00:00The latest piece of street technology arrived in the centre of Belfast today.
00:1815 have been installed. BBC Newsline has been for a closer look.
00:22I'm Patrick Fisher, I'm the Chief Exec of Pulse Smart Hub.
00:26Pulse is a next generation telecoms equipment.
00:29Pulse are investing now into towns and city centres to future-proof them for smart cities,
00:34mobile telecoms and for the 5G rollout.
00:36There's a touchscreen and user interface so you can make free phone calls, there's free
00:40Wi-Fi, there's a public access defibrillator, there's air quality monitoring, you can access
00:45local services too.
00:46We're launching in Belfast our first 15 units. This is a culmination of two years worth of
00:51engagement and forming partnerships with local stakeholders.
00:55It's absolutely groundbreaking in almost every way. There's nothing like it anywhere in the
01:00world. There's no technology rivals, there's no design rivals. This is us, this is Pulse
01:04and this is the future.
01:06The city of Belfast is really excited with the launch of the Pulse Smart Hubs. It's great
01:10that Belfast is the first city to use this technology. We like to see ourselves as trailblazers.
01:16I think this is really crucial as part of our smart Belfast agenda. I think it will
01:21really be a place for people to connect, to get together, to get real-time information.
01:28I think it's a fabulous idea and certainly it's helping us in our role. We cannot get
01:33to all calls within an eight-minute target. It's helping us in providing the members of
01:39the public with the ability to help save a life. So they're doing CPR and hopefully retrieving
01:44a defibrillator and we know that that helps us strengthen the chain of survival.
01:50The Hub provides a communication network. They can quickly access police communications
01:54through the 999 system. During Christmas, there was criminals who came into the city
01:59and they were trying to spread counterfeit currency. We weren't sure how far the counterfeit
02:03currency had spread. With this technology, we'd be able to communicate that information
02:08quickly and effectively, almost immediately.
02:10All of the street furniture that's going into the ground needs to justify its position.
02:15It needs to be the smartest, it needs to be the best and Pulse Smart Hub does that. The
02:20Pulse Smart Hub gives back to the public. I think they'll help because visitors are
02:25always looking for things to see and do. We've got a feed in there that highlights the main
02:30events that are happening over the next couple of days. Anything that supports the work that
02:34we do will help them really get the most out of their visit.
02:38Pulse is very local, so it's tailored for Belfast. We're supporting four local charities.
02:43First and foremost, there's access to those charities directly through the Smart Hubs.
02:47Belfast is a changing city and ever adapting to meet the demands of all users of the city
02:52centre. The Smart Hubs will add value to Belfast city centre by making the city smarter, increasing
02:57connectivity and enhancing public services.
03:01We're really proud to be launching this in Belfast. Pulse is a real linchpin for lots
03:06of different stakeholders, all working together essentially for visitors and citizens alike.
03:11We've got a viable business model that can deliver serious social impact. The services
03:16and benefits that come with Pulse Smart Hub come at no cost to the user and no cost to
03:20the taxpayer. It can actually give real value to towns and cities in which it's based.
