At 84-years-old, William Cashore is the oldest living champion of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States. He won the competition in 1954.

00:00I spent many, many hours learning these long lists of words, and most of the time when
00:17I learned the word, I would also learn what it meant, I would learn the definition.
00:23My high school classmates called me Speller, and I did used to help them with their spelling
00:30and their written work, but they called me Speller.
00:34Years later, I became one of the people who would proofread my colleagues' medical papers
00:42to make sure that the spelling and the grammar were correct.
00:45I think the competition is more professional. I think there are more kids who have coaches
00:51and tutors and all, and I think it helps a great deal, especially with modern English,
00:56if you know more than one language.
