00:00Chris, Jose, we went over the rules in the dressing room, we know what we expect out of each other.
00:06The trunks are a little bit high right here, I'm going to let them work it right here.
00:09Let's touch them up and we can go to work.
00:11Instructions there by Gerard White, the man in charge in the ring for this welterweight fight.
00:20Also a four-rounder, as most young guys who are starting their career.
00:30And right off the bat, Yogi there with a good jab.
00:33Both fighters coming out strong, willing to exchange.
00:40Watch out there for a quick headbutt.
00:43And like you mentioned, these guys didn't come out here to speculate.
00:46Nope, no warm-up round.
00:48Absolutely not. Good uppercut there by Mejia.
00:52Yeah, Mejia just landed a quick short left hook on Yogi.
00:56It kind of looked like it stunned him a little bit.
01:02Nice uppercut.
01:03Another uppercut there by Mejia.
01:06Gonzalez is going to have to be careful.
01:09Yogi Gonzalez in red and green.
01:14Mejia in the black and red.
01:21Nice double jab.
01:24And like you mentioned, if Gonzalez was training seven days a week, how much does that actually...
01:30Oh! Good left hook there by Gonzalez.
01:35And it shook Mejia.
01:40I thought Mejia's legs were a little bit wobbly there for a minute.
01:44Yeah, both fighters are landing some big shots early on.
01:47I mean, you have to when you have a four-round fight, right?
01:50It's going to go by really quick.
01:52So there's no warm-up round in a four-rounder.
01:54And both of these fighters are coming out.
01:56Look, they're both undefeated fighters.
01:58A win against either one of them would be great on their record.
02:02So they're both coming out strong.
02:15Mejia's got right on the ropes.
02:17For Mejia being a taller fighter, he actually has really great inside work.
02:23Yeah, it's not easy for a taller guy to be, you know, that good,
02:28especially early on, you know, inside.
02:32Especially when it's such a real brawl there between these two.
02:42It seemed like Mejia recovered from that one left hook
02:45that left him a little bit wobbly early on in the round.
02:49Oh, another uppercut.
02:51That's about three that Mejia has landed,
02:54but thus far, nothing seems to face Yogi Gonzalez right now.
03:02These both fighters are throwing big shots.
03:05You got Mejia landing that uppercut multiple times this round,
03:09and then you got Yogi landing that left hook.
03:11Oh, he just got caught with another left hook.
03:13It seems like those are the two shots that these guys have really worked on,
03:19especially in this first round.
03:21The left hook by Gonzalez and the uppercut by Mejia.
03:23Another uppercut, but now by Gonzalez on the inside.
03:26And there's the bell.
03:28Wow, what an action-packed round.
03:30This is going to be a tough fight to score.
03:32Yeah, that's a tough round to score.
03:37And there's Mejia being talked to by Herbie Estrada.
03:43Let's take a look at exactly what happened.
03:46There's that one left hook.
03:48I don't know if that was the one or it was this one,
03:51but at one point, Mejia's legs seemed a little bit wobbly.
03:59Yeah, he got caught a few times with that left hook,
04:02but then, to give him credit,
04:04he threw that right uppercut multiple times too.
04:08And there's Herbie Estrada, his trainer and mentor.
04:16Working there on Gonzalez, who also took some shots.
04:20His favorite fighter is Juan Manuel Marquez.
04:25And the current favorite fighter, Tank Davis.
04:29So we got a technician and a guy that hits like a mule.
04:35Hits like a tank.
04:37Yep, exactly. That's why they call him Tank.
04:39And here we go.
04:41Round number two.
04:43Yogi Gonzalez comes out, throwing the jab.
04:47Throwing the jab.
04:53High guard for Mejia.
04:56And in comes Gonzalez.
04:58They've already butted heads once,
05:01and Gonzalez, when he comes in, comes in with his head.
05:03With his head down, yep.
05:04With his head down, and that may cause something between the two.
05:10Not wanting to let him out of the corner there, Gonzalez,
05:14but Mejia able to step out.
05:21Mejia determined to go forward, putting the pressure...
05:24Gonzalez, I mean, putting the pressure on Mejia.
05:28Yeah, Gonzalez is the one pressing forward, closing the distance,
05:31but Mejia has that good lateral movement,
05:33especially when his back is up against the ropes.
05:36He does that quick turn.
05:40I'd like to see Mejia be more on the outside,
05:43throw those longer punches, right?
05:46Oh, good uppercut by Mejia,
05:50but Gonzalez also answers with a good left hook of his own.
05:58Good head and waist movement by Gonzalez as well.
06:05The jab there by Mejia,
06:08letting Gonzalez know it's not going to be easy for him to come in.
06:11Nope.
06:14Mejia has had some good sparring with Sebastian Fundora.
06:19Oh, okay.
06:20You know, the fighter that's 6'5"...
06:23I believe he could be 6'7".
06:25He's probably 7'6".
06:27Yeah, he's a really tall fighter.
06:29There we go, the jab there.
06:32Would you like Mejia to throw the jab a little bit more?
06:35He's got the reach advantage, he's got a 3-inch reach advantage,
06:38and he's not using it.
06:40Yeah, absolutely.
06:41I would like to see him throw the straight punches more,
06:44but I feel he feels comfortable.
06:46I think he feels comfortable being on the inside
06:48because when Gonzalez closes the distance and puts the pressure,
06:52Mejia is there and counters with three or four punches.
06:55So I would like to see him throw the straight punches more,
06:58jabs and crosses to keep Gonzalez on the outside
07:00because Gonzalez' game plan is just come forward, forward, forward, forward.
07:03And if he takes that away from him,
07:06I think he'll have that advantage.
07:09I guess fighting, you know, sparring with Fundora,
07:12that's why Mejia likes fighting on the inside too.
07:15Yeah, you have to be on the inside against him.
07:17Yeah.
07:18But even Fundora likes to fight on the inside.
07:21That's why. He probably is emulating what he sees.
07:24Oh, good right hand there, short right hand.
07:28And good clinching by Gonzalez.
07:30Yeah.
07:31End of the second round.
07:32And this can go either way, both rounds.
07:35I don't know.
07:37Which one would you give the upper hand thus far?
07:41This is a very, you know, every ten seconds it's changing.
07:46You know, I'm looking at one fighter,
07:48and then the next fighter does something better,
07:50and then it goes back and forth, back and forth action.
07:53This is a tough matchup.
07:58Both fighters are showing a lot of great things.
08:01They both really like being on the inside.
08:03They both like to fight on the inside.
08:06Yeah, this is a very tough matchup.
08:08Great fight too.
08:10If the rest of the fights tonight are anything like this one,
08:14wow, talk about barn burners.
08:18This one has been incredible from the get-go.
08:24When the opening bell sounded, these guys said,
08:27you know what, we're going toe-to-toe.
08:31And here we go, round number three.
08:35Again, both guys trying to establish their jab early on in the round.
08:42Missing there with the right uppercut was Mejia.
08:47Oh, nice right uppercut.
08:49And every time that Gonzalez comes in,
08:51he's getting caught with that right uppercut.
08:54Once again.
08:56And that's because he's coming back.
08:59And that's because he's coming forward.
09:00He has good head movement,
09:01but he's coming forward with his head leaning forward too much,
09:05leaving himself open.
09:07Trying to go to the body, Gonzalez.
09:10Mejia turns him around right there in Gonzalez's corner.
09:14Oh!
09:24It's been like this from the first second of the fight.
09:29Yep.
09:32There's Mejia throwing those jabs.
09:36Oh, nice check hook landed.
09:39Oh, nice one too.
09:41Good straight right hand by Mejia.
09:45Gonzalez doing a lot of clinching.
09:50I don't know if that has any effect on what the judges are seeing.
09:54But seems like the guy that's going forward now is Jose Mejia.
09:58Yep.
10:01Yeah, even on the inside,
10:02even when they're grappling on the inside,
10:05I think Mejia has the advantage because he's the one who's throwing.
10:08Whereas Gonzalez is trying to look for a better position,
10:11Mejia's busy throwing.
10:13And that definitely will play a factor in the judges' eyes.
10:18Mejia says that his best attribute is his footwork and his right hand.
10:22We've seen both tonight.
10:24Yep.
10:25Against a very game,
10:29Christopher Yogi Gonzalez,
10:32who seems to be probably getting a little bit tired here in the third round.
10:36Yeah, that's what I'm seeing too.
10:37Yeah, it seems like he's slowing down a little bit.
10:39Oh, nice right hand by Mejia.
10:45Gonzalez is a family man.
10:48He's got two boys back home,
10:51a five-year-old and a one-year-old.
10:57I said,
10:59what does your wife think about this whole thing?
11:02And he paused there for a minute and said,
11:03are you married?
11:04And he looked around and his trainer said,
11:06yes, he is.
11:09And I'm like, well,
11:10you know, for all intended purposes,
11:12you are.
11:13If you don't say yes,
11:14when you get home tonight,
11:15you're going to have another fight in your hands.
11:19No, this fight is hard enough.
11:23Good third round.
11:25Oh, short.
11:26Both fighters landing big shots at the very end.
11:30And that round,
11:31it seemed to be a little bit clearer
11:35that I think Mejia is the one that took it.
11:38Yeah, I agree.
11:39I agree.
11:40I think Mejia had a better round,
11:41that third round,
11:42a little bit more clear.
11:43When they were on the inside,
11:44he was busy throwing punches.
11:45You see he's smiling right now in the corner.
11:49He's enjoying himself.
11:50Yeah, Gonzalez has to be a little bit more active on the inside.
11:53He's throwing,
11:54but I think he's busy trying to grab a hold
11:58and trying to grapple a little bit.
11:59Oh, nice.
12:00Left hook to the body,
12:01left hook to the head on the inside
12:03by Gonzalez there.
12:04Well, the thing is,
12:05we have the luxury of seeing,
12:08you know, these things on replay.
12:11The judges don't.
12:12That's true.
12:13So I don't know what's their mindset right now,
12:17but we've definitely seen two very close rounds
12:21in the first two rounds.
12:23The third one,
12:24I think it was a little bit more obvious
12:26that Mejia took control,
12:28so it might come down to this.
12:33And here we go,
12:34fourth and final round
12:36between Christopher Yogi Gonzalez
12:39and Jose Mejia.
12:43A little bit of a push,
12:44and there goes Mejia.
12:47Oh,
12:49good left hooks by Mejia,
12:51good pressure.
12:54Notice as soon as there's breaks in the action,
12:56Mejia's right away throwing punches.
12:59As soon as there's any distance,
13:00he's throwing punches,
13:01and that's where he's getting that advantage,
13:03taking advantage of Gonzalez there.
13:06Gonzalez is working to get out of there.
13:08He's working, trying to find ways.
13:11And also having someone on top of you
13:14the entire time tires you out.
13:17Oh, absolutely.
13:18Absolutely.
13:19We know what Tyson Fury
13:23did to defeat
13:30this destroyer there.
13:32Oh, good.
13:33Oh, that may have been a low blow there.
13:38Nice short left uppercut.
13:45Oh, another left hook by Mejia on the inside.
13:49Gonzalez is working hard to get out of the ropes,
13:52but Mejia's not letting him.
13:57And it's been like this all night long.
14:00On the inside,
14:03they fought at a distance probably
14:05like the first five seconds of each round,
14:07and after that...
14:08It's all inside.
14:09We may as well put these two in a phone booth.
14:14And for you millennials who don't know
14:16what a phone booth is,
14:17go look it up.
14:20Nice left hook to the body, yep.
14:23Good body work there by Gonzalez.
14:31Nice short uppercut.
14:38Again.
14:41Mejia's able to create some distance
14:44by pushing and punching.
14:46Oh, nice short uppercut by Gonzalez there.
14:48On the inside.
14:49But Mejia's there.
14:51He's there, still standing in front of him,
14:53waiting for his opportunity to throw
14:55when he throws right there.
14:57Now, I think Gonzalez is doing good
14:59when his back is against the ropes,
15:01but how are the judges scoring this?
15:03Exactly.
15:04Oh, good left hand there by Mejia.
15:08He's incessant there with the attack.
15:11He's not letting Gonzalez come out of the ropes.
15:14Nope.
15:16I'm sure that will probably play a role
15:19in the judges' decisions.
15:22Last 10 seconds.
15:24Oh.
15:26Punches and punches by both.
15:30There we go.
15:31Pull once and more.
15:33Wow, what a great fight.
15:35What a great fight.
15:38That was magnificent.
15:41Too bad someone's got to lose tonight.
15:43Someone's always got to go,
15:45and one of these guys is going to walk away
15:47very disappointed,
15:49and the other one,
15:51exhilarated about the outcome tonight.
15:54Let's take a look at that replay.
15:56There you see Mejia throwing punches on the inside,
16:00and then Gonzalez is coming back,
16:02throwing punches on his own.
16:03I think the majority of this round,
16:05Gonzalez had his back up against the ropes.
16:07He was landing.
16:08He was doing good work.
16:09But again, how are the judges scoring this fight?
16:12Do they like the fighter that's coming forward
16:14putting the pressure,
16:15or do they like the fighter that's using
16:17a lot of lateral movement and throwing punches
16:19but when his back is up against the ropes?
16:22Well, sometimes you just can't get him off of you,
16:25and that's the case tonight
16:27for Christopher Yogi Gonzalez,
16:29who was just, the last two rounds especially,
16:32he wasn't able to get Jose Mejia off of him.
16:35Yep.
16:37Ooh!
16:41I'm sure the judges took that into account.
16:47Let's find out who takes the victory.
16:50Let's go to Jimmy Lennon Jr.
16:59Ladies and gentlemen,
17:00after four rounds of action,
17:01we have a unanimous decision.
17:03Here are the score totals.
17:05Judge Bringside, Jerry Cantu,
17:07scores about 39 to 37.
17:11Judges Fernando Villarreal and Pam Hayashida
17:15both score about 40 to 26,
17:18excuse me, to 36.
17:20All three in favor of the winner,
17:23and he is still undefeated,
17:27Jose Mejia!
17:31Wow!
17:33With a unanimous decision.
17:34Unanimous decision over Christopher Gonzalez.
17:38I didn't expect the cards to be that wide.
17:4340 to 36 for two of the judges.
17:46The other one saw it, 39-37.
17:49So, in essence, every judge...
