Listen by Stonefree | The Story Behind the Hit | OG

Have you ever heard of the song Listen by the Stonefree band? Nope, not Listen by the Queen B. This song was way before that.

This hit single Listen by Stonefree got its popularity way before it was even officially recorded and aired. It was already well-known especially in the provinces because it was the theme song of a pioneer reality show on Channel 5.

Watch this video and find out more about it, as Miro Valera (Stonefree vocalist) shares the story behind their curious song, Listen.

Members: Regie Mangubat (bass); Relly Mangubat (drums); Benson Tanoja (guitar); Miro Valera (vocals).

Stonefree was a band formed in 1995 by the Mangubat brothers. To complete the band they were joined by Benson and Miro. And like most bands formed during their college days, the guys played regular gigs on local bars performing songs from their influences like Jars of Clay, Matchbox 20 and Incubus to name a few.

00:00 It's a heartbreak song.
00:03 The person is asking someone to listen to his girl problems.
00:08 It's not a Beyonce no song. We were the first.
00:25 It was also composed in a crush.
00:30 There's no recorded version yet.
00:35 We sing it from time to time.
00:42 The song would end with the chorus repeated.
00:46 And then in one live performance of ours,
00:49 I was continuously thinking of a line that I should change.
00:54 I suddenly blurted out, "Stay with me until she comes back."
00:58 So the song had a different perspective.
01:03 It's like she's talking to another person.
01:07 And what many people are saying, their interpretation is,
01:11 "Wow, there's a painful angle."
01:20 So it stuck out and that's what happened to the song.
01:24 We recorded "Listen" and we lent it for, I think, the Pioneer reality show.
01:29 Channel 5 at that time called "Single."
01:31 We were friends with the producer, with the director.
01:33 And then they asked us for songs.
01:36 They made it as the theme song of the show.
01:39 And it was watched in the province.
01:42 It gained heavy airplay.
01:44 And for an unknown band who wasn't signed at that time,
01:50 it was a huge help for us that the band was recognized.
01:54 I can say that it's the trademark sound of Stone Tea.
01:59 It was recognized by us in the industry.
02:01 It was the first song that was recognized by Stone Tea.
02:05 But we already had initial releases.
02:08 We had other songs.
02:09 We passed the Indoro program of NU107 that time.
02:14 When it was shown on a TV show, wow, it was a bit different.

02:26 We just wanted to release a single during the pandemic.
02:30 Just to have this message of hope.
02:33 Something that will inspire other people.
02:36 Like "Mag-iwala" (To Believe)
02:38 Better days are ahead.
02:39 Our priority now is how to survive this pandemic.
02:43 That's what I feel in each and every one of us.
02:47 We have a threat right now.
02:49 We're just in this pandemic.
02:51 Before we start the show, let's all be careful.
02:54 We too, let's be careful.
