00:00Get excited, Hunger Games fans! A new novel and a new film are coming!
00:05Author Suzanne Collins and her publisher Scholastic revealed early Thursday morning
00:09that the fifth book in the series, titled The Hunger Games Sunrise on the Reaping,
00:13will be released on March 18, 2025. Now, Lionsgate is unveiling plans for a film
00:18based on the novel. The screen adaptation has Francis Lawrence in talks to direct.
00:23He's directed four previous Hunger Games films, Catching Fire, Mockingjay Part 1,
00:28Mockingjay Part 2, and the most recent movie in the series, last year's The Ballad of Songbirds
00:33and Snakes, which grossed nearly $340 million at the box office. At the November 2023 premiere
00:39of that film, Lawrence said this when asked about Collins writing more Hunger Games books.
00:44I would love for her to write more. I don't know if she needs to write more. I mean,
00:47part of what's great about Suzanne is Suzanne, you know, gets inspired and comes up with like
00:53a thematic idea and then builds the stories around that. And so if she gets inspired,
00:58I'd be super excited to jump back in and do something with her again.
01:01The original four installments in the film franchise,
01:04starring Jennifer Lawrence, earned nearly $3 billion at the box office.
01:08As for Sunrise on the Reaping, the story will take place 24 years before the events of the
01:13first Hunger Games novel, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games,
01:18also known as the second quarter quell. Those games are noteworthy given that the
01:22victor was Hamish Abernathy, who was played by Woody Harrelson in the Hunger Games movies.
01:27There's no word yet on casting for the film,
01:29but Lionsgate is set a wide theatrical release on November 20, 2026.
