be friends.
15:55 "Hey, Derek, you know what's always good for shoulder pain?"
15:58 "What?"
15:59 "If you lick my butthole."
16:00 "Snap!"
16:01 The flick is full of iconic moments,
16:03 and gave us phrases that most of us have probably forgotten or even from the film.
16:07 That's right, this is the movie that prompts us to comment on how much extra space for activities a room may have.
16:14 "Hey, I never asked you."
16:15 "Yeah?"
16:16 "You like guacamole?"
16:17 "Yeah."
16:18 "Oh, God!"
16:21 #15. 21 Jump Street
16:24 Who would have thought that Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum were the buddy cop duo that we'd all been waiting for?
16:29 "What up, boy?"
16:30 "What's up?"
16:31 "What's up?"
16:32 "Who wants one?"
16:33 This unconventional pairing made for a great partnership in 21 Jump Street,
16:37 where two cops have to go undercover to bust a high school drug ring.
16:40 "Hey, you guys aren't narcs, are you?"
16:42 "Whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa, no!"
16:44 "Dude, come on."
16:45 "Baby, you're a narc."
16:46 This story has so much going for it,
16:48 tackling teenage stereotypes in a way that's really funny and also kind of heartfelt.
16:53 "Is this funny to you guys?"
16:54 "I hate you."
16:57 Sequels aren't always worth talking about,
17:00 but 2014's 22 Jump Street actually holds up pretty well to its predecessor.
17:05 #14. Bridesmaids
17:07 After 2011, people were forced to stop saying that female comedians aren't funny anymore.
17:13 "Are you an appliance?"
17:14 "No, I'm a man, and my name is Steve."
17:16 "You're a flight attendant."
17:17 "That's absolutely accurate."
17:19 Bridesmaids was unlike anything else that came before it,
17:22 a major studio comedy with an all-female primary cast
17:26 that employed as much over-the-top and gross-out humor as anything the boys were making.
17:30 "Jesus, Megan."
17:31 "I'm sorry, I want to apologize. I'm not even confident on which end that came out of."
17:35 The film was a massive financial success,
17:38 bringing in almost ten times its budget and box office revenue.
17:41 In fact, it's the biggest box office success that Judd Apatow has ever had.
17:46 It also reignited Melissa McCarthy's career as a comedic actress
17:49 and has become something of a modern classic.
17:52 "How many of those did you take?"
17:53 "I took nine. I took nine. Yeah, I, uh, I did, I think, slightly over-commit to the whole dog thing.
18:01 It turns out I'm probably more comfortable with six."
18:04 #13. Pineapple Express
18:06 Not all stoner comedies are worth writing about, but this one definitely is.
18:11 "This is the future. This is like the apex of the vortex of joint engineering."
18:18 Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg were behind Pineapple Express,
18:22 which pretty much made it a shoo-in for comedic success.
18:25 It's about a regular guy and his drug dealer who find themselves on the run from the law
18:29 and shows their situation quickly escalating out of control.
18:32 "How do you drive with one foot?"
18:34 "Oh, no!"
18:36 It's full of admittedly gratuitous violence that's used for comedic effect
18:40 and the sort of humor that makes you feel guilty for laughing.
18:43 But, hey, things don't always have to be highbrow to be good.
18:46 [Screaming]
18:48 "Why'd you do that?"
18:49 "Jesus, cut! Okay, just cut!"
18:51 #12. Mean Girls
18:53 Tina Fey's screenplay for Mean Girls proved that she was so much more than an SNL star,
18:57 as she adapted a teen self-help book into this biting and satirical yet oh-so-funny critique of high school girl culture.
19:04 "Shut up!"
19:06 "I didn't say anything."
19:07 There are so many iconic characters and moments in this film,
19:11 which has flawlessly stood the test of time despite being released more than a decade and a half ago.
19:15 "That is so fetch."
19:17 "Gretchen, stop trying to make fetch happen. It's not going to happen."
19:22 Saying it has a cult following seems like a major understatement,
19:25 because Mean Girls has simply become part of the cultural zeitgeist,
19:28 with phrases from the movie being part of our cultural lexicon.
19:31 You go, Glen Coco.
19:33 "Glen Coco? Far for you, Glen Coco. You go, Glen Coco."
19:38 #11. Tropic Thunder
19:40 Telling the story of a movie within a movie,
19:42 Tropic Thunder looks at a group of privileged actors who find themselves in dire circumstances while filming.
19:48 "And cut!"
19:50 "That's the trailer right there."
19:53 While the first of Tropic Thunder would be easily read as being straight-up ridiculous,
19:56 it was one of the rare comedies of this sort that received award season recognition.
20:00 Robert Downey Jr. even received an Oscar nod for his performance.
20:04 While there was controversy about the treatment of mental disability in the movie,
20:07 one of the writers stated that it was in fact the opposite, saying,
20:11 "Some people have taken this as making fun of handicapped people,
20:14 but we're really trying to make fun of the actors who use this material as fodder for acclaim."
20:19 "You are Seton Jack!"
20:23 "You saw Simple Jack?"
20:25 #10. Zoolander
20:27 The premise for Zoolander may be absurd, but that doesn't make us love it any less.
20:31 "Who am I? I don't know. I guess I have a lot of things to ponder."
20:38 Someone is trying to brainwash models to assassinate the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
20:42 But the plot doesn't really matter because this movie is all about Ben Stiller absolutely killing it
20:47 playing a vain and vapid male model.
20:50 He has to go up against Owen Wilson's Hansel, so hot right now,
20:53 who is his foe before becoming his friend.
20:55 "And I'm not your bra."
20:59 "Whatever, dude. Whatever."
21:02 Will Ferrell is perfection as fashion mogul Mugatu,
21:05 who plays an outlandish stereotype of the type of people who work in the industry.
21:09 Parts of this flick may make us feel guilty for laughing because they're so dumb,
21:13 but we can't help ourselves.
21:15 "What is this?"
21:19 "A center for ants!"
21:23 The Grand Budapest Hotel
21:26 While most of the comedies on this list are of the big blockbuster laugh-out-loud variety,
21:30 we're gonna take a detour for this entry.
21:32 "You're now going to be officially interviewed."
21:34 "Should I go light the candle first, sir?"
21:37 "What? No."
21:38 Wes Anderson has become known for his distinctive filmmaking style,
21:41 his pastel color palette, and his ever so symmetrical framing.
21:45 All of his movies have an element of humor to them,
21:47 and we were definitely tempted to include the Royal Tenenbaums,
21:50 but our favorite has to be 2014's The Grand Budapest Hotel.
21:54 "Very good. I'm gonna stop you there because the alarm has sounded,
21:57 but remember where we left off because I insist you finish later."
21:59 It has a simmering undercurrent of comedy running throughout the tale
22:02 that's both subtle and incredibly clever.
22:04 "I must say, I find that girl utterly delightful.
22:07 Flat as a board, enormous birthmark, the shape of Mexico over half her face,
22:11 sweating for hours on end in that sweltering kitchen
22:13 while Mendel, genius that he is, looms over her like a hulking gorilla.
22:17 Yet, without question, without fail, always and invariably, she's exceedingly lovely."
22:22 Number 8, Shaun of the Dead.
22:24 We would have loved to put every film in Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg's
22:27 Cornetto trilogy on our list, but while we love Hot Fuzz and The World's End,
22:31 we had to go with the earliest of the three, Shaun of the Dead.
22:34 "Oh my God. She's so drunk."
22:39 Pegg managed to take the zombie horror genre and make it into comedy
22:43 in a way that ushered in many attempts to replicate the formula he perfected.
22:47 "How's that for a slice of fried gold?"
22:49 "Yeah, boy!"
22:51 The movie is not only funny, but actually kind of touching
22:54 in a way we wouldn't expect from films in this genre.
22:56 Shaun of the Dead was put together by comedy auteur Edgar Wright,
22:59 who also penned and directed the stellar Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
23:03 "Didn't you know? Todd's vegan."
23:07 Number 7, Napoleon Dynamite.
23:12 We pity anyone who's too young to remember what a big deal
23:15 Napoleon Dynamite was back in 2004.
23:17 "Is Grandma there?"
23:18 "No, she's getting her hair done."
23:20 It's the sort of movie that suffers retroactively because so many
23:26 tried to imitate the awkward and dorky style it created,
23:29 almost making us forget how great the original really was.
23:32 It was made on a shoestring budget of less than a half a million dollars,
23:35 with the film's star only making $1,000 for his work
23:38 until he negotiated for a share of the profits following its massive success.
23:42 "Can I try it really quick?"
23:44 The fact that we saw so many Vote for Pedro shirts out in the world
23:51 for years following its release is an indicator of its cultural success.
23:55 "Vote for Pedro Sanchez, who do you think?"
23:58 Number 6, School of Rock.
24:00 Not everyone loves Jack Black, but we're pretty sure we can all agree
24:04 that this movie is a masterpiece.
24:06 "I feel sorry for you guys."
24:07 A comedy that makes us laugh this much, but that also manages to be
24:11 incredibly heartwarming is truly something special.
24:14 When Dewey Finn starts impersonating a substitute teacher at a fancy prep school,
24:17 he uses the only skills he has to teach the kids about rock and roll.
24:21 "I thought you didn't believe in grades."
24:23 "Of course I believe in grades. I was testing you, and you passed. Good work, Summer."
24:28 It's easy to forget that this film was directed by Richard Linklater,
24:31 who's better known for his more serious and artsy endeavors.
24:34 The songs in the movie are catchy as hell,
24:37 and the child actors do a much better job than you'd think.
24:40 "Rock got no reason, rock got no rhyme. You better get me to school, Rock-Time."
24:47 Not only that, but it makes even the biggest hater love Jack Black.
24:50 "Grazie."
24:51 Number 5, The Hangover.
24:53 The premise of The Hangover is such a simple one,
24:56 but the execution made this movie one of the biggest comedies of the 2000s.
25:00 "Oh my God. My lateral incisors, it's gone."
25:05 A group of guys goes to Vegas for a bachelor party, and things escalate into chaos.
25:09 But this flick is full of unexpected twists and turns that keep you guessing,
25:13 and that never take you where you think you're going.
25:16 "Freeze! Freeze! Shut that baby up! Shut that baby up!"
25:20 The cast is full of great comic actors like Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis,
25:23 along with Bradley Cooper, whose career skyrocketed after the film was released.
25:28 In case you don't already know this, feel free to skip the two sequels,
25:31 because they do not hold up to the original.
25:33 "You cannot be serious!"
25:36 Number 4, Superbad.
25:38 Superbad wasn't exactly going into uncharted territory.
25:41 "Wait, you changed your name to McLovin? McLovin?
25:48 What kind of a stupid name is that, Fogle? What are you trying to be, an Irish R&B singer?"
25:51 On paper, it seems like a run-of-the-mill high school comedy about two dorky teens
25:55 who want to lose their virginities before graduation and end up having a big night out.
25:59 But, the comedic duo that is Jonah Hill and Michael Cera elevated this movie into something iconic
26:05 that was not only a huge financial and critical success,
26:08 but also has helped it to become seen as one of the best teen movies of all time.
26:13 "Looks like you're standing funny, like you wouldn't be standing like that, like a duck."
26:16 "Yeah, but I'm doing like, I'm doing like college poses, like..."
26:20 "I don't know if you are."
26:21 The chemistry between the two leads gives the story a much sweeter undercurrent than other more cynical films.
26:26 And, we could watch it again and again.
26:29 "I love you."
26:31 "I'm not embarrassed."
26:32 "Love you."
26:33 "I love you."
26:34 Number 3, Borat.
26:36 "My name is Borat. I like you. I like sex."
26:40 Did anyone not see Borat when it hit theaters in 2006?
26:44 Back then, it seemed like everyone and their mother was testing out their Borat impression
26:48 by saying, "Very nice and great success."
26:51 Sacha Baron Cohen's idea behind this film was nothing short of genius.
26:55 Impersonate a journalist from Kazakhstan and go around the US interviewing unsuspecting citizens,
27:00 showing just how backwards things are in our own backyards.
27:03 Sure, there are aspects of this approach that haven't aged all that well,
27:06 but keeping in mind what Cohen's intention was,
27:08 you know his own views aren't the ones to be concerned about.
27:11 "Is this a cat in a hat?"
27:14 "No, it's a tortoise in a shell."
27:16 Number 2, The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
27:19 Though The Office began airing a few months before this movie was released,
27:22 it was really The 40-Year-Old Virgin that made Steve Carell a star.
27:25 "You know what? I respect women. I love women.
27:28 I respect them so much that I completely stay away from them."
27:31 He penned the screenplay for the film alongside Judd Apatow,
27:34 and it seems like it was flawlessly written for his personal brand of adorable awkwardness.
27:39 Though it's a story filled with silliness, there's also something going on below the surface,
27:43 which has come to characterize Apatow's movies,
27:45 whether he directed, wrote, or produced.
27:47 "Is your date drug? You're roofie."
27:50 "It's a Mentos. They're the Freshmaker."
27:54 In fact, it was Apatow's directorial debut, and remains one of his best comedies,
27:59 though more modern picks like Trainwreck also give it a run for its money.
28:02 "This is it for us."
28:04 "What about it?"
28:05 "Our journey's over."

28:20 Number 1. Anchorman - The Legend of Ron Burgundy
28:26 We've already seen a handful of great Will Ferrell comedies on this list,
28:29 but none can top Anchorman.
28:31 "You know I don't speak Spanish. In English, please."
28:34 "Hup! Hup!"
28:36 A piece about a group of misogynistic TV newscasters in the 1970s
28:40 that may not have seemed like fodder for comedy gold,
28:42 but you can't possibly explain the appeal of this movie on paper.
28:46 It's full of quotable lines that have become part of our everyday speech patterns,
28:49 whether we realize it or not.
28:51 "Well, I can't help it. It's fantastic!"
28:55 It's one of those films that somehow never gets old,
28:57 even though the jokes aren't exactly clever.
29:00 "I don't know how to put this, but I'm kind of a big deal."
29:06 There may be no rhyme or reason to it,
29:08 but there was no question that it had to be at the top of our list.
29:11 You stay classy, San Diego.
29:13 "I'm Ron Burgundy. You stay classy, San Diego."

29:22 I've got Jack Johnson and Tom O'Leary waiting for you, right here."
