Hunting for edible plants with London's urban foragers
Kenneth Greenway says he is inundated with requests for the foraging courses that he and his team run at the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park in east London. “We can't do enough foraging tours,” he says. "I guess the recent surge in interest is as a result of the recent pandemic, with a lot more people spending time in parks, thinking about plants, wondering what they can do with them.” Foragers touch, smell, pick and taste a number of plants on the three-hour tours. “I’ve just loved it, every minute of it” says George Page, a course attendee. "It empowers you but also it makes you feel you're really part of nature," says Rosa Nguyen, another attendee.

00:00 We do need to be mindful that it looks very similar to a deadly plant.
00:04 All right, so we need to be able to recognize the difference between the edible one and the deadly one.
00:08 So like your ribs,
00:10 wort, W-O-R-T, and then plantain, like the Caribbean banana.
00:15 And it gets its name ribwort.
00:18 But here in the UK, we call it honesty. It's another member of the cabbage family.
00:23 Alright, little hole in there.
00:25 Sometimes as you go to poke the stalk through it'll make one.
00:29 We need notches.
00:31 Put it here, put it on a salad, stick it on a drink.
00:33 We can't do enough foraging tours.
00:37 They're very, very popular.
00:39 And I guess the recent surge in interest is as a result of the recent pandemic.
00:43 With a lot more people spending time in parks,
00:45 thinking about plants,
00:47 wondering what they can do with them.
00:49 And it's created an interest in foraging.
00:51 Regular farming soil.
00:53 Yeah, she probably got off.
00:55 It empowers you,
00:57 but also makes you feel you're really part of nature.
01:01 And you can use nature, but wisely.
01:03 You know, I think this thing about the rules of foraging is really important.
01:09 So to be respectful.
01:11 To be respectful of the plants and what you pick.
01:15 In a way we should, before we pick them, thank them.
01:19 You know, and then pick them.
01:21 You can eat the flowers and the leaves.
01:23 But again, pick them from near the top.
01:25 You want the leaves to look nice?
01:27 I want a little.
01:29 [silence]
