The BJP-led NDA emerged as the largest coalition in India's 2024 elections but fell short of a majority. The BJP itself won 240 seats, down 63 from 2019. Global media portrayed it as an "unexpected repudiation" that shattered Modi's "aura of invincibility", leaving him more dependent on allies and compromise for his third term.

00:00The Indian general elections are over and the results have come out as an unexpected
00:08yet a pretty okay-ish outcome for almost every political party in India.
00:14The Bharatiya Janata Party led NDA alliance emerged as the largest coalition in the Lok
00:20Sabha elections crossing the maturity threshold of 272 seats.
00:25But for the first time in 10 years, BJP itself fell short of the ambiguous target of securing
00:31370 seats independently and over 400 seats with its allies.
00:37According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP, which secured a third consecutive
00:43maturity term, it has just won 240 seats.
00:47This has placed them ahead of the Congress Party with 99 seats, but this marked a decrease
00:53of 63 seats for the BJP compared to the 2019 victory when they won 303 seats.
01:00In contrast, the Congress has gained 55 more seats than 2014 and 2019.
01:06The international media has closely watched the elections and has largely agreed that
01:11PM Modi's third term may face challenges as the NDA no longer enjoys an outright maturity,
01:17potentially making it difficult to pass certain bills.
01:21But PM Modi is set to commence his third term.
01:25The Washington Post described the result as an unexpected repudiation of Modi, noting
01:31tepid support that pierced the air of invincibility around him.
01:36Similarly, the New York Times highlighted the aura of invincibility being shattered
01:41citing BJP's loss in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, as part of a sweeping setback in the state.
01:48Pakistani media don reported the surprisingly narrow maturity under the headline, India
01:54vote shows Modi alliance winning surprisingly narrow maturity.
01:59The Financial Times declared India election strip Narendra Modi of his aura of invincibility,
02:04calling it a return of coalition politics.
02:08In addition, the BBC noted that it was a personal blow to Mr Modi who had always secured majorities
02:14marking a surprising revival for the opposition.
02:17Hong Kong's South China Morning Post also claimed that Modi has claimed maturity but
02:22BJP need coalition to stay in power.
02:26Similarly, Al Jazeera headline read Modi let BJP lose his maturity in a big setback, stating
02:32there will be challenges, bill will have to pass and a great amount of compromise will
02:37be made by Modi because he has a brute maturity he would not be compromising.
02:45So, while the BJP led coalition retained power, the decreased maturity is seen by global media
02:50as undermining Modi's dominant position and necessitating more negotiation with allies
02:55going forward.
02:56This election outcome has made BJP realised a reality that a lot and lots of groundwork
03:03still needs to be done again and so the boardroom meetings are set to commence soon.
