D-Day 80th Anniversary and Armed Forces Day Festival 2024 plans

Leeds will be paying its own poignant tributes on Thursday 6th June as the country marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

00:00The D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy on the 6th of June 1944 were a turning point
00:07in the Second World War. On Thursday the 6th of June 2024, the bravery and sacrifice of
00:13troops will be remembered 80 years on, at anniversary events across the country.
00:19The focus of the commemorations in Leeds will be a wreath-laying service at the War Memorial
00:23in Victoria Gardens in the city centre. The service will begin at 1.30pm and will be led
00:29by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire and the High Sheriff of
00:34West Yorkshire. Civic buildings will be lit up red, white and blue on Thursday to mark
00:39the anniversary, and an illuminated D-Day motif will be displayed in Victoria Gardens
00:44throughout June. Meanwhile, the Armed Forces Festival is a month-long series of activities,
00:50shows, talks and exhibitions taking place across Leeds throughout the month, culminating
00:55in Armed Forces Day on Sunday 30th June.
