00:00 Let me ask you, where are you in the process of picking a vice president?
00:04 Because you're getting close.
00:05 Well, yeah, but I think I'll announce who that person's going to be during the convention.
00:09 I think that's pretty normal.
00:11 During the convention, it'll be an interesting period of time.
00:14 Want to give me any names?
00:16 We are back with our panel, panel the lightning round, and it's veepstakes time.
00:21 Molly, what do you think the former president is looking for in a running mate?
00:25 You know, he, President Trump made a really good selection, actually, and Mike Pence,
00:29 when you think back to 2016, and he needed to shore up the vote of evangelical Christians.
00:34 And Mike Pence did a very good job with that.
00:36 And he also did a really great job with the debates and whatnot.
00:39 So I assume that President Trump is thinking about what he needs to win right now.
00:44 And he also is probably thinking about how, during his first administration, he sometimes
00:47 didn't always have the best people around him.
00:49 And he's looking to have really high-quality individuals who can help advance his agenda
00:54 in that second term.
00:55 Juan, how much do these picks ever really change the dynamic of a race?
00:59 Well, there have been some studies recently that show they don't.
01:03 You know, the famous one that everyone points to is Johnson-Kennedy, Boston-Austin connection.
01:07 But you know, in fact, if you look back historically, Kennedy would have won Texas anyway.
01:12 I think the news out of this process this week is the vetting, that some people announced
01:17 that they were getting letters and questions for vetting.
01:20 The big surprise to me was Ben Carson, the former secretary of housing and urban development.
01:25 I just didn't see that one coming.
01:27 And what I hear is that in the lead right now, you have two senators, Vance and Cotton.
01:33 And I think that speaks to the Trump family and Trump associates in the campaign thinking
01:38 that stamp of legitimacy, establishment Republicans would help him.
01:42 Francesca, this is a very Trump-esque thing to try to drop this in the middle of a convention.
01:47 I mean, he's creating about as much anticipation as you can with this thing.
01:51 Yeah, we're watching The Apprentice play out with these veepstakes right now, more or less.
01:57 And no one really knows, you know, who he'll end up picking up until the very end.
02:00 I've been warned that by sources repeatedly.
02:03 But in terms of what it can do in the short term, it certainly helps you create a space
02:08 for your message, win the news cycle, have people talking about your presidential campaign,
02:13 disrupt the news cycle if that's what you intend to do as well.
02:16 So if he does it before the convention, that could get that could get him some additional
02:21 news before the convention.
02:22 But they have the debate, too.
02:23 Like, that's the other thing you've got to keep in mind.
02:26 That's an opportunity for both campaigns to get back in the news as well.
02:28 Yeah.
02:29 Molly, take a look at the job numbers that we had for today.
02:31 More than 270,000 jobs created.
02:33 Unemployment did tick up a little bit, 4 percent.
02:36 But you've got solid job growth, and that's been the case for this administration.
02:41 Do you think that that has much of an effect or there will continue to be upside down numbers
02:45 on the economy for this White House?
02:47 The numbers need to improve dramatically for Joe Biden to get away from where he is right
02:50 now, which is really low favorability, a lot of frustration with an economy and a frustration
02:55 even that so many of the jobs are part time as opposed to full time.
02:59 And so there are many problems he needs to overcome.
03:01 All right, gang, given the time, I got to get to winners and losers.
03:03 Juan, who are your winners and losers for the week?
03:06 Well, my winner, a group of lawmakers, rich Democrats and Republicans who jumped into
03:11 history earlier today.
03:13 They took part in a bipartisan parachute jump in Normandy, France, to pay tribute to the
03:18 80th anniversary of D-Day.
03:20 It was organized by Representative Mike Walz of Florida and Representative Jason Crow of
03:24 Colorado.
03:25 The group included 10 congressmen, all veterans.
03:28 I think it was a spectacular effort to personally honor the United States and the allied troops
03:34 who took part in the historic assault that, you know, I think we all agree, changed the
03:38 course of World War II.
03:40 These congressmen, by the way, you know, Brett Baier always does that common ground segment.
03:44 I think these guys took it to a new height.
03:46 It'd be a great common ground.
03:47 Francesca?
03:48 Mine was also D-Day focused, the greatest generation, the veterans themselves who were
03:53 honored this week in Normandy.
03:56 And as we do get to the 80th celebration, it could be one of the last major celebrations
04:00 of this kind.
04:02 And for the loser this week, I picked Russia because they weren't invited to these celebrations.
04:08 France said that that was because of their war against Ukraine.
04:12 Molly?
04:13 My winner of the week is Pat Sajak.
04:15 After 8,000 episodes and so many seasons, he's actually retiring tonight.
04:19 This man is brilliant, witty, so kind, and chairman of the board of trustees at Hillsdale
04:24 College where I'm a journalism fellow.
04:26 My loser is Merrick Garland, who's the field marshal of the Democrats' war on rule of law.
04:31 He has overseen a destruction of the Department of Justice, and it will not go well for him
04:36 throughout history.
04:37 I forgot to do my loser very quickly.
04:39 Who's your loser real quick?
04:40 What do you got?
04:41 Posters, who were so wrong in India and Mexico, I just can't believe it.
04:45 In fact, one of the posters cried, cried as the results were coming out on television.
04:49 Wow.
04:50 That's something.
04:51 We should get that video.
04:52 All right, panel, always a pleasure.
04:53 Thanks so much, and have a wonderful weekend.
