00:00 And at this moment, Mexican citizens at both homes and abroad are still voting to elect
00:05 their first female president, which is a historic milestone for the country.
00:10 Our collaborator for TELESUR, Luis Gutierrez, with the details.
00:13 Good afternoon.
00:15 I am outside the Consulate General of Mexico in the city of Los Angeles, California, from
00:20 where very early on thousands of Mexican citizens that live in the city have gathered to participate
00:25 in these elections that will elect the next president of Mexico, as well as two migrant
00:29 members for the local congresses of Mexico City and Oaxaca.
00:34 We are almost three hours away from the closing time for the electronic polls installed in
00:38 this consulate.
00:39 One of the more than 20, where for the first time Mexicans residing abroad can vote in
00:44 person.
00:45 As we know, this is a historic election in which Mexico will most likely elect its first
00:48 female president.
00:49 And while here in the city of Los Angeles, the possibility of voting in person for the
00:54 first time is added to this historic event.
00:57 According to the INE, or National Electoral Institute, more than 200,000 people have registered
01:01 to vote from outside Mexico.
01:03 At this Mexican consulate in Los Angeles, 1,600 people have registered and 1,500 more
01:08 people will be able to vote without prior registration.
01:11 This is why the lines formed since last night and the reason why some voters arrive at three
01:16 in the morning or six in the morning to try to ensure they will be able to vote in this
01:21 consulate that opened its doors at seven in the morning Los Angeles time and that will
01:24 close its electronic polls at five in the afternoon.
01:28 We must remember that Los Angeles is one of the cities with the largest Mexican population
01:32 outside of Mexico.
01:33 A migrant population determined to participate in the political life of their country of
01:37 origin and who waits patiently in these long lines to be able to cast their vote in the
01:41 hope that the next president will work with the United States government to improve conditions
01:46 of the migrant community through immigration reform.
01:49 From here we will continue to report on the development of this historic vote from abroad.
01:55 I am Luis Gutierrez for TELESUR from Los Angeles, California.
