Burning Down the House: Rethinking Family / Group Show at Kunstmuseum St. Gallen

From June 1 to September 8, 2024, Kunstmuseum St.Gallen hosts "Burning Down the House: Rethinking Family," an international exhibition examining the family as an institution. Featuring works by over 35 artists, including Louise Bourgeois and Mary Kelly, it critiques traditional family constructs and their influence on visual culture. Despite family life being a common theme in photography and portraiture, it has rarely been critically explored in contemporary art. Curated by Melanie Bühler, this exhibition addresses this gap by questioning the family’s role in capitalism, colonialism, and societal norms, contributing to current discourses on family and its potential abolition.
