00:13charges. In the most recent development, Halle Biden took the stand on June 6,
00:172024 and testified about her experience with Hunter's drug addiction.
00:20Shortly after the death of Halle's husband and Hunter's brother, Bo,
00:24the two had an affair in late 2015-early 2016 that ended Hunter's marriage to Kathleen Buell.
00:29Halle and Hunter continued to date, and in 2018, she said she began using crack
00:34cocaine that he provided. Hunter has shared details of his addiction in the past,
00:38yet more specifics about his relationship with drugs are coming out in his trial.
00:42On June 5, Hunter's ex-girlfriend Zoe Keston alleged that he used crack every 20 minutes or
00:47so when she first met him. Buell also testified about how she found his crack pipe and that he
00:52refused to go to rehab when confronted about his drug use. The next day, Halle revealed even more
00:57details about his addiction as well as the effect it had on their relationship. She also voiced
01:01remorse for her own drug use that Hunter initiated, telling the court,
01:05"...I'm embarrassed and I'm ashamed. I regret that time of my life."
01:08There's so much shame surrounding it that it becomes something that we don't talk about."
01:14According to Halle's testimony, she began using crack cocaine in June 2018,
01:18and she stopped just two months later. Hunter, on the other hand,
01:21continued abusing the drug before getting sober in June 2019. According to her own account,
01:27Halle wasn't aware that Hunter was abusing crack when they began dating,
01:30and she had no personal experience with the drug. Halle said the first time she found the
01:34substance in her home in Wilmington, Delaware, she had to Google it because she didn't know
01:38what it was. She added,
01:40"...he told me what it was. Crack cocaine."
01:42Halle recalled that Hunter was forthcoming about his drug use when she asked him about it.
01:46Eventually, she saw him use crack, joined him when he went to buy it,
01:49and ultimately began using it with him. When the pair was visiting the Roosevelt Hotel in Los
01:54Angeles, she tried the drug with him for the first time. Beyond the revelation about Halle's
01:58own drug use, she also revealed other details that showed the impact of Hunter's addiction
02:02on their relationship. According to NBC News, a text message Halle once sent to Hunter was
02:07shown in court. It read,
02:08"...I just want to help you get sober. Nothing I do or you do is working. I'm sorry,
02:12I am afraid you are going to die."
02:14Prosecutor Leo Wise asked Halle if she was afraid that he'd overdose, to which she replied,
02:19"...maybe. Or suicide. I didn't know."
02:21Hunter Biden has said he's had a lifelong struggle with drug and alcohol abuse,
02:25but in July 2023, he swore in federal court that he was four years sober.
02:30"...I have fallen and I have gotten up."
02:32In a February 2024 interview with Axios, Hunter opened up about how his dad,
02:37President Joe Biden, played an important role by raising the stakes of Hunter's sobriety.
02:41He then added,
02:42"...you have to believe that you're worth the work, or you'll never be able to get sober.
02:45But I often do think of the profound consequences of failure here."
