00:00The new face of Russia's opposition, Yulia Navalnaya, accepting the DW Freedom of Speech
00:07Award in Berlin, she reminded everyone of her late husband's legacy.
00:14Freedom of speech is not a weakness, but strength.
00:19Alexei proved this with his entire life and work in a country where it seemed there was
00:26no space left for public politics, showing how the truth makes even an all-powerful
00:35dictator tremble with fear.
00:39Her husband, Alexei Navalny, Vladimir Putin's outspoken adversary, died in February in an
00:45Arctic penal colony under unexplained circumstances.
00:50Earlier this week, a large crowd attended a memorial concert in Berlin on what would
00:54have been his 48th birthday, with his widow taking to the stage at the very end.
01:06A long-time behind-the-scenes supporter of her husband's anti-corruption efforts, Yulia
01:11Navalnaya was his closest political advisor, accompanying him to court and visiting him
01:17in prison regularly.
01:19It was following her very public campaign that in 2020, her ailing husband was allowed
01:24to be flown from Russia to Germany to be treated for what was later diagnosed as poisoning.
01:31When Alexei Navalny returned to Russia in 2021, he was immediately arrested.
01:36Yulia Navalnaya was detained and the couple were separated for good.
01:42Following his death, Navalnaya vowed to continue her husband's fight against Putin.
01:53The DW Freedom of Speech Award also honors the work of the Anti-Corruption Foundation
01:57established by Navalny.
01:59On the one hand, it fills us with hope that there are courageous people in Russia outside
02:07Putin's system.
02:09But this positive realization also serves as a warning.
02:12We must not condemn Russia per se, but Putin's politics.
02:20Because Putin is not Russia.
02:23And Russia is not Putin.
02:26Yulia Navalnaya and the Anti-Corruption Foundation are proof of that.
